Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 31 October 2023

African Adventures Foundation Trustees Report

This reporting period was the charity's first opportunity to operate with no restrictions following the pandemic. After two years of extraordinary disruption, the charity was able to return to regular operations and take advantage of some exciting opportunities available.

During the reporting period, the trustees continued with the charity's new strategy to focus on four key areas of support for its partner schools:

The charity continued with, and completed, its flagship Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) and Menstrual Health Management (MHM) programme, which is now benefitting 8,253 girls and 7,798 boys who attend its partner schools in Zanzibar. Through a combination of educational workshops and construction of better sanitation facilities, the programme will enable the students to reach their full potential by ensuring that all children feel safe and able to maintain personal hygiene, and that all girls will receive the support they need to manage menstruation. The charity then committed to delivering the same programme in Ghana, and baseline data was collected, and funding obtained, with this in mind for the coming year.

The charity continued to commit, during the reporting period, to funding its food security programme at its partner schools in Kenya indefinitely.

The charity continued to receive substantial support from African Adventures Ltd, which provides free office space, staff time and financial assistance to help minimise the administrative costs to the charity. This enables the charity to spend 100% of all donor income on the projects it delivers in Ghana, Kenya and Zanzibar.

Notes to the Financial Statements for the Year Ended 31 October 2023

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Basis of preparing the financial statements

The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

The activities are dependent on donation income and, as a consequence, the going concern basis for the charitable activities is dependent on donation income continuing.

The presentation currency of these financial statements is pounds sterling (£).

Income

All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Expenditure

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Donated services and facilities

Donated professional services and donated facilities are recognised as income when the charity has control over the item, any conditions associated with the donated item have been met, the receipt of economic benefit from the use by the charity of the item is probable and that economic benefit can be measured reliably. In accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102), the general volunteer time is not recognised.

On receipt, donated professional services and donated facilities are recognised on the basis of the value of the gift to the charity which is the amount the charity would have been willing to pay to obtain services or facilities of equivalent economic benefit on the open market; a corresponding amount is then recognised in expenditure in the period of receipt.

Taxation

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.

Fund accounting

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.

Irrecoverable vat

Where VAT cannot be recovered, it is charged against the cost heading to which the expenditure heading on which it arose.

This has therefore allowed a greater proportion of income to be used in pursuit of its Charitable aims and objectives. The trustees wish to express a debt of gratitude to African Adventures Ltd for its contribution and commitment.

3. TRUSTEES' REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS

There were no trustees' remuneration or other benefits for the year ended 31 October 2023 nor for the year ended 31 October 2022.
