ABOUT US

Advancing in life and helping young people by developing their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature and responsible individuals; Advancing education;
Relieving unemployment;
Providing recreational and leisure time activity in the interests of social welfare for people living around benefits who have need by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, poverty or social and economic circumstances with a view to improving the conditions of life of such persons.
CHAIR OF TRUSTEES — CLAIRE READING
2020 was the start of a turning point for Young People Count. I took on the role of chairing the Board of Trustees in November 2019 as we looked towards a big year for finding a long-term home for YPC.
Our research into the most appropriate premises for our work had included taking a one-year temporary lease at the Oddfellows public house on Union Street. This gave us an opportunity to trial and experience a consistent demand for youth services.
We employed a detached youth worker on a part-time basis and used the upstairs space at Costa Coffee in the town centre for a social event on Thursday evenings, which became very popular with young people. When the Pandemic hit, things came to an abrupt halt in March 2020, but the trustees continued to work hard, building our new website, accessing grants and funding and, latterly, developing our new premises which will open in 2021. I would like to thank all of the trustees for their absolute determination throughout this period and, following a recruitment drive for new trustees and volunteers, we are all working together to provide a great space for young people in Pocklington.
HIGHLIGHTS
There were two significant moves for our services for young people this year – one was to work with our detached youth worker to develop pop-up youth events on weekday evenings, which were launched in November 2019 and ran for six weeks. They included activities such as a glow-in-the-dark football cage, circus skills, LED hoola hoops, food stalls, refreshments and music playing from a marquee. There was an opportunity to provide youth activities on board a customised “youth” bus on West Green.
The other key development came in May 2020 when our new website went live with our new brand image and identity, created by a local design agency working with our trustees. Crucially, this allowed us to engage with young people at home during the Pandemic, through online activities and reaching out to them to offer support. Both the detached youth work and our online engagement enabled us to gather important feedback from young people and we knew at this stage that they wanted a place to call their own — somewhere they can go after school, in the evening and at the weekend, where they can be themselves and access support, advice and training.
With trustees using the Lockdown period to look for funding and premises locally, by the summer we had secured our new premises and recruited a project manager to help the trustees develop activities for young people.
FINANCE
We started the year in September 2019 with a balance of £49,720. Of this, £9,700 was given by a Lottery grant specifically for the employment of a detached youth worker and the provision of associated activities for young people. This included subsidising the highly-successful weekly sessions at Costa Coffee from January 2020 until Lockdown began in March. We were given permission to use some of this Lottery funding to set up our website and begin providing online events.
In August 2019, the Trustees had decided to set aside £38,000 for the acquisition and operating of our own premises for a minimum of two years; this remains our top priority. That this is possible is thanks to our many supporters since May 2013, especially those whose monthly contributions give us both the possibility and the imperative to take this important step forward. The National Lottery gave us a COVID-19 grant of £9,710 in August 2020 towards supporting young people through the appointment of a project manager and also four months’ start-up rent.
We are very grateful to David Brown CPFA (Chartered Public Finance Accountant) who independently examines our accounts every year, pro bono. His careful inspection and checking provides the trustees and YPC supporters with the assurance that our finances are being managed correctly and in line with best practice.
THE FUTURE
As with all charity activities across the country, our plans will be subject to whatever is permitted safely through the Pandemic, and we now focus on building a team of volunteers to ensure that we can provide a range of services and activities in our new premises at 17 Railway Street on weekday evenings from May 2021.
