TRUSTEES REVIEW & REPORT – 2021 to 2022

INPUT

During 2021 to 2022, Refreshment UK started to recover from the effects of the COVID pandemic that put many of the activities on hold. The year began with the charity coming out of lockdown which ended in April 2021 and the charity survived throughout the year to keep both the Refresh Centre and Refresh Deansgate open.

The charity maintained its board of trustees and council of reference, as well as holding regular prayer meetings. The charity kept financially afloat through various fundraising methods.

Refreshment UK kept it membership of the Evangelical Alliance, the Retreat Association and the Fundraising Regulator, and maintained its presence via the website, which was redesigned in 2021 to include many of the activities carried out by the charity.

HUB

The Refresh Centre

At the centre of the work of Refreshment UK is the Refresh Centre, a 14 bedroom missionary training centre based in South Shore, Blackpool. At the start of the year in April 2021, the centre was closed due to restrictions from the COVID pandemic in the UK. The centre was able to open again by May 2021 and began to welcome mission teams and individual guests, starting with an evangelism conference team in May 2021.

During the summer, the centre had to close again for a few weeks due to both leaders contracting COVID but from September, the centre welcomed small groups on an individual basis for retreats and training as they sought to find their own personal spiritual refreshment.

In December 2021, the boiler at the Refresh Centre needed to be replaced, and after a successful fundraising campaign, the centre was able to reopen at the end of February with a new heating system in place. At the end of the year, the aim was still to keep recovering from the effects of the pandemic and welcome people for individual retreats and mission training, with a view to beginning intensive mission training in 2023.

The Refresh Community

Due to the pandemic, the regular meetings of the Refresh Community had to stop and apart from a small number of events, this didn’t begin again. However, members of the community were encouraged to attend a local church – The Well Church, Blackpool – for a mission service in June 2021, and members of the community have found their home there in the meantime.

Training and Conferences

In May 2021, the centre welcomed K180 to stay, who were taking part in an evangelism conference at a local church – St John’s Blackpool. The Refresh Centre hosted them and assisted in the ministry with singing at outreach events. It is always a pleasure to work with K180, who share many of the missional values of Refreshment UK.

In June 2021, the centre hosted a trio of missionaries from Elim who were beginning a sponsored event in Blackpool and at the same time, hosted a mission team from YWAM. During their time, they organised local church services, prayer walks, support for homeless café’s, evangelism on the streets and hosted the team at the Refresh Centre. Again, it was a blessed and fruitful time for Refreshment UK and helped make an impact across Blackpool.

In the future, there are more plans to hold short-term mission teams and conferences at the Refresh Centre with churches and partner organisations.

OUTPUT

Refresh Deansgate

At Refresh Deansgate, the shop part had many stops and starts during the year, due to the pandemic and people contracting COVID. However, the shop remained open for most of the year and continued to provide support for a team of people with managed mental health conditions.

In December 2021, the front of the building was damaged by a storm and the sign came down. So, in January 2022, the shop was closed for a period of ten weeks and the team there completed a renovation of the shop. This included insulating the walls, replacing the ceiling with a custom-made wooden ceiling, refitting a brand new shop front and sign including lighting, building a disabled access ramp and painting the shop in ‘Refreshment’ colours. All of this work was carried out in house by the Refresh Renovate team and it was completed to a high standard.

The shop reopened in time for the end of the year and has been wonderfully managed by volunteer Julie Gilbert, who also looks after the team well.

The 247 Community

Over the year, Neil McCarthy has continued to post videos and content to help people receive Refreshing inspiration. He continues to manage this from the Isle of Wight and engages regularly with over 100 people via a Facebook group.

Refresh Outreach

Due to the pandemic, outreach has been more difficult, but Refreshment has managed to get involved in street ministry at various times throughout the year. In May and June, the charity were involved with the teams from K180 and YWAM.

In September 2021, the charity took a large team to the centre of Blackpool for singing outreach and did the same in December 2021 in partnership with the Well Church, Blackpool, providing carol singing and Bible readings.

Prayer

In June 2021, the charity restarted their monthly prayer meetings at the top of Blackpool Tower with the YWAM team, and continued to organise regular prayer meetings and walks.

In December 2021, the charity hosted a prayer event at the Refresh Centre for Blackpool, which was attended by a number of local Christians.

Renovate

Thanks to the success of the refurbishment team at Refresh Deansgate, the team took on other projects, which including repairs at the Refresh Centre. The team involves members of the team at Refresh Deansgate and completed drainage repairs, electrical work and handyman work at various locations. This enables members to continue to manage their mental health .

Overseas

During the year, the charity continued to provide monthly support for Faith India Ministries, our partner mission organisation based in Andhra Pradesh. The charity collects donations from supporters in the UK and also, processes donations from USA partners of Faith India, sending them across on a monthly basis.

Events and Worship

Over the year, we weren’t able to host any larger worship events. However, at the end of December 2021, members of the team were able to provide support at a candlelit carol service for the Gate church in Bispham, Blackpool.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

Refreshment UK were able to maintain their monthly expenses in 2021 and 2022. A previously planned grant for redevelopment at Refresh Deansgate did not happen.

Grants were received for the Refresh Centre from the COVID support programmes and a special fundraising campaign raised money for the replacement of the boiler at the Refresh Centre.

TEAM HEALTH

In May 2021, the director of Refreshment UK, Simon Cooper, was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease which for a period of time meant hospital treatment and limited the amount of work that could be carried out at the Refresh Centre.

However, since August 2021, this has been managed via lifestyle changes and Simon is able to continue his work, with time allowed to maintain this lifestyle and managed the condition.

In August 2021, both leaders at the centre contracted COVID and following protocols, the centre was closed as per guidelines. Both recovered and the centre was opened again within a few weeks.

An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
