## **2. Operations Report**

## **Overview**

Network Membership has continued to grow with 1,600+ Member organisations in 43 countries. The global pandemic has emphasied the value of digital resources which can reach and help leaders anywhere, without the need to travel which is both enviromentally need to travel and highly cost effective.

New resources have been researched and added to the Network website:

A **Covid Community Protection Resource** was developed and trialled in Malawi, Zambia and Uganda engaging the community in making soap and facemasks with W.H.O guidance on safety It was not found possible to access any funding support for replication

This new resource comprising 24 topics was developed as a series of Youtube Playlists, with the help of a multinational team of young people and has been added to the website. Additional topics identified for research and addition to this resource

A severely disadvantaged community in Northern Malawi was selected to plan for trial of a range of SDG linked Community Led Development projects, to be managed as far as possible by the community and with minimal external funding, to become a replicable model for other rural communities where there are few of no employment opportunities. This project could take two years and is in partnership with local Churches and in constructive liaison with the District Council. We have appointed a local Coordinator

Research indicates large numbers of young children, perhaps as many as 140 million, are missing basic education due to lack of accessible schools, unaffordable fees and the need for uniforms

A project has been initiated to explore and trial IT based primary and nursery learning based in a local Church or other conveninet building - as an integral part of the Community Transformation project

a Facebook page has now been restaged and improved to encourage new members and share developments, as reported in the four Members Newsletters Resources published during the year

## **3. Funding**

## **Community Development Members Funding**

The major problem which most Network members experience is access to funding help through grant or loan funding, to start or grow community based projects (A good example of the problem is the 2019 UN Impact Project Fund which received 1033 applications and was only able to adopt and help 41! It is reported that 2/3rds of all UK grant applications are rejected, wasting much time and effort!)

Proposals have been developed for trial of a potentially 'gamechanging' direct funding process, for direct funding of community approved projects, which has been introduced to UK Foreign Aid and to some grant making agencies, for consideration. No progress for such a significat innovation so far!

## **Network Funding**

Data bases of potential funders have been developed, but time and manpower has not been available for making more than a small number of grant applications, all unsuccesful The charity has generated no income in the year and has been dependent on personal donations by the Founder

## **4. Staffing**

We have appreciated the help and advice of our Trustees, but have so far, been unable to recruit more volunteers in the UK to provide an appropriate infrastructure. However a decision was taken to fund a full time Development Assistant (Thokozire Mtonga) in Malawi and part time a student Linda Malecaj at Istanbul University) to assist Youth resource and facebook development

We have received many encouraging messages from overseas Network Members indicating the potential for further development and growth of the Network.

While being Christian led the Network resources are mainatianed as seculr to ensure safe use in sensitive areas and to help people of any faith ot none

## **5. National Community Development Teams and Network Advisory Board**

**National Community Development Teams** have been established in Zambia and Pakistan

## **Network Advisory Board**

Bishop Elias Phiri in Zambia was a founding Board Member and a great supporter of the Network, but was sadly lost to covid, which has delayed further team development and is pending a strategic review
