enhanced by a wedding, a baptism 8nd the funeral of 8 churchwgrden. The St Moftin seNic8 numbors
have been stable across 2023 but wilh a modest growth Irend.
The Wgdnesday morning Bible 8ludy conlirsu8s online u85ng the Zoom plafform and Ss dlllgenlly led by
the Revd Kingsley Boullon, with a sm811 number of regular attendee¥. Two new service5 have begn
Introducgd Ihls yèar.. ¥ brlel Celllc 8erylce of Momlng Prayer al 9am gaeh Wedngsday and an "lona-
Inspired. servlce of evenlny prayer and fellowship on the firsl Wednesday of the month. The service
begins wllh a shared meal of soup and bread, and is followèd by 8 time of prayer, music and reflecllon.
It has been a joy 10 8e8 Ihls 88Nlce evolve under the joint leader3hip of a team from St Helen and Sl
Olave.
We ¢orrtinu8 to Sha￿ fellowship together as B community. Weekly coffe8 (and p8ck8d lunchesll have
been resumed in Ihe Upper Room after the mldweek Service at St M8rt1n. and we often welcome vi511ors
lo St Helgn's durtng rèfr88hments after our Saturday Communion; this is an ifflportant part of our
outroaGh.
Our choral scholars go from strgngth to Blrength, the team whlch began th8 y8ar 88w tsvo leavgrÈ and
two new members over the summer, and quickly bonded together to produce some impressive results.
The departure of our Dlrector of Muslc was covered by a dedicated leam of deputies from across the
city, who held the fort until the arrival of our new organ scholar in18to Sgplember.
We were deepty saddened this year by Ihe loss ol our Churchwarden Marga￿1 Hammersley, who dled
in June after a short illness. Margaret's commitment lo St Helen and Sl Martin was unparalleled, and
ihe18rge number of people who attended her fvneral refiecled the love and respect in which she was

Fewer concert8 were held al Sl Helen thls year, but it is anticlpaled that next year will see a retum to 8
fuller progfamme ol events. In eady October, we again look part in the "York Unlocked. weekend.
Thanks in larg6 part lo volunteers from York Unlocked. wè w8re 8galn able to open up Sl Mar￿n,5
inGluding the ￿UrtYard. Large numbers of vl8ltors were welcom8d, and we were able to share the 810ry
of St Martin's over the course of the bombing and r8bullding, as well Bs our involvement with the Cross
of Nalls community and ovr role as a place of prayer for peace and recondliatlon.
Our prl8s1 irb charge Liz look a threo-monlh perlod of oxlendad study between August and November,
her dulles were cover8d by our clergy team. thank8 largely lo the loyal support of our retlre(I collgagu85.
Liz returned Irom hor 8b8ence with renewed energy 8nd some fascin8tlng InsSghts into tho apologellcs
of church buildings. We look forward to leaming from her discov8rl8s in the coming months.
The partnershlp with Changing Llves and York in Recovery continues. In the summer wè look part In
seNice of remembrance In Rownlrees Pork. In prev*ou8 yeors B special Christma3 Carol Servlce
was held with moving leslimony given by prevlous membgrs of the varlou8 programmes. Olh8r
Christmas service8 81 Sl Helen were held 85 bolore wllh simll8r numbers to th089 of the previous year.
We are gralaful lo Anthony and Llsa for Ihglr efforts in fetching and decofaling our Christmas Tree.

During 2023 the churches were opened for vi$lloT¥ on mosl days. Sl Martin tended lo be available
Sund8y lo Fridoy whilyl Sl Helen has been open Wednesday lo Salurd8yS 88 a general rule. More
volunteers to open and lock the thurches would be a welcome enhancement to our legm.

Thè PCC repadoplad th8 Safeguarding Pollcy of York Ditice8e and has 8 named Parlsh Safoguardlng
Repre8ontallve. In 2023 there were no regulated activities for children and v￿nerable adults oTg8ni8ed
by the PCC. The PCC has complled with soction 5 SafeguardSng and Clergy D18upllng Measure 2016
(duty to have regard to the House of Bishops, guldance relating to the safeguardlng of ehlldren and
vuln8r8bS9 8dull$l.
Tha Churchwardons monitor the issue of advlce by the Chartty Commls$ton and report lo the PCC a8
necessary lo ensure Gompliance whh requlram8nts. In 2023 thgrg hav6 been no party ralated
transaction$ nor any matters that needed to be rewrted to th8 Commissh)n.
The PCC has 8 long-standing re5eTves pollcy whlch Is lo 8n8ure that there Is enough funding in place
for at least 12 months anlicipaled expenditure and thère18 a o)nlingenty for the organs. This policy
W8s reaffirmed and update(I by the PCC on 24 January 2024.
