Luke Cawley is responsible for implementing our projects. He both initiates new projects and responds to requests and invitations for help from organizations and individuals, with priority given to those projects which make best use of his gifting and best fulfil the objects of the charity. The trustees are in regular consultation with Luke and have both a pastoral oversight responsibility and also provide guidance in his daily implementation of the charity’s objects. Luke also oversees and develops our expanding team of volunteers in Romania, as well as those individuals who work there with Chrysolis on a paid freelance basis, who in 2020/21 included Lucian Balanescu and Ioana Glitia. During the course of the year, our relationship of the Romanian work, as well the means by which Romanian freelancers are paid, changed, and this change is detailed later in the report. ## **Objects and Activities** The objects of Chrysolis are - (1) To advance the Christian faith for the benefit of the public through quality resources, training and events, in accordance with the following statement of faith (‘the statement of faith’): - We believe in… - The one true God who lives eternally in three persons—the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. - The love, grace and sovereignty of God in creating, sustaining, ruling, redeeming and judging the world. - The divine inspiration and supreme authority of the Old and New Testament Scriptures, which are the written Word of God—fully trustworthy for faith and conduct. - The dignity of all people, made male and female in God's image to love, be holy and care for creation, yet corrupted by sin, which incurs divine wrath and judgement. 2 Chrysolis Report of the Trustees & Accounts for the year ended 31 March 2021 Continued - The incarnation of God’s eternal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ—born of the virgin Mary; truly divine and truly human, yet without sin. - The atoning sacrifice of Christ on the cross: dying in our place, paying the price of sin and defeating evil, so reconciling us with God. - The bodily resurrection of Christ, the first fruits of our resurrection; his ascension to the Father, and his reign and mediation as the only Saviour of the world. - The justification of sinners solely by the grace of God through faith in Christ. - The ministry of God the Holy Spirit, who leads us to repentance, unites us with Christ through new birth, empowers our discipleship and enables our witness. - The Church, the body of Christ both local and universal, the priesthood of all believers—given life by the Spirit and endowed with the Spirit's gifts to worship God and proclaim the gospel, promoting justice and love. - The personal and visible return of Jesus Christ to fulfil the purposes of God, who will raise all people to judgement, bring eternal life to the redeemed and eternal condemnation to the lost, and establish a new heaven and new earth. - (2) To advance the education of members of the public involved in communication of the Christian faith, through the continued development of their individual capabilities, competencies, skills and understanding in subjects relevant to such communication. ## **Achievements and Performance** It was both a difficult and also strategically pivotal year. The global pandemic caused the cancellation of many of our intended and scheduled projects. But, despite this, our core projects in Romania — Advance and Engage — remained viable and active in a reduced and sporadic form, and positioned to both relaunch and expand as the restrictions of the pandemic continue to subside. ## **Romania** Romania has been the primary geographical focus of Chrysolis’ work over the past year. One of our key projects is Engage, through which we ordinarily partner with Romanian Christian student groups and local churches, to help organize and provide speakers for open and free public events designed to provide an introduction to the Christian faith for university students. Those we had planned were all sadly cancelled due to the pandemic. 3 Chrysolis Report of the Trustees & Accounts for the year ended 31 March 2021 Continued We were, though, able to beginning planning some online webinars in partnership with the Romanian affiliate of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (“IFES”, UK Registered Charity Number 247919). At these online events we will both offer training and development on engaging student audiences in discussions of the enduring relevance of the Christian faith, and also continue keeping alive the vision of doing so in physical and on-campus locations as soon as legally and safely possible. We were also able to provide speakers for online events around the country and, as shifting restrictions allowed, physically give presentations in a range of cities and contexts over the course of the year, as well as providing speakers for international online public events hosted by organizations such as Veritas Forum in the Netherlands, and Cambridge Inter-Collegiate Christian Union in the UK. Advance, a series of publically-available courses on aspects of the Christian faith, has continued to run in Bucharest, albeit with physical events being more sporadic. Events included: - Our multi-week course on Conversational Apologetics, in-person in Bucharest. - A series of online webinars, featuring international speakers such as American philosophy professor Paul Copan and popular author Dan Kimball, centred around big questions regarding the Bible. - Online reading groups where participants discuss books such as CS Lewis’ Screwtape Letters, and GK Chesterton’s Orthodoxy. We also launched an online video channel, Diapologeticus, as a spin-off of Engage, which features Romanianlanguage discussion of various issues from a Christian perspective. A free regular Romanian-language apologetics newsletter, Crede & Cerceteaza, was also launched during this period and our subscriber list grew rapidly. In mid-2020, we also finally achieved our goal of legally-registering a new locally-led non-profit, Chrysolis Romania (or, legally, Asociaţia Chrysolis), which will function as our partner in the work over coming years. Chrysolis Romania has an entirely Romanian staff and board, and our aim is to transition towards the core running costs of Chrysolis Romania being entirely financed by Romanians. Following the registration of Chrysolis Romania, Lucian was transitioned from working with Chrysolis UK on freelance basis to being contracted to Chrysolis Romania. A memorandum of understanding, approved by the boards of both organizations, included