The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

Summary

April 2022 to March 2023 marked another successful year for Mimbre as we returned strongly from the pandemic with two acclaimed touring productions alongside several exciting collaborative projects, a flourishing youth programme and continued professional development of our strong pool of freelance artists.

Our touring productions were met with incredibly positive responses reaching over 20,000 audiences from a wide range of backgrounds, and we were able to renew our international presence with performances across Europe and the USA. Locally, the community-focused Mimbre Youth Programme continues to grow, providing opportunities for young people to develop their creativity, confidence and teamwork skills through circus, acrobatics and dance. Artistically we kept growing through inspiring collaborations with a wide range of partners in the Creative Industries, including a strong digital strand.

Looking ahead, we are excited to continue building and exploring new opportunities to inspire and delight audiences across the country. We are committed to our mission of creating accessible, high-quality circus and acrobatic performances that celebrate diversity, challenge expectations and bring people together. Thank you to all our supporters and audiences for another fantastic year.

'I just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU for bringing Lifted to Now Northwich on Saturday. The show was absolutely stunning and the audience were mesmerised! The skill and presence of the performers was incredible and I loved how they were so strong and skilful and yet gentle, soft, caring and engaging. It was tender, poignant and fun too!' - Jane McLean, Creative Director Now Northwich

Highlights of the year include:

We would like to thank our funders and supporters through the course of April 2022 to March 2023: Arts Council England, Charles S French, the National Lottery Community Fund, the Edgar E Lawley Foundation and our generous donors. Mimbre also thanks The Foyle Foundation for funding towards production Look Mum, No Hands! received in April 2022 but now included in the updated comparatives within the financial statements for the year.

MIMBRE LIMITED

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2023

Over the year the organisation's income was £240,571 (2021/2022: £277,157) and total expenditure was £256,231 (2021/2022: £261,948). Mimbre spent some of its reserves on artistic projects, leaving it with £98,862 (2021/2022: £114,522), which is still well in excess of its operational reserve level of £35,000.

During 2022/2023, both Look Mum, No Hands! and Lifted toured successfully in summer 2023, and the success of these productions has been a tremendous boost for the company and its audience. The company is working on a new production, Weight and Lightness (working title) ready for touring in 2024; Mimbre is already hard at work on the production, with rehearsals and creative workshops underway.

About Mimbre

Mimbre are a female-led producing company, creating acrobatic theatre for outdoor and unusual settings, touring nationally and internationally, with a strong digital presence. We collaborate across the Creative Industries, as consultants and creators. We run a vibrant local youth programme and an Artist Development Programme for physical performers.

We use circus and movement innovatively as a physical language to illuminate human connections. We pull down barriers to reach beyond social, financial, and cultural boundaries and facilitate everyone's place within the arts. In all our work we challenge gender stereotypes and promote a positive, diverse, and inclusive image of cis and trans women as well as nonbinary people.

We make at least two productions each year, including at least one tour, typically reaching around 20,000 live audiences. In the last five years, our digital reach has been 3.5M.

Our youth programme, Mimbre Youth, is rooted in the communities of our local borough of Hackney. It includes classes, community days, performance projects and progress routes. It is a place where young people can express themselves creatively, gain confidence and work as a team. Mimbre Youth focuses on access, inclusion and excellence, and pulls down barriers to enable every child to thrive, regardless of means or abilities.

Our Artist Development Programme advances circus and leadership through professional development initiatives, artistic research and knowledge sharing. We focus on mid-career performers, women, non-binary artists and those from underrepresented backgrounds.

A collaborative approach permeates all aspects of our work, from our company structure to our relationship with our performers, audiences and participants. Working with a wide variety of artists, technical innovators and educators, across art forms and borders allows us to continuously enhance our artistic vocabulary and create bold, challenging and highly skilled work.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES Activities and Achievements Productions and touring

Look Mum, No Hands!:

Look Mum, No Hands! is a tender tale of friendship and growing up. It explores a coming-of-age story about two friends testing their own boundaries. Together they explore freedom, taking risks and independence. They see how those things change, depending on who you are.

