## **PINK PLACE ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021**

2[nd] October 2021

## AIM and PURPOSE

The Pink Place is a registered charity that aims to assist the wellbeing of those who have experienced or are experiencing the effects of cancer.

The charity aims to offer a range of services to guests including hair services (cut, blow dry, advice), complementary therapies, beauty (nail and skin care), counselling, a wonderful wigs service which includes free fitting and styling, and a variety of social activities. The Pink Place initially provided services to women and then in 2016, the charity expanded to offer services to support men experiencing any type of cancer through The Blue Space.

## ACHIEVEMENTS and PERFORMANCE

Like many charities, The Pink Place has had a challenging year, set against very different circumstances. This report relates to the financial year beginning March 2020, when the global pandemic was announced and lockdown enforced. This meant the cessation of all faceto-face services.

Our fundraising activities were completely wiped out, the premises were closed, and support moved online. Trustees made the decision to minimise the impact of lockdown on guest support, and not to furlough staff but to support them in their heroic efforts to provide online services via Zoom. With very little notice of the necessary closure of the premises, the staff team have coped very well, adapting services to suit our very vulnerable guests and at one time were offering 9 differently themed Zoom sessions per week. This necessitated a massive change in working practises, working from home in a completely new way. Staff also educated the guests and some health professionals into the virtual world.

The team have sought in excess of 150 speakers from all over the world who have entertained and informed the guests. Counselling services have remained available by phone throughout this time and weekly mindfulness sessions moved to Zoom. Popular craft afternoon sessions have taken place throughout the year, offering a wide range of crafts for guests to experience. It is widely recognised that social interaction is an important aspect of the charity’s work, and we are continually looking for new ideas and services that support wellbeing.

The charity has continued to develop strong working relationships with the local hospitals to raise awareness of support offered, but this has been by email and virtual meetings. Staff meet with a broad range of specialist nurses which is mutually beneficial as the charity learns what is most needed and helpful for our guests, and the nurses are able to signpost their

patients to us and explain how we can help.

In May, the trustees took a difficult but unanimous decision to move out of the charity’s premises and look for a more suitable base.

Over the past year the charity has continued to build on its close relationship with Macmillan Cancer Support and further joint activities will be planned to raise funds and awareness of support available.

As lockdown eased and the warmer weather came, meetings have taken place in local parks in Basingstoke and Alton. Guests were visibly pleased to be able to meet up again, although some remain nervous.

An afternoon tea was held in a large open hotel restaurant and more recently face-to-face meetings have begun weekly in a hired hall. In addition, a weekly virtual session continues.

## FUNDRAISING

Our fundraising manager had built a good rapport with local businesses and organisations and made the most of opportunities and connections. However, fundraising opportunities have been wiped out by the COVID pandemic as people stayed in, premises were closed, and events cancelled.

Our events manager has had to work hard to gain considerable grants, notably National Lottery, Basingstoke and Dene and Postcode lottery. She has also been amazingly inventive, developing new ways to fundraise. Guests were encouraged to participate in a 2.6 challenge, and a Movember challenge was also taken up. Then, spurred on by our manager who challenged herself to Open water swims, this inspired our supporters to remain physically active with their own challenges. Guests have been encouraged to add their steps to several virtual walks clocking up 14 million steps to date!! When a local pub landlord’s lockdown online quiz developed into a Guinness World Records attempt, our supporters were galvanised to nominate The Pink Place as the charity to receive donations made throughout the attempt. This resulted in a considerable donation for us.

Our events manager gained the support of the insurance broker who ‘sky dived’ for us and his company match funded his sponsorship. All this kept the profile high and the charity also gained many donations from social media campaigns.

The Champion Group have chosen The Blue Space as their charity of the year going forward and have already held a successful golf day for us.

## FINANCIAL REVIEW

Our fundraising manager has worked hard applying for grants and running online fundraising activities in the absence of face-to-face events.

This year’s income was £115,091.00, including the closing balance of a historic Pink Place foundation account of £38,204.00, which has now been added to The Pink Place’s accounts.

The charity has had to adapt services quickly and respond to the needs of guests they support in ever more creative ways.

## STRUCTURE, MANAGEMENT AND GOVERNANCE

The charity is managed by a small team of volunteer trustees who have met bi-monthly this year as COVID changes have been announced. In addition, the team is in regular day to day contact via email and phone. The charity benefits from the Trustees’ diverse experience and skills across a range of professions and has been busy adapting and monitoring performance and services during the year. The Pink Place has in place appropriate insurances to protect operations and services and additional insurance would be considered if needed for special events.

The trustees had to postpone their regular planning workshop due to the COVID pandemic restrictions, but more were rescheduled. As lockdown eases the trustees are making plans for a new premises, looking forward to face-to-face services resuming safely.

The charity is supported by two employees, one part-time and one full-time. This ensures that the charity has a stable resource to ensure delivery of services whilst also providing the flexibility of support to meet peaks in activity. The team have strong relationships with the charity’s volunteers and work together to ensure smooth day-to-day management of operations and fundraising activities.

Work has been carried out to develop a new Pink Place website to enable us to better support guests and publicise our activities and events.

The year has been challenging but we have a strong team who have pulled together to provide the best services in these challenging times.
