Out in the Bay Annual report: October 2022- October 2023

Out in The Bay is a LGBTQIA registered charity that is based in the Lancaster and Morecambe area. Our mission is to support individuals from the community, with any issues they may be experiencing at point of contact with the service. These issues include but are not limited to reducing social isolation, gender identity, sexual health, Hep C and H.I.V support, addiction issues, housing issues and general wellbeing.

The charity was established in 2008, born from the CEO’s quest to provide an avenue of support for people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or intersex (LGBTQIA) in the Lancaster and Morecambe area. Despite advances in furthering the rights of LGBTQIA individuals, the sad reality is that the individuals lives from the community still remain poorly understood by people in mainstream society. Discrimination and prejudice remain very prevalent. The charities service provision is as much needed now

Service delivery

Feedback

Foreword by Robert Mee C.E.O

Reflecting back to 2008 when I established the charity, my main goal was to create a support service that was easy accessible to the LGBTQ community. Back then I could not have envisioned the service to be where it is today. This is a testament all our incredible stakeholders. Their unwavering support, dedication, and contributions have been instrumental in creating a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment for individuals of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. Their ongoing commitment to our cause has not only transformed lives but has also ignited hope, fostered understanding, and championed equality. This support has come in many forms, that includes continuous advocacy, whether through donations, volunteer work, or vocal support.

Following the implementation of a Project Manager in order to maximise our service output, it was forecasted that the past 12 months would bring challenge, change and opportunity to the charity, as we attempted to diversify our services to fulfill our vision of facilitating a more compassionate and equitable society, whilst continuing to supporting individuals often marginalised and stigmatised.

Our forecasts ultimately came true! We have worked in partnership to establish a supported housing service for young adults from the LGBTQIA community, provided warm spaces that offered food and activities to combat the cost of living crisis and enhanced our support services via O.I.T.B. All of which have been a tremendous success at a time when the country has suffered painful hardships. Our biggest success continues to be shinning a beacon of light to let individuals know they are not alone.

Together, we are making small strides towards a more accepting and loving world for everyone, regardless of who they are or who they love. However, it is imperative we continue this work together and champion the right to equality, fairness and compassion.

Best wishes,

Robert

Service Delivery

In order to fulfil our operational goals over the past 12 months we have split our service into 3 area’s of delivery:

  1. No Labelz Housing- provides supported accommodation to young adults (aged between 18-25yr olds) that identify as LGBTQIA and are experiencing homelessness.

  2. O.I.T.B in-house support services provide 1-1 support, counselling support and focused group support to members of the LGBTQIA community.

  3. O.I.T.B community support services is responsible in facilitating Lancaster and Morecambe Pride, providing a warm space, breakfast club and a drop in services for advice and guidance around issues attached to the cost of living crisis and addiction. This

support service is available to any individual from the Morecambe and Lancaster Community.

No Labelz Housing 12 month’s overview……

Over the past 12 month’s O.I.T.B has worked in partnership with Calico housing to provide

a unique and specialised safe and secure supported housing projects (No Labelz) to 1825 year olds from the LGBTQIA Community. Individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness are referred into the service by the local council. At present the housing projects has the capacity to support 4 individuals at any one time. Intense housing management and a person centred support planning approach is taken to ensure each individuals needs are met. Even though the service is in it’s infancy it is all ready become a strong asset within the wider community provision. The past 12 months has enabled the service to provide a inclusive safe haven to 6 individuals whilst enabling them to increase their social and emotional capital, ultimately supporting their reintegration back into the wider community.

O.I.T.B (in- house support) 12 month’s overview………

Within the past 12 month’s this unique service has cast a wider reach to otherwise marginalised and socially isolated individuals within the LGBTQIA community. The aim has always been to meet the service user wherever they are at in life. This approach has enabled us to continue and enhance our partnership working with a multitude of health and wellbeing, social care services, local authority and medical services. One of our main drivers this year has been to impart our knowledge via training to other organisations.

month’s overview…….

This aspect of our service has grown exponentially during the course of the past 12 months. This has it afforded us the opportunity to continue to advocate, raise awareness, promote social justice for the LGBTQIA community and be front and centre in providing a vital services to the general community of Lancaster and Morecambe.
