## **Shirley Community Church Trustees Report For The Year Ended 5[th] April 2023**

The Trustees present their report and the financial statement for the year ended 5[th] April 2023. The trustees who served during this time and the current trustees are shown on page 3.

## **Structure, Governance And Management**

The Trustees delegate the day-to-day business matters of the Church to the Leadership Team. The Leadership Team consists of all Trustees plus Mr Stephen Williams and the Youth & Community Pastor Kijung Kim. Some of the practical matters are delegated to subgroups (e.g., Deacons).

The Trustees present their report along with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 5[th] April 2023. Statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting practices set out on page 5 and comply with the charity’s applicable law.

Shirley Community Church is constituted under a trust dated 12[th] December 2012 and is a registered charity, number 1153617. Its address for meeting and administration purposes is Shirley Community Church, Green Lane, Shirley, Solihull, West Midlands B90 1AA.

## **Objectives And Activities**

The objectives of the Church are for the public benefit to advance the Christian faith in Shirley, Solihull and in such other parts of the United Kingdom and the world as the Leadership Team may from time to time think fit.

## **Activities And Performance**

The reporting year began with all Church activities fully active again following the lifting of all Covid-19 restrictions. The Sunday morning meeting continued to see growth in numbers of people attending and included various ethnic groups. This included people from Iran, eastern Europe and some Hong Kong families who have relocated to the UK. The prayer meeting continues to meet every Tuesday evening in the Church building. During the week small groups meet in various homes as well as a group meeting every other Saturday in the Church building.

During the week the Coffee Morning continued to meet on a Monday morning. Numbers attending have remained stable. The Coffee Morning was noted by the local council as being a “warm space”, that is a public and open place for people to attend where it was warm. Little Lambs, the mothers and toddlers’ group, continued to meet every Wednesday morning during term time. The series of quarterly breakfasts for both men and women continued as well and were provided free of charge to the local community. In July 2022 there was a subsidised community day trip to Weston-Super-Mare. Three quarters of the group were not regular church attenders. The Youth Group meeting met monthly on a Friday evening.

The outside groups that used the church building all continued to meet. The Brownies group meet on a Monday evening during term time. The Art Group meet twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday during term time. The building frequently hosted a team from Good News for Everyone! (formerly GideonsUK). In July 2022 the Birmingham Chinese Evangelical Church (BCEC) started to use the Church for a Cantonese meeting every Sunday afternoon. There were some practical issues to overcome, most notably the transition from the Church’s Sunday morning meeting to the BCEC meeting but these were soon resolved. BCEC met every Sunday afternoon with the exception of a weekend in October when they celebrated their 30[th] anniversary. On Christmas Day 2022 they held their usual meeting and then organised a social event for their attendees until 9.00 pm in the evening.

4

In August a major capital project was undertaken and the Minor Hall in the Church had a new laminated floor laid.

In the autumn of 2022 the Church once again sponsored a Tier 2 (Minister of Religion) visa for Kijung Kim. Although the visa was granted in December 2022, there were concerns about the quantity of work available to justify the position of Youth & Community Pastor and so in January 2023 notification of possible redundancy was issued. This was still a possibility at the end of the reporting year. In February 2023 the cleaner resigned from their position. In March 2023 Gheorghe Ciorna resigned as Senior Minister of the Church. The reporting year ended with the Church having only one employee and being without a minister.

The generous giving of members means that the support of activities and projects has continued, and the Senior Minister’s and Youth & Community Pastor’s roles resourced. Overseas links were maintained with support going to Platform 67, Project Wingi in Tanzania and feeding centres in Moldova.

## **Financial review (to be completed)**

The accounts are prepared on a receipts and payments basis.

The Charity is principally funded by gifts and offerings from those attending the church. This income is either through receipts direct to the bank account, or in the weekly offering taken up during the Sunday Service. Additional income is received from the use of the church premises for meetings. There is also a residential property owned by the Church, which is let to a tenant, which generates further income.

The largest cost to the Charity is that of employment. There is one employee at the end of the reporting period, the Youth & Community Pastor.

The Charity has a policy of supporting other Christian charities and makes gifts in the support of this aim.

## **Statement of Trustees Responsibilities**

The trustees acknowledge their responsibility for preparing the Trustees' Annual report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Law) applicable to charities in England and Wales. This requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that year.

In preparing these financial statements the trustees are required to:

- Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently,

- Observe the methods and principals in the Charities SORP,

- Make Judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent,

- State whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and,

- Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to do so and presumes that the charity will continue in operation.

5

The trustees are ￿spOnSIble for keeping proper accounting records which disclose wilh
reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to
ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 1993 and the Charity
(Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008_ They are also responsible for safeguarding the
assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection
of fraud.
