Trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reportiro by Charrties: Ststement of Recommended Practice
appli(zble to chariknes preparing thar accounts in accordance with the finarrial Reporting Slandard applicable in the UK
and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective l January 2019).
OBJECrnIES AND ACTIVITIES
Aints and objectives
The object of the Foundation is to afford tharitsble benefit and relief to ts teneficiaries ty providing for or towards their
maintenance arbj education in XCOrdan￿ with the prinoples of thristsan religion and moralty and by assisting them in
training for and taking up employmenL
Provided that:
'FouTrJatiorErs' means the children and young people who are in need and are the Th3tural or adopted children or other
legal dependents of a per5cffl who has *rved or ts wvirHJ at sea in the Merchant Navy or ￿shir¥j Heet or the Royal
National Lifetxxt Institution (RNU) provided that priortty may be to Foundatiows vtho a￿ British or have at knst
one British parent.
A person "serving at sea in the Merthant Navf means any seafarer in any capaaty at*)ard a merchant
ve%el which i￿ludeS but is not limited to passenger liners, ferries, contsiner ships, tsnkers, bulk carriers, b￿ak bulk and
refrigerated cargo ships, Royal Fleet Auxilrdries (or theÈr eqwalent), coastws, specialist ships (e.g. RNU lifeb)ats, deep
sea rigs, safvage vessels, oil SUp￿rt vessels, lightFwJuse tenders etc.), luxury Pri￿￿te charteJ yachts.
A person "serving at sea in the ffshlng Fleet" means any se*rer worfong in any capaaty onb)ard inS￿re or
deepsea fishing vessels.
A person "serving at sea in the R￿al National Lifeboat Iitstitution" means any Lyew mwnbtr of a lifeb)at
operated by this Institution.,
Objectives, stratsgies and activities
The Foundation's propety assets comprise ttE unencumbered freetM)Id of ￿me 262 acres of the Grade II* Bearwood
Estate of which.
c. 202 acres Is leasoj untll 2121 to Bearwood Lakes &3￿ aub; and
c. 60 acres of woodland calkd knnk W¢)od is leased to Rethjam House (Berkshire) until 27th March 2031.
In addition, the Foundation retalns a FQrtfolio of quote£l investrnents.
Public benefit
The following actlvtttes are undertsken to fvrther public benefit:
Providing support and funding to existing Foundation¥s to enable th￿n to maximise and achieve their ￿￿tial.
IdentifyirKJ new Foundationers qualtfy for suppjrt and ￿)Uld benefrt from access to the Fou￿la1]0n,S
funding during their for￿￿tiVe years.
Developing marketing activities to iderty new Foundationers.
The Trustees confirni that they have complied with the requirerrents of section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due

Having agreed the widening of the benefKiary<lass criteria, on 5th July 2022 the tharity Commission gave its fornal
consert under s.226(2)(a) of the Chartses Act 2011 to amend ttE Foundation's objects to read:

The Foundation's Trustees as Members approval this change at their me&irrfJ on 10th October 2022.
The TrUSt￿S had three purp)se5 for this appliotion to the tharity Commission:
to enable the Foundation to make rtyayment grants to other charities; and
to enable the Foundation to make grants to charibes; and
to be able to deploy the Foundation's significant resour￿ more widety.
During the year, the Trustees SUPFx)rted 78 benefioaries {2024: 107). Although ov#all beneficiary numbers dLxreased,
the Foundation has provided greater support Fer captta, refknting the rising costs associated wlth education, training,
and family neeits.
The Foundation contin￿1 to offer monthly gr3rts to undergraduates at the updated rate5 of £620 pw month for those
living away from home and £415 per month for tho* living at trwjme during their sturfie5. These grants conttnue to be
paid monthty in arrears and remain coThJibonal on beneficiarie5 Se￿-certi￿ng thar ongoirfj attendan￿ and submitting
quarterly attendan￿ documentstion signed and stamped by their educational irtstitution.
Grants of up to £200 per annum were again provided to assist with xhcol uniform (])sts, alongside one-off payments of
£500 where appropriate to ￿p￿rt benefioarie%' e55ential needs. While no new grant types were introduced ths year,
the Trustees rK)ted a significant inuease in requests for 5UPPOrt with extracurriajlar activities, including swimmlng
le￿ns, darte dasses, and similar developments5 OFPCrtunibes that strengthen beneficiaries, wellbeing and confiden￿.
CoSlaboration with the Siilors, Children's Sjoety has continued to grow from strength to stslgth, enhancing the support
available to families facing hardship. In addition, ts Fourmlation ha5 establrshed doser working relaborships with the
Merchant Navy Welfare P*)ard (MNWB), SeafareTS UK and the Fishemien's Mission, enabling more coordinated
aSsistar￿, improved referral pathways, and a more holsbc approach to meetirrfj the needs of seafaring familie5.
The Trustees also cdebrate the achievements of beneficiaries who have ￿aduat￿j from universty and fijrther edLKation
this year. As in prewous year5, not all beneficiaries follow a tradit]onal arAdemic route, and the Foundation has
Continu￿ to SUPPOrt a diverse rdnge of pathways [￿l￿J1ng vcotional tr3iningi apprenticeships, maritime career
devdopmen¢ and crealive or entrepreneurial endeavours. These outcomes refi* the Foundation's commitment to
ensuring each young person can pursue the education or training suited to their aspirations and arcumstances.

