The Trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31st December2022. 

The Trustees have adopted the provisions of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) ‘Accounting and Reporting by Charities’ issued in March 2005.

## **Structure, Governance And Management** 

## **Governing Document** 

The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust and constitutes an unincorporated Charity. 

Kristel Huth is the founder of the charity, and manages the day-to-day operations of the charity. Decisions are made by unanimous agreement of the Trustees during regular meetings throughout the Year. 

## **Recruitment and appointment of new trustees** 

New trustees are recruited by invitation only. All appointments would be based on an assessment of the required abilities, and if applicable, specialist skills required by the board. All current Trustees have 

received training to brief them on their legal obligations under the Charity Law and Trust Deed. Any new Trustees, as a matter of course, have a commensurate level of induction training. 

## **Risk Management** 

The Trustees have a duty to identify and review the risks to which the charity is exposed, and to ensure appropriate controls are in place to provide reasonable assurance against fraud and error. 

## **Objectives And Activities** 

The objectives of the CIO are: 

1. To promote and protect the physical and mental health of children suffering from 

Neuroblastoma a childhood cancer, in the UK through the provision of financial assistance, Support, education and practical advice. 

2. To advance the education of the general public in all areas relating to Neuroblastoma In children. 

## **Public Benefit** 

The trustees have compiled with their duty to public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission.

## **About us** 

Since July 2013, our main aim as a charity has been to make a positive difference to families of a child diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer, with financial and emotional support. The other main aim is to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms in the hope of saving another child's life. 

Every year around 100 children are diagnosed with Neuroblastoma in the UK. With this diagnosis comes emotional and financial pressures for the whole family, on top of caring for their very unwell child, and in some cases more than one child has been diagnosed with the same cancer at the same time. 

## **Our Mission** 

Since the charity was founded, our main mission has been to relieve some of the stress and heartache that comes with having a child diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer.  We have 2 intentions in mind, One: to raise as much awareness of childhood cancer, Neuroblastoma. And two: to support families (both emotionally & financially) when their children are having treatment for this condition. 

The news that a child is seriously unwell is difficult enough to cope with, without the situation being made worse with money worries. Our financial grants are given directly to families battling the financial effects of Neuroblastoma cancer after a child is diagnosed. The grants provided to each family will assist with travel costs to and from hospital, household utility bills, food cost in hospital, and clothing for the child. 

We also offer help to family’s suffering with the emotional side of a child's diagnosis. We feel that this is very beneficial as families are often in so much turmoil over their child’s diagnosis, that they do not think of their own emotional needs. We also offer benefit advice, as again, half of the families we help have no idea of the benefits they could be entitled to.

## **Our Objectives and Activities** 

For the year 2022, Mitchell’s Miracles have been busy trying to raise much needed funds and awareness for Neuroblastoma, within the local community. 

## **Our objectives are:** 

- To provide financial support to the parents/carers of a child going through treatment for Neuroblastoma, childhood cancer. 

- To provide emotional support to family members seeking help with adjusting to the poignant changes in their lives, after their child’s diagnosis. 

- To provide practical advice around benefit issues and help with understanding the process of some benefit claims they may be entitled to. 

- To interact with the social workers & nurses situated across all the specialist oncology hospitals, to help increase the presence of our services and provide the support to the families whose child has been diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. 

- To provide gifts for each child, including their siblings, on special national holidays such as Easter and Christmas. 

- To continue promoting our objectives and activities through our social media platforms and within our community. 

- To make a conscious effort to make a difference to as many families as possible with minimum altercations. 

- To be responsive to all applicants by providing high quality, prompt and empathic assistance. 

- Providing immunotherapy Backpacks & Hickman line bags to children going through treatment. 

Mitchell’s Miracles has achieved these objectives by maintaining a strong connection with our local community and subscribers. We have taken advantage of the many social media platforms to announce our appeals and events with some great response. Our Sponsors and partnerships have supported our charity all year round in various ways including financially as well as helping to raise awareness. Without all of the help and generosity from the above mentioned we wouldn’t have been able to support 48 families with regular financial grants and emotional support this year.

## **Our Projects:** 

## **Financial Support** 

Over 100 children are diagnosed with Neuroblastoma every year in the UK. And between 50 - 60% of these families are impacted financially by their child’s diagnosis. The extra costs which come with this cancer diagnosis, averages around £600.00 every month, resulting in many parents going into debt. Finding out your child has Neuroblastoma, makes your world stop in its tracks. The only thing that you want to focus on is your child, and what needs to happen in 


order for your child to get them well again. 