the following key points: - Both Chrysolis Romania and Chrysolis UK are —as of August 2020 — distinct and autonomous entities, whose boards make their own decisions, and each organization is responsible for its own compliance with local legislation. - Chrysolis UK and Chrysolis Romania agree the following objects: 4 Chrysolis Report of the Trustees & Accounts for the year ended 31 March 2021 Continued - To advance the Christian faith for the benefit of the public through quality resources, training and events. - To advance the education of members of the public involved in communication of the Christian faith, whether publicly or interpersonally, through the continued development of their individual capabilities, competencies, skills and understanding in subjects relevant to such communication. - All existing Chrysolis projects in Romania, including Engage and Advance, will henceforth be considered joint projects of Chrysolis UK and Chrysolis Romania. - Chrysolis UK will seek to support Chrysolis Romania by providing personnel on either a voluntary or contracted basis. Areas of support — if possible — will include providing speakers for events, advisory support, logistical assistance, training, and some fundraising on behalf of Chrysolis Romania. - Chrysolis UK agrees to speak on behalf of Chrysolis Romania and receive funds on their behalf which will be passed on to Chrysolis Romania, subject to appropriate reporting and Anti-Money Laundering checks. When fundraising in this way, Chrysolis UK will make it clear to any foundations, trusts or other donors that they agree to transfer the funds to the Romanian entity and will report on their behalf. Chrysolis Romania agrees to provide full reports of how the funds are spent and statement of accounts when requested. - This agreement will be reviewed annually, each February, by Director of Chrysolis UK and the President of Chrysolis Romania. Any concerns arising will be reported verbally back to their respective boards. Both Chrysolis Romania and Chrysolis UK. In January 2021 we were also able to add a second paid Romanian member of staff, Ioana Glitia, for whose role Chrysolis UK was able to obtain funding, and who is contracted to Chrysolis Romania. She serves as Lead Project Developer, overseeing logistical and financial aspects of the work relating to its growth and sustainability. Luke was involved, on behalf of Chrysolis UK, in the recruitment and interview process, and continues to oversee the team in Bucharest and report back to the board of Chrysolis UK. ## **Churches** Luke and Lucian have been able to speak at a number of local church-based events in the UK and Romania, focusing their teaching especially on question of how contemporary culture and religion relate together. 5 Chrysolis Report of the Trustees & Accounts for the year ended 31 March 2021 Continued ## **Financial Review** The financial statements have been subjected to an Independent Examination, as they are exempt from the audit requirements of section 144 Charities Act 2011. The Independent Examination was completed January 26[th] , 2022. Gifts received in the period amounted to £36,926 (last year: £40,741), with a further £606 (last year: £0) given for the restricted use of work in Romania. A grant of £9,000 (last year: £10,000) was received from a UK-based charitable trust towards the costs of Lucian Balanescu for his consultancy role, and Ioana in her new role. The sum of £0 (last year: £3,885) was recovered in respect of donations made under the Gift Aid scheme in previous financial years, and a total of £16,724 (last year: £0) was received from HMRC under their furlough scheme. Salary costs of £37,874 (last year: £39,426) were paid out during the accounting period. Travelling and subsistence costs for the year were £2,477 (last year: £4,924) for expenses incurred in this and the previous financial year. The sum of £0 (last year: £162) was used for the production of a promotional video. A further £169 (last year: £269) was paid to PayPal for transaction fees. A total of £13,151 (last year: £9,830) was paid for costs related Lucian and Ioana’s roles, while £0 (last year: £3,720) was paid to Daniela Dinu for her administrative work in Romania. Net expenditure for the year of £12,525 (last year: £3,704) and our end of year cash funds were £17,448 (last year: £8,469). ## **Public Benefit** We confirm that the trustees have paid due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit in planning the activities the charity should undertake. ## **Plans for Future Periods** Luke, in partnership with the Romanian organization, will continue to develop the work in Romania, speaking at and helping launch/run public educative events regarding the Christian faith. They will be developing the work initiated through the Engage conference, and also further expanding the Advance project, including nationally. We also anticipate a continued partnership with FEUER and IFES and we are working on plans to help them implement public events in both Romania, as and when restrictions allow, and also further afield. We will also be working closely on staff and financial development with Chrysolis Romania to ensure that — at a minimum — their current core two salaries (Lucian & Ioana) can be entirely covered by local supporters by December 31[st] , 2022. As the work in Romania continues to become more independent, we hope to begin developing work in other locations and countries. 6 Chrysolis Report of the Trustees & Accounts for the year ended 31 March 2021 Continued ## **Trustees’ Responsibilities** The trustees are responsible for preparing the Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and regulations. The trustees are required to prepare financial statements for each financial year in accordance with United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice (United Kingdom Accounting Standards and applicable law). The financial statements are required by law to give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of its incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that period. In preparing these financial statements, the trustees should follow best practice and: - select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently; - make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; - state whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed: and - prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation. The trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that financial statements comply with the applicable law, regulations and the trust deed.