Policy on reserves
Funds shown on the Foundation's balan￿ sheet totallej £21.583,006 (2024: £21,559,385) of which £3,101 (2024:
£25,349) is re5trKted, because the capital or income is r#)t available for the general purpose of the Foundation. The
Foundation's tsngible fixed assets are held for LLse by the Foundation. The ststal value of the fKed assets, induding
investments, is £21,872,051 (2024: £22,156,597) Working ca￿1 15 adequate in the short tem to meet needs and the
Fourkdation has neithpJ overdraft f￿lIttle$ rK*r ary th¥ge on assets.
The Bearwood Estate
In 1919, the Foundation was given the freehold of the 493a Bearwood Estste ty Sir Thomas Lane Devti Bt and Sir Erfc
Yarrow Bt. Btheen 2012 and 2015, the Trustee5 disp)sed of 231 ac￿ of this Estste while retsining the freehold of the
residual 262 aw.
ith the disposal of the 231 &res of the Estate, the FoLmdation continues to Ik3ve a high levd of reserves as a safety
net to cover the costs of eduoting ￿nefitiaries.
Investment pollLy and objectives
The Trustees, investment policy tskes account of the Trustees. deslre to maintsln and grow over time the real value of
the ca￿1 and income and to refiect their ambitiors to m￿Mise the edL￿tional supFort available to beneficiaries.
FLTfuRE PLANS
The Trustees contlnue to develop lon*tern plar6 for the Foundation's futwe, ensuring that RMNEF r￿nainS responsive
to the changing needs of seafarirrfj families. No fijrther wrtions of the eearwood Estste were sold during the year, and
the retsined estate remains under lea*. A rent rewew was ¥complish&J, and the Trust*5 wll continue to over*e this
area with careful stwdrdship.
Looknng ahead, the Trustees have identified Sev￿¢1 strdtegic priorities atmed at strengthenlng the Foundation's Impact
and sustsinability. These include d&penirKJ partrerthips with key martbme charities such as the Merchant No￿ Welfare
Board, Seafarers UK, the Fishermen's Mission, and the Sailors. thiklren's &oety, with a VEW to Improvrng coordination
and widening access to suppjrt.
The Foundation will alx) continue to expaTrd its tyJtreach to seafaring tdmilies, improving wsibilty and ensuring that
tho* who may benefit from assistano are better able to access IL Modernsing internal spcwns remains a priority, with
plannej devebpments in digitsl appiicatjon processes, dats Manage￿￿nty and grant administrdtion to ensure faster,
more efficient support for beneficiaries.
The Trusrtees intend to remew ￿ current grdnts Str￿tUre, incl￿ding evaluating the adewacy of existirrtJ r*s in light of
cost-of-living pre55ure& Ak)ngside academic pathways, the Foundation will further gJengthen its suptK)rt for vocational
and maritime routes such as UK4 apprenticeships, and professional trainiFKJ.
During the comirwJ year, the Trustees will undertske a series of 9)vernar￿, strategy, ard investrnent remews to ensure
the Foundation 15 well-postioned for the future. This ind￿leS work on developing a refreshed long-term vision for
RMNEF, explorirKJ additional opportunitie5 for collatoration, and Strengthening the Charty's financial sustainabilty. The
Trustees remain committed to evofviro the Foundation's a￿rOath to ￿p[￿rtir￿j children and young people, ensuring
that assistsnce remains relevan¢ effettive, and al￿Ded with the needs of m(Klem se*riw families.
THE ROYAL MERCHANT NAVY SCHOOL FOUNDATION (309047)
The Royal Merchant Nawy Schc4)l Foundation, a reg6tered charity (number 30904n is o)ntrolled solety by the
FourKdation's Trust*, continues to even though tt received no income incurred any expenditure in the year
under report.

