applications and aims to support top quality national and local research with an aim to improve treatment options and care for patients with this disease.

A previous grant application for the funding of 1 year of a 3 year PhD post (mesothelioma research) was paid = £45 353.15.

Another previous grant application for the funding of a long survivors of mesothelioma project (BAP1s and histology review is still ongoing – up to £10 000 awarded.

The following funding applications were reviewed by the Trustees and approved;

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

- validating a scoring system to predict time to disease progression in epithelioid mesothelioma = £7 290

- support clinical fellow funding for Dr Alex Dipper – PhD in Malignant Pleural effusion management = £19 000

By agreeing to the above expenditure, the Trustees have kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit. They have also considered maintaining a reserve of at least £50 000 in the AMF account.

The funding of the PhD student, the project in long survivors of mesothelioma and validating a scoring system will provide patients with an opportunity to participate in quality research projects which will aim to improve treatments and quality of life for patients with mesothelioma in the future.

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

The main achievement for AMF over this time period was the funding of a research registrar, Dr Geraldine Lynch, who commenced her PhD in mesothelioma research in August 2022 and continues to deliver high quality research in mesothelioma.

It has also helped to fund a PhD student to work on a project on the management Malignant Pleural Effusions (MPE) which will benefit the quality of life for mesothelioma patients.

It has also funded 2 important ongoing projects in mesothelioma, both aim to benefit patients with mesothelioma in the future. It is hoped the results of these research studies will be presented at conference and shared with the local mesothelioma support group (Bristol and Beyond Asbestos Family Support, BBAFS) as well written up for publication in a medical journal.