Look Mum, No Hands! is a co-prodcution with Disabled-led theatre company Daryl & Co. Drawn from ideas first explored in 2019, in 2022 the production was commissioned by FESTIVAL.ORG and Hat Fair via the Without Walls consortium and toured to libraries, outdoor festivals, and early in 2023, schools. The production was also funded by The Golsoncott Foundation and the Leche Trust in the previous year.

Mimbre learned a lot about making our work more accessible through this co-production. Thanks to the solid support from our funders, we were able to make sure access was included across the production and tour. We were able to employ two extra performers as understudies/roleshares, and create a retainer system for them to be on standby to step in if the main performers were unwell, exhausted or injured. We created an Easy Read introduction and synopsis for our audiences to look at before they attended, to get to know the show, the characters and the story. There is also an audio introduction - and synopsis for our audiences to listen to before they arrive. They can both be found here: https://mimbre.co.uk/look mum-no-hands-easy-read-and-audio-description/

Since working on this with Daryl & Co we will be providing similar resources for all our productions going forward. We also toured with a variety of seating options for audiences with the aim of making the experience of watching the show completely inclusive - without making Disabled audience members sit in a special cordoned off section.

"Where they worked together while being different - it made me cry - very moving [...] "It was such a beautiful, simple work, and Danielle and Laura's care to make a welcoming space, especially for the little kids, was really inspiring. Hopefully see you again over the summer" Dom Kippin at Salisbury International Arts Festival

"I had a great pleasure of seeing 'Look Mum No Hands' (twice) at the Birmingham International Dance Festival on Sunday and I was lucky enough to meet both Laura and Danielle after!

"Firstly, I just wanted to say how blown away I was by them, and by the amazing piece you have devised with them!"

"I run a longstanding charity (founded long before I was born) that that facilities diversity and inclusion amongst children from Birmingham [where we] see young disabled and non-disabled children come together, meet each other for the first time and suss each other out every year. And your production practically encapsulates that journey. [...] Your production exemplifies this so beautifully, hilariously and poignantly, not to mention showing what can be achieved physically together with some trial and error! In short we loved it." Andrew Miles, Birmingham Director of PHAB

Lifted:

Mimbre's outdoor production Lifted is a collection of funny, poetic and surprising moments, which explore in different ways what it means when one body is carried by another. Or when one person carries two people. Or when a person doesn't want to be carried. Or when three people find the perfect balance.

In 2022 it toured for the fourth year with performers Jaide Annalise, Freya Stokka and Mimbre Joint Artistic Director Silvia Fratelli.

"The touch and tenderness in Lifted by Mimbre was beautiful. A perfect show to celebrate connection after the last two years" Ivan Wadeson at Now Northwich, 2022

"the best show I've seen in the past few years" - audience member at ParkPerPlex festival

Lifted toured outdoor festivals during the summer of 2022 and in the autumn went on tour to the USA, visiting The Momentary, Bentonville, Arkansas; Discovery Green, Houston, Texas and The Ringling, Sarasota, Florida.

"The performance was incredible. The strength of these three women was mind-boggling. The theme of "Lift", women supporting other women and standing on the shoulders of other women to literally reach the top, still gives me goose bumps. It was remarkable to experience it. Thank you and your staff for bringing them here." - audience member

Commissions, consultancy and collaborations

In June, Joint Artistic Director, Lina Johansson, was the circus choreographer on the opera Rusalka at Garsington Opera. The production gathered some excellent reviews such as this from George Hall at The Stage: "His [dir. Jack Furness] approach focuses on the essentials of narrative, character and situation. With the assistance of circus choreographer Lina Johansson and her team of aerialists and acrobats, plus Fleur Darkin's choreography and some extraordinary work from the three mellifluous wood-nymphs - Marlena Devoe, Heather Lowe and Stephanie Wake-Edwards - the audience is transported to a supernatural realm." The production then went on to be part of the Edinburgh International Festival.

In summer 2022, Lina and core performers, Jaide Annalise and Freya Stokka, took part in some filming for an experimental digital short film Flite with Framestore which included the latest technologies within motion capture, CGI, 360 screen and animation.

