Comments from the Chair
Every year, I reflect on the Club’s activities, and every year I am surprised by what has been accomplished during the year by our members, our community group attendees and the various people who use our diverse facilities.
We have always been a Club focused on serving the community with our limited resources and plenty of goodwill from our neighbours, friends and supporters. This year has been no exception. We have seen continued high volumes of users in both the Table Tennis and Boxing Clubs, with the Club in constant operation throughout the year.
It is hard to imagine the hall has been serving as Twickenham Brunswick’s premises since early 1966, being new when we moved in, although the club itself is coming up to its own 100 year birthday since its initial inception. As is common with venerably mature buildings, our facilities have needed care and attention to allow us to benefit from them as they continue to offer us space to join together as a community.
This has had a corresponding impact on the availability of our facilities and an ongoing challenge to balance budgets and still operate effectively. We have undertaken major repairs to the roof, electrics, fire safety measures, upstairs areas, heating systems, entry doors and car park arrangements. This has been done with the view to making our facilities safe for all and in

particular, to make them more child friendly, to take account of our nursery group and school users.
We are fortunate to have received a grant from SporTedd for boxing equipment and assistance from the London Borough of Richmond in the form of rent and rate rebates. We have also received support from the Borough to present an application to be considered for capital assistance to repair the roof of our main hall and repair the fabric of our boxing club. The boxing club building has been challenged by issues arising from a need to renew the ventilation measures. These have become more pressing as usage of the boxing facilities has increased.
On the management committee front, our long term Treasurer Alex Garcia stepped down in February, due to conflicting pressures of work. He remains a member of the committee and we would like to thank him for his continued long service and support over many years. He has been ably succeeded by Emily Orr and has kindly agreed to offer advice to help Emily get settled in.
Our Projects for 2025/26
We continue to actively research alternatives for our minivan. We face increasing challenges in addressing the MOT requirements as our minivan is quite old. The Management Committee has agreed to fund half of the cost and launch a campaign to raise the other half of the funds for a replacement. We will be using a GoFundMe web enabled site to administer donations received. The Club will provide £5000. We need your help to raise the remaining £5000 needed to purchase a second-hand people carrier which we hope will be able to seat between 7-9 people. The GoFundMe site will allow everyone to help us reach the target of £5000 and match the contribution from our own funds.
We will also focus on applying for capital grants to replace our roof and carry out other structural projects, helping set us up to operate well over the coming years.
Our growing list of partners and collaborators work with us to engage the community in wider activities by using the club facilities. We are happy to be able to support their good endeavours by providing a much-needed space for movement and socialising. A full list is available later in this report on page 14.
Governance
The club is responsible for funding its own running costs, maintenance, purchase of equipment and activities. This is done through membership fees, nightly subscriptions, fundraising and club lettings.

Twickenham Brunswick Club for Young People Annual Report 2024/2025
The Twickenham Brunswick Club for Young People is a registered charity and is run by volunteers.
The Management Committee has been bolstered by the addition of local residents Madeleine and Colin MacLiesh, who have joined us. They have, with willing enthusiasm, taken up many tasks of facilitating maintenance activities, identifying potential suppliers and organising for repairs and assessment visits to be carried out. Their participation has meant a significant shift in the efficiency with which matters are identified and addressed for the benefit of all.
Our thanks
-
The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames assists the club financially by way of a 100% rent subsidy and relief in respect of Business Rates.
-
The Club is fortunate to have Riches and Co acting as our honorary accountants and they have drawn up the accounts for the Club. We thank them for their support.
-
We are singularly lucky to continue to benefit from the care and attention given to us by Gill McMillan, who acts as our Honorary Salaries Secretary. Gill conscientiously monitors developments in the world of work and then supports the club with her expertise to manage payroll and pension issues for our volunteers and club leader.
-
Dave Paulowski and Ford Davy are our Table Tennis and Boxing Club Leaders respectively. They provide invaluable coaching support and encouragement to successive generations of youngsters as they begin their journey in their respective sports. We are able to show significant successes, with contestants competing at regional and national level. The Club would not be able to operate without them as Club Leaders and their students demonstrate, through their successes, just how professionally the Club Leaders fulfill their roles.
-
Our lettings arrangements are handled by Sharon (Chai Siang Phua), who as well as being our UK2CC Table Tennis Coach, diligently handles the administration with all of our partners, ensuring accounts are issued and settled promptly. We are grateful for her unfailing efforts to manage this efficiently.
-
Our thanks also go to all of our neighbours and our community around us, who provide support and assistance, helping to make the Club a vibrant and welcoming place for all.
-
My personal thanks go to members of the Management Committee, without whom I would not be able to have effective oversight and support for the Club’s activities.

