HCR is a charity concerned with the treatment, rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of cats in the Beds, Herts and Bucks areas. We provide food, cat litter, bedding and veterinary care as well as rehabilitation for cats **Summary of the objects of the** and kittens in our foster care. We also operate a trap, neuter and release **charity set out in its** scheme for feral cats, which helps to reduce the number of unwanted **governing document** kittens, as well as reduce cross infection of diseases such as FIV and feline leukaemia. HCR operates via a network of foster homes. Currently, our fosterers only have the facilities to take just one or two cats in at a time, but still make a valuable contribution to the rescue and welfare of the cats and kittens that would otherwise be homeless and starving. As we rescue and rehabilitate within our own homes, we are in desperate need of more people who could foster for us, or provide use of safe and weatherproof sheds/outbuildings for us to house feral cats after neutering and so have had a year of vetting for suitable new foster carers. HCR spay / neuter all cats (and kittens over 6 months or at 2kgs in **Summary of the main** weight) before they are available for adoption. Any kittens not meeting **activities undertaken for the** this criteria are adopted on the understanding that the owners will be **public benefit in relation to** contacted and chased up for confirmation that the kitten has been spayed **these objects (include within** / neutered. This year, we have continued to microchip all cats over the **this section the statutory** age of 12 weeks. This is to promote and educate responsible pet, as well **declaration that trustees have** as to identify owners should a cat be found injured or deceased. **had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity** All involved with the running of Homeless Cat Rescue abide by the **Commission on public** guidance issued by the Charities Commission. **benefit)**

## Section D                      Achievements and erformance p

**Summary of the main** The key objective of HCR is to rescue as many homeless or abandoned **achievements of the charity** cats as we can; providing them with the very best care and allowing them **during the year** time for rehabilitation, so that they find the best home possible for their circumstances. 2020 has been a year like no other, as it has for everyone. Adoptions started off slowly, as always in February and then COVID-19 hit the UK in March. Luckily, just before lockdown, most of our available cats and kittens were home-checked and adopted. When lockdown began in the 3[rd] week of March 2020, we immediately sought government guidance and assurance that we could continue with our rescues; also the feeding of the feral cat colonies. So, HCR continued as “normally” as possible, bearing in mind the inevitable changes to veterinary practices and waiting times for essential procedures such as spay, neuter and vaccinations. April saw no adoptions and a vast slump in monetary donations, as we were unable to get out and fundraise. The saving grace was that we didn’t have a vet bill for April. And the general public were very generous in ordering off our Amazon wishlist, which saved a great deal of costs for food and litter supplies. For cats in our care that became available for adoption, we switched to rigorous virtual home checks and interviews, to ensure that we continued to find the correct home for the cats and kittens in our care. This proved to be a great success. During the summer of 2020, we had a huge increase in cats and kittens, due to a hoarding situation and also due to people taking extended holidays back to their home countries and abandoning their cats here in the UK. Thankfully, as COVID restrictions began to ease over the summer months, our volunteers were able to get out and arrange boot sales to raise funds. We fully support our Trap, Neuter and Release campaign and continued this work throughout the year, to attempt to humanely control feral cat colonies in Luton and the surrounding area and to ensure feral cats get any additional veterinary care that they need. We maintain our belief that no healthy cat should be euthanised and that reflects in the still very low number of cats which have had to be put to sleep, only on the recommendation of our vets.

## **Section E                    Financial review**

**Brief statement of the**

**charity’s policy on reserves**

No official reserve, but in 2020, we have agreed to maintain the reserve of £8000 to cover increasing costs of emergency veterinary treatment during COVID-19, in case of any cat requiring extensive veterinary care or UK wide search campaign.

**Details of any funds materially in deficit**

## **Further financial review details (Optional information)**

You **may choose** to include additional information, where relevant about:

- the charity’s principal sources of funds (including any fundraising);

- how expenditure has supported the key objectives of the charity;

- investment policy and objectives including any ethical investment policy adopted.

HCR’s expenditure has again been in the payment of veterinary bills, for essential treatment, especially as we have seen a considerable increase in the cost of veterinary care, despite receiving a charity discount at some surgeries. Due to COVID-19, we have had to look further for essential veterinary procedures such as spay and neuter operations. A hoarder situation in Summer 2020, where HCR rescued 19 cats and kittens from one household made a considerable dent in the bank account, as many were poorly and had to have extensive veterinary treatment before we could consider offering them for adoption.

Our Trap, Neuter, Release scheme is sometimes costly in respect of veterinary bills, but extremely worthwhile, so we accept that cost entirely.

Principal sources of fundraising this year continued to be from adoptions, online donations (via Paypal / fundraising sites and a link on our website) and selling donated items on eBay and Facebook selling pages. Due to COVID-19, income from boot sales diminished.

Facebook has been an invaluable way of raising both the charity’s profile and also fundraising. The ability for our supporters to offer to raise money on Facebook during their birthday month has been of considerable help to us, with donations coming in on a monthly basis.

Gift Aid from donations is extremely important to HCR and we always ensure that eligible people complete a form when they make a donation to the charity.

Our seasonally themed catnip toys, knitted by volunteers did not sell as well in 2020, mainly due to the fact that the public have not been allowed inside veterinary clinics, where we stock them, due to COVID-19 – we have however, continued to sell them online.

Our “Feed a Stray at Christmas” eBay campaign was another success and helped to increase donations in the months of December. It also helps to raise the profile of our charity to a wider audience and we get support from people from all over the UK, so much so that we have decided to run it all year long in 2021, especially as we ended 2020 back in lockdown, with no possibility of raising funds through markets and street collections.