In the autumn of 2022 the quirky short film, Eye Ear You, that Mimbre made with designer Shona Heath was published and promoted with posters around Hackney and further afield. The film can be watched here: https://shonaheath.com/eyeearyou/

In the autumn, Mimbre's acrobats also worked with digital artists SDNA to create bespoke content for Hackney Town Hall. Both projects were publicly presented as part of Hackney Revealed and projected onto buildings in Hackney central throughout the festival.

In December 2022, Lina, Silvia and acrobat Arielle Lauzon worked with the brilliant young performers of the Circus Project in Hove to create a curtain raiser (a short pre-show show) for FIQ! by Groupe Acrobatique de Tanger at Brighton Dome.

Mimbre Youth Programme

Mimbre Youth was founded in 2008 and is rooted in the communities of Mimbre's local borough of Hackney. It includes acrobatics and streetdance classes, community days, performance projects and progression routes. It is a place where young people can express themselves creatively, gain confidence and work as a team. Mimbre Youth focuses on access, inclusion and excellence, and pulls down barriers to enable every child to thrive and find their own creative expressions, regardless of means or abilities.

"My daughter has no other access to a local and affordable activity which promotes her physical development as well as supporting her in terms of mental health, confidence, friendship forming, etc. The breadth of access to so many forms of performance allows children to find at least one element where they can thrive or get a spark of excitement at possibly excelling when they fall in love with a new skill/discipline."

In 2022 - 2023 we ran weekly classes for three age groups, 5-7, 7-9 and 10-16, during the summer 2022, autumn 2022 and spring 2023 terms. We reached nearly 1,000 attendances from more than 60 local young people, half of whom were from low-income backgrounds. Mimbre Youth is also reflective of Hackney's rich diversity, with 50% of its participants from the global majority.

We were very happy to return to Milton Gardens Community Hall which we had been unable to use during and directly following the Covid-19 pandemic; we have been building up a community on the Milton Garden estate for more than 10 years so it was wonderful to be back there.

In the summer of 2022, we took some Mimbre Youth to see Circus Abyssinia at the Underbelly in Earls Court. This was particularly exciting because Bibi and Bichu who run Circus Abyssinia have taught on the youth programme and previously performed at a Mimbre fun day. Following the visit, five of Circus Abyssinia's artists also came and taught one of the Mimbre youth classes.

It was also significant to be able to take our young people, who come from a rich variety of backgrounds, to see a company led by artist from the global majority.

In November 2022, four of Mimbre's young people attended a week of Black History Month inspired events run by the National Centre of Circus Arts.

In January 2023, 67 young people, parents and carers attended the dress rehearsal of Cirque du Soleil's show, Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities, at the Royal Albert Hall.

"Last night was a fantastic opportunity for me and A, never would we be able to go and see such a show. I don't have words to thank and show my real gratitude for your attention." Parent 2023

At the end of the spring term, we asked the youth programme families some questions about their motivations for being part of the classes and the answers were interesting - 'fun' was top for both groups. We think that before the Covid-19 pandemic fewer parents would have cited this as being important to them, but young people really need something fun right now.

"There is no other class that delivers what Mimbre does that are affordable for all."

Mimbre Youth Programme was funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, the Charles S French Charitable Trust, the Edgar E Lawley Foundation and many kind donations, especially £1,689 raised through a crowdfunding campaign.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES Artist and Sector Development Artist support

In January 2023 we ran another 'Acrolab' week at 101 Outdoor Arts in Newbury following our successful residencies there in 2020 and 2021. The Acrolab was a week-long residency with women and non-binary acrobatic performers, with the aim of developing the practice of acrobalance and group acrobatics in terms of access, inclusion and excellence. This time we split up the week so the beginning focused on access, inclusion and creative approaches to teaching and devising with acrobatics skills, and the end of the week was focused on high-level techniques and stretching skill levels. We ran an open call with 101 to support people from groups under-represented in circus and the arts to attend the residency. Initially we had earmarked three places for this, but in response to a high demand (16 people applied) we extended this to six places. All in all 39 performers attended the Acrolab! We created some resources for the week including a Code of Conduct and an outline of our Inclusive and Supportive Approach in the Training Space which were warmly received by our participants and we then shared with the rest of the sector on our website. https://mimbre.co.uk/our-approach-to-resources-from-ouracrolab-2023/

Videos about the week can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ-mrebrDkM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFqpr1MWXcg

We also ran a week of classes for professional performers at north-east London venue Tripspace and organised a pain management workshop with physiotherapist Bethany Shum.