Twickenham Brunswick Club for Young People Annual Report 2024/2025
The History of Twickenham Brunswick Boys’ Club
It all started in 1925…
In 1925 a young man watching some teenagers kicking a football about on Twickenham Green suggested they ought to join or form a team. Before long that team was a reality and playing football under the banner of “Twickenham Rangers”, with the young man, Colvin Docker, as their manager. They quickly realised that they needed a meeting place and Mr Docker persuaded the local branch of World War One veterans, “Toc H” to allow the boys to meet in their rooms at the Church Institute in First Cross Road. Here there was an important name change, and Twickenham Boys’ Club was born.
A temporary pause, then work to create new premises
In the succeeding years up to the outbreak of World War Two in 1939, the Club moved its headquarters several times ending in the Drill Hall in Aragon Road. With war imminent the Club received its marching orders and in Mr Docker’s absence on active service, the acting club leader Mr Hartley had the presence of mind to contact Fortescue House School whose Headmaster Mr Pearce generously agreed to store the equipment and furniture “for the duration”.
For short periods when Mr Docker was here in England, he resuscitated the Boys Club, and after peace had been declared he used his good offices with the Air Ministry to persuade them to give the dining halls of RAF Bentley Priory to become the headquarters of the Boys’ Club. A site was required, many permissions had to be obtained, and the finance had to be raised.
Parts of the steel built former dining halls had rusted beyond use and the final plan incorporated breeze blocks to form spacious premises, with a large gymnasium/games room and small workshop on one side, toilets, kitchen, canteen, billiards room and quiet room on the other side with a middle section containing the office and ladies toilets joining the two sides to form an H.
Help from the local Council and the Brunswick Trust
Twickenham Council granted the lease of the site at Clarendon Crescent. The final problem of money was solved when the Brunswick Trust, formed by RAF prisoners of war in Germany offered to pay the last £500 with the proviso that the name be changed. The whole cost of the new building was £2,500 and there was a bonus when Mr Hartley told the Leader about the equipment at Fortescue House which was retrieved and enabled the club to function.
A new beginning in 1948
In July 1948 the Twickenham Brunswick Boys’ Club was officially opened and with Mr Docker again serving in Iraq the leadership passed to Lawrie Jones. Lawrie was supported by a team of

former members who became club helpers and facilitated the wide-ranging programme of activities at the club and on the sports pitches. Mr Docker took over the leadership again in 1951 and as well as maintaining the club’ programme, he began planning for a new building on the same site. The Middlesex Association of Boys’ Clubs was formed in 1960, and the Club transferred its membership of the London Federation of Boy’s Clubs to the new organization.
A new building and visit by royalty
In 1963 Lawrie Jones was appointed Organizing Secretary to MABC and had the pleasure of taking responsibility for building the new club headquarters. With the help of grants from Government and Local Government, MABC provided the finance for the new premises at a cost of £20,100 including equipment and professional fees. In May 1965 the foundation stone of the present building was laid and HRH the late Duke of Gloucester visited the club in April 1966.
Strength, depth and variety of the programme through Club Leaders
It had become necessary to appoint a full-time Club Leader and in 1966 the Club appointed Tony Whelan who was to hold the post until severe illness overtook him 30 years later. In that time the Club had tremendous success in its wide-ranging activities, winning several times the MABC Trophy for Sporting Endeavour which was awarded annually to the Club with an all-round programme as well as success in competitions.
Camping and outdoor pursuits, always an important part of the club programme, continued and skiing trips abroad, adventure days and weekends became a feature. In the early 1970’s the Club and MABC erected the floodlit Play Area on part of the car parking space to widen the programme of activities even more. The MABC annual End to End Walk gave members the opportunity to raise money for their club and to support local and national charities. Under these schemes, money was raised for two Guide Dogs for the Blind - Pepsi and Brunswick.
Shifting gears into the new millennium with the support of volunteers
In 1994 Tony Whelan was forced to retire due to ill health. The London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames continued to support the appointment of a full-time leader until 1 April 2001, when all such funding was withdrawn. Since that time the Club has been operating very successfully under entirely voluntary leadership but inevitably with some restriction in its programme. Although the Club now offers fewer activities than before, it provides those activities to a very high standard. The Table Tennis players and Boxers compete with distinction at national level.
A new boxing gym in 2013
After much effort from Lawrie, fellow committee members Julie Brown and Gill McMillan and the London Borough of Richmond, the Club welcomed the completion in 2013, alongside the main