and notes to the fironcial statements, including a summary of significart accounting poliaes. The financial reporting

and relevant regulations made or having effect thereunder.
Our objectiveq are to obtsin reasonable abwt Wheth￿ the finanaal ststements as a whole are free from
material misstatemenL whether due to fraud or error, and to ISSLE a Rewjrt of the ITh￿ep￿dent Auditors that indudes
our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assLranc< but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in
accordance with ISAS (UK) will always deteLt a material misstatement when tt exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud
or erTor and are considered material if, indivklualty or in the aggregat4 could reasonably be expetted to influence
the econ¢)mic decisons of u*rs taken on the bags of the* financial ststernents.

Basis of preparing the finanaal statements
The financial statements of the charty, which is a public beneft entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in
accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by a)arities: Ststement of
RecomMend￿j Ptactice applicable to Char￿eS preparing their accounts in accordan￿ with the ￿na￿lar
Reporting StaThJard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effettFve l January 2019),, Financial
Reporting Stsndard 102 Tre Financial Repcrting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland, aThJ the
Charities Act 2011. The financial ststements have b￿n wepar8J under the historical cost convention, wth the
exceptron of investM￿ts which are included at market as modified by the rewdluation of certain assets.
The finanaal statements are prepared in sterling, whtch is the fijnciional cuffew of the charity. Monetary
amounts in these finanoal ststements are roLmded to the wrest wund.
Income
All Ir￿Me is rExognlsed in the SL*ement of FinarKial A(knties ￿ce the charity has entitlement to the funds, rt is
probable that the income will be r￿8ved the amount can be ffleasur8J refiably.
Expenditure
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committiNJ the
charity to that expenditsJre, ft 15 probable that a transfer of eC0￿MiC benefits will be reqUI￿d in settlement and
the amount of the obligation can te measured r￿lab￿. ExFenditure is account& for on an accruals basis and has
been classified undpJ headirKJs that aggregate all cost related to the category, costs cannot be direttly
attributed to parkncular headings they have b*n allocated to attivities on a basis consstent the use of
resources.
Grants offered subJ&l to cor#llthons vthich have Thjt been met at the year end date are not&1 as a commitment

Fixed asset investments
Investrnents are a ft)rm of basic fina￿la1 instrument arxl ¥e initially rwi*J at their transaction value and
subsequently measured at thar fair value as at trE balance sheet date using the closing quoted market pri￿.
The statement of financial activibes includes the nct gains and losses arisng on revaluation and diswsals
througF#)ut the year.
Financial instruments
The Charity only has finarKial assets and finanaal liabifities of a kiThJ that quafify a5 basc financial Instruments.
Basic financial instruments are recognised at amortised cist using the effective int￿l method unless the effert
of discounting would be immatsrial, in Ca￿ ttrw a￿ ststed at cost. The Charity has no advantrd financial
instruments.
Taxation
The tharity is &xempt from tsx on its charÈtable attwities.
Operating leases
RentaL8 paid ur#Jer opth[r￿ tea￿ are chargejj to the profit loss account on a straight line basis over the
period of the lease.

arise when specified by the dornr or when fvnds are raised for particular restricted pur￿￿.

Pension costs arKI other P￿t.￿etirement beneffts
The charity coerates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to the chatity's pension
scheme are charged to the Ststement of Financial Acti%￿e5 in the period to which relate.