Sector support

The Mimbre team continued to take part in a wide number of meetings and initiatives throughout the sectors we work in.

Organisational

During the course of 2022 Mimbre applied for and was accepted into Arts Council England's National Portfolio. Being an NPO secures core funding for Mimbre through to March 2026.

Lina used the Mimbre van to help RUDE Everyday Sunshine Cafe and a group of volunteers to collect 1213 kg of food for The Hackney Foodbank at Christmas 2022.

In early 2023 Mimbre applied for and was granted a visa sponsorship licence for the temporary Creative Worker route. This means the organisation can continue to employ non-UK performers following Brexit.

People

Mimbre is proud to be a fair pay employer, pays its performers rates in line with those of the Independent Theatre Council / Equity agreement and is a member of the Living Wage Foundation. Mimbre is female-led and offers flexible working arrangements to retain talent. It considers developing strong female leaders to be part of its mission.

From April 2022 to March 2023, the Mimbre staff team was made up of Silvia Fratelli, Lina Johansson, Lissy Lovett, Zsófi Szendrei and Anna Strickland, but in autumn 2023 both Zsófi and Anna left the company. New Communication and Administration Officer Brilla Sesay joined in September 2023. Freelance bookkeeper Sharon Mitcheson also stepped down during the year. Circus Artist Emma Saunders joined the Mimbre Youth team for a few terms as youth programme assistant. Previous Kickstart Trainee Tyaine Wright-Shirley has remained on the payroll as she assists on the youth programme from time to time.

Mimbre takes the welfare of its performers very seriously and as well as the activities mentioned above under artist and sector support, physiotherapy treatment is arranged before any long rehearsal period or tour for all performers. Core performers are paid for group training sessions. Key freelancers are also paid to attend training sessions and any meetings.

FINANCIAL REVIEW Financial position

In 2022/23 Mimbre's income was £240,571 (2021/2022: £277,157) and expenditure £256,231 (2021/2022: £261,948) giving rise to a planned deficit of £15,660.

We note that Mimbre's updated comparatives in the financial statements have been restated. That is because funding from The Foyle Foundation, received in April 2023, should have been included in the accounts for 2021/2022 but was not. This has now been rectified.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2023

1. STATUTORY INFORMATION

Mimbre Limited is a limited-by-guarantee company incorporated in England and Wales. In the event of the charity being wound up, the liability in respect of the guarantee is limited to £1 per member of the charity. The address of the registered office is given in the Trustees' Report of these financial statements.

The financial statements are presented in sterling (£).

2. ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Basis of preparing the financial statements

The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

Income

All incoming resources are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when the charity is legally entitled to the income after any performance conditions have been met, the amount can be measured reliably and it is probable that the income will be received.

For donations to be recognised the charity will have been notified of the amounts and the settlement date in writing. If there are conditions attached to the donation and this requires a level of performance before entitlement can be obtained then the income is deferred until those conditions are fully met or the fulfilment of those conditions is within the control of the charity and it is probable they will be fulfilled.

No amount is included in the financial statements for volunteer time.

Monies received for performances at venues are recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities at the date of the show. Monies received from furthering the art of drama through providing workshops are recognised on the date that the service is provided.

Income from government and other grants are recognised at fair value when the charity has entitlement after any performance related conditions have been met, it is probable that the income will be received.

Expenditure

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Taxation

The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.

Fund accounting

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.

Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits

The charitable company operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to the charitable company's pension scheme are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period to which they relate.