premises, of the new Gymnasium in 2013 at a cost of £540,000. The new purpose built premises enabled the Boxers to develop their programme to a high level
Upgrade to our Games Area
2017-18 The club was made an award of £30,000 as a grant to refurbish our Multi Usage Games Area which had fallen into disrepair and was unsafe and uninviting. The tarmac was replaced and painted, overgrown trees and foliage around the pitch were removed. The surround boards were replaced and refitted and more rigid fencing erected. The area is now an appealing facility for both our members and the local community to use. Pictures of current members of the playgroup illustrate how it is put to good use.
Another pause - for COVID
March 2020 saw the start of the pandemic. When Covid hit, the club had to close down its activities in line with government advice. On re-opening, we found we had lost several of the volunteers that had helped run our Junior Club activity night and since then it has not been able to re-open. There are still opportunities for young people to come to the club to meet their friends in a congenial atmosphere and select from a range of other activities such as various arts and crafts sessions, snooker and pool. Thanks to grants awarded to assist with re-opening the club, we were able to upgrade our heating system that fell into disrepair during the closed period.
From April 2024, we welcomed some new friends…
The club is now focusing on running as a Table Tennis and Boxing club and providing a facility for a variety of providers of activities for youth and other young people.
Mid 2024 saw an approach from a pre-school group, Strawberry Hill Forest School, seeking to utilise our upstairs area for their purposes. The potential extra letting income made the project a good opportunity to gain more financial security and support a local group that would be valuable for our local community. Twickenham Brunswick Club used this as a prompt to enhance its facilities. We overhauled and upgraded our electrical, gas and fire safety /security systems to bring them up to an appropriate level and did a bit of redecorating at the same time. We are thrilled to have the group with us and look forward to many years’ future collaboration.

Table Tennis Club Leader’s Report
Club Nights and Activities
Our Junior table tennis section has maintained its numbers over the past year. Every session we hold is extremely busy, usually with all nine tables being utilised. Our attendance figures in excess of 6000 for our table tennis sessions this year have beaten our previous record season of 5688 last year.
This year, we entered three teams into the South West Middlesex Table Tennis League. This is one team less than last year, due to players not being available. We entered three teams into the newly named Cadet British Clubs League and three into the Junior British Clubs League.
Wednesday morning, our own Over 50’s table tennis sessions had been running well, with usually eight players attending, but recently our numbers have doubled. It's proving to be a great session, when the older generations can come and play table tennis and socialise with drinks and biscuits.
We continue our association with Teddington TTC, Age UK, Nishikawa Karate and Pedal Project who regularly book the club to run their sessions. We welcomed Ace Trampolining as of January 2023. They now operate in the club on Wednesday evenings. We have made our club available to St James’ school for table tennis sessions on Tuesday afternoons.
Although our membership/ attendance fees have not increased, we have again seen another rise in income this year, reflecting the good numbers that are attending our sessions. Increased

numbers have been accommodated a little by earlier opening times for juniors, so freeing up tables later for seniors.
Bookings for children’s parties have increased, as we are a centre recommended by party activity provider Lazer Lions. The party venue seems to be much appreciated by parents, as it provides a great space that can be blacked out. It can make use of tables and chairs for party food, we permit use of the kitchen and we are always on hand. It is often this extra support to be as accommodating as possible which ensures that parties run smoothly.
We have continued to offer the club as a venue for the Mall School, should they need to use it when bad weather means that their outdoor games sessions have to be cancelled. Skylarks also continue to use the club, facilitating Ed of Pedal Project, who can run cycling sessions with pupils who have a disability.
During the year, we have carried out a number of maintenance tasks that have benefitted the club, our members and users. More powerful convector fan radiators have been installed and everyone has expressed their appreciation for the much warmer hall. The radiators in the art room have been serviced and new valves fitted, making that a more pleasant environment. In the last weeks of the year, the MUGA boards were removed and fencing taken to the floor. This makes the area look cleaner and reduces the need for continual maintenance.

Boxing Club Leader's Report
The Boxing club has had a very successful season once again, with a lot of new boxers just starting to compete. We had our first girl to represent our club, winning all her contests so far.
Attendance of Junior boxers has been very steady. The Club regularly welcomes between 10/20 boxers per session, with a good mix of girls and boys.

We now have a new Boxer / coach who is an elite Boxer. He competed in the Paris Olympics and is hoping to go to the Los Angeles Olympics. This offers great experience which he can pass on to all the Boxers and generally lifts the performance of all who come to the Club.
We have had another boy turn professional boxer this year. This brings the club record to 2 boys in 2 years turning professional. This is a real time illustration of the calibre of boxing coaches who support the Club as volunteers.
During the year, the Boxing Club obtained a grant from SporTedd for new boxing equipment, such as punching bags, gloves, helmets and rings. This was very welcome, and enabled purchases of such items to be used by the boxers. We are looking forward to the new season starting in September and we are hoping to carry on where we left off last season.
