Statement by the Directors Cheryl Auguiste, Shareen Gray, Kevin Joseph and Edivaldo Reis
This year at Steel Pan Trust has been a symphony of growth, community engagement and musical excellence. A major highlight was the showcase of our all-inclusive steel pan workshops in Northolt, which gained national attention on BBC The One Show in December 2022. The feature, including presenter Lettija Lee's delightful mastery of “Jingle Bells” on the steel pan, vividly captured the essence of our mission. Her participation in our Christmas Steelband in Southampton further amplified the festive spirit we aim to spread through our music. (Watch the video: (https://youtu.be/_q5c4tOya9g?si=VYiBZcIOvaZWpkn2).
Our fundraising street performance tour during Christmas and spring was a resounding success, raising £3,214, thanks to generous public support. The tour spanned Feltham, Southampton, Canterbury and Hammersmith, reflecting our expanding reach.
In August, we collaborated with Stardust Steelband in Acton, providing our volunteers with the invaluable experience of performing at the Notting Hill Carnival.
School-O-Rama, despite the rain, saw an enthusiastic participation from nine London schools. With UKON Careers' grant of £2,700, we not only awarded prizes but also facilitated performances at the Barking Carnival. Highlights of this vibrant festival can be seen here: (https://youtu.be/qgZXwKwnQjw?si=bmhGilbs-N_PDF38).
The Freshwater Foundation’s grant enabled us to run our all-inclusive workshops at Rectory Park Community Centre for a full year, in partnership with the Community First Foundation. This initiative, dubbed ‘Pan Therapy’, significantly impacted community well-being and led us to secure the Mayor’s for London Rocket Science grant, expanding our reach across London boroughs like Barking, Merton and Ealing.
Our five-year plan focuses on increasing steelband performances and workshops for greater financial resilience, a goal we are on track to achieve with a 50% increase this year. Our volunteers have been instrumental in delivering engaging workshops and performances at events such as the Greenhouse Theatre Festival, Hunters Hall Primary School’s multicultural event and various corporate and private parties.
While we paused our Pan Clash steel pan soloist competition this year, we utilised the time to implement improvements based on feedback from past participants, tutors and judges. We anticipate a revitalised Pan Clash in October 2023.
Looking ahead to 2024, we are excited to further harness the power of steel pan music in enhancing community well-being and deepening our collaborations across our networks.

School-O-Rama 2023 at Trevor Bailey Sports Ground in Dulwich, was a resounding success, marking an annual highlight in our calendar. This year's event was especially memorable with the introduction of the vibrant and talented Coco P as our new host. His energy and enthusiasm added an extra layer of excitement to the festivities.
The championship was a fiercely contested affair, with nine schools participating, each showcasing their unique steel pan talents. The standout performers, Harris Academy Coleraine Park, emerged as the champions, a testament to their dedication and skill. Their
victory was not just in name; they embodied the spirit of music and community of School-O-Rama champions.
A significant contributor to the success of School-O-Rama 2023 was UKON Careers. As a dynamic organisation dedicated to empowering young people through career guidance and skills development, UKON Careers' involvement added a layer of meaningful engagement to the event. Their sponsorship of the prize not only rewarded musical excellence but also aligned with their mission of nurturing young talent. UKON Careers, known for a TRE] — = — organising the Barking Carnival, offered the champions an opportunity to perform at this prestigious 9 ' iP ‘' ; a7a% \ \ event in July, further amplifying their victory.
Kingsdale Foundation School, the reigning champions, delivered an exceptional performance at both
School-O-Rama and the Barking Carnival. Their participation highlighted the continuity and growth in musical talent that School-O-Rama fosters year after year. The prize money, aside from being a token of recognition, was a support towards nurturing these young musicians' continued growth.
The success of School-O-Rama 2023 is a shining example of how music can bring communities together, celebrating culture and talent. The participation of numerous schools and the support from organisations like UKON Careers reinforce the importance of music in education and community development. As we look back on this event, we are reminded of the joy, unity and educational value that steel pan music continues to bring to our communities.

The Steel Pan Trust's Pan Therapy all-inclusive initiative has been a cornerstone of our community outreach and engagement efforts. Over the past year, this program has brought the joy and therapeutic benefits of steel pan music to a wide and diverse audience, with a particular focus on senior citizens.
In 2022, we received a grant from Awards For All for a project aimed at senior citizens in partnership with Northolt High School. The success of this project, as detailed in our evaluation report available on our website, led to an ongoing collaboration. We now perform annually at Northolt High School's senior citizens Christmas party, an event that has become a highlight for both our musicians and the attendees, who express immense
appreciation for these performances.
Our commitment to senior citizen projects continued to grow. In the spring, we collaborated with the Togetherness Community Centre in South London to deliver a series of successful all-inclusive workshops. These sessions, attended predominantly by senior citizens and families, were so well-
received that plans are underway to continue these sessions into 2024.
A particularly noteworthy achievement was our Northolt all-inclusive workshops, conducted in collaboration with the Community First Foundation at the Rectory Park Community Centre. These workshops saw over 80 participants over 12 months, underscoring the appeal and impact of our programs. This project gained significant recognition, being featured on BBC The One Show, which also showcased our street performance in Southampton. This exposure not only highlighted our community work but also brought the captivating essence of steel pan music to a broader audience.
Thanks to a grant from the Mayor of London, we expanded this project across the city, engaging over 100 people in 12 months. This expansion is a testament to the growing interest and need for such inclusive musical experiences in our communities.
Our all-inclusive workshops are designed to be accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of musical background or ability. These sessions provide a welcoming and supportive environment where participants can explore and enjoy the art of steel pan music, contributing significantly to their well-being and sense of community. As we look to the future, we are excited about the possibility of extending our Pan Therapy projects, further enriching the lives of senior citizens and other community members across London.