For those families who need to stop working and need financial 

help, we are here for them. We have a designated application form on our website for families and for the social workers to complete and email to us, whereby we can act promptly by offering financial grants, which will support them with: 

- Transport to and from hospital 

- Household bills 

- Clothing 

- Food 

- Bedroom furniture for the child 

- Mortgage / rental payments 

Lots of the families we supported this year sadly lost their jobs either due to their child’s diagnosis, or covid related redundancies and cutbacks. 

We proudly supported 48 families this year with either a single grant, or with a regular monthly grant, whilst still continuing to support the previous years families. 

We also signposted many families towards other organisations in the hope of further financial support. 



## **Emotional Support** 

Mitchell’s Miracles offers emotional support to families experiencing the turmoil that can occur when faced with the news that their child has been diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. Taking care of a chronically ill child is one of the most challenging and difficult tasks a parent/carer could ever face. Parents/carers play a huge role in how a child copes. A calm, loving, reassuring, positive parent/carer will help their child cope with the treatment much better. Beyond managing physical challenges and medical essentials, you will have to deal with your child’s emotional needs and the impact that a continued illness can have on the entire family. As a sign of our commitment to assisting families in this regard, our emotional support worker is on hand to offer her expertise with not only emotional support but with bereavement counseling and signposting where needed. The support we offer, helps our families through the toughest times and assures them they are not alone. 

## **Welfare & benefit advice** 

Along with emotional support, we also provide welfare and benefit advice. This service entails working with the families to ensure they are aware of all the beneficial services they may be entitled to. The forms which have to be completed can be a long process. We are here to go through the claim forms with the parents to double-check they are wording them accurately and receiving the correct amount of benefit. We can assess the needs of each family individually, to their specific needs, and reinforce our support for further assistance, such as Personal Independent Payment, Employment & support allowance or mobility grants. We also provide information about individual grants and often apply on behalf of our families. Our emotional support worker provides her services on a part-time basis, however, she volunteers extra hours to be able to cater for all the families who turn to us for help. Since covid occurred three years ago, Mitchell’s Miracles Charity has assisted more families with signposting than any other support. This may be due to support workers at other charities not providing this service at all or any longer. We feel that this support we offer is sometimes just as helpful as funding.

## Cont.. 

Just by showing empathy towards our families and reassuring them they are not alone, and we are here for them, really eases their pain and suffering just a little more. 

## **Hickman Line Bags** 

Hickman line bags keep the Hickman-lines clean, safe and prevent them from wiggling around. The hickman line are two tubes attached to the child’s chest into the main artery, and its purpose is to take blood, give blood and provide chemotherapy, and many other medications. A hickman line prevents children from having to receive constant injections. 

We have an incredible volunteer, who has made a difference to the children we support, and made enough Hickman line bags to support over 100 children this year. She has pledged to continue this support every year for our charity. 


## **Backpack Appeal** 

A big part of the protocol for children receiving treatment for Neuroblastoma, is to receive immunotherapy. When a child receives immunotherapy, they need to be attached to a medical pump and stay in hospital for up to a week at a time, and over a course of six months. However, by having a small backpack, the immunotherapy bottle can be safely placed inside it allowing the child to go home as opposed to having to spend even more time in hospital. 

Great Ormond Hospital made contact with our charity and asked for our help in providing these much needed backpacks. We created an online appeal, and successfully raised enough money to provide them with over 100 backpacks. 



## **Easter appeal 2002** 

Every year Mitchell’s Miracles prepares for their Easter appeal. Chocolate eggs are a popular gift for children at Easter time, however most of the children we support cannot eat Easter eggs, as the chemotherapy treatment they are receiving may be making them feel very nauseous , or their tummies and mouth could have ulcers. To be handed an egg at Easter can be another added piece of sadness to these children. So, each year we set an Amazon Wishlist filled with Easter fun gifts for our supporters to purchase, which gets delivered straight to our office and then we evenly distribute the gifts between our supported children. 


## **Christmas appeal 2022** 

Christmas holidays can be a stressful and financially straining time of the year for most, but especially so, for our supported children who may be spending their Christmas Day in a hospital bed isolated from friends and family. Many of the families we have provided financial grants and emotional support to have not only endured the heartache of watching their child go through such intense treatment, but have had the added upset of their child missing out on the one special day of the year, being Christmas day. Due to the ongoing problems resulting from the covid-19 pandemic, we felt it was a risk to enter the cancer wards of GOSH hospital, so we decided to donate 78 Christmas gifts with Amazon gift cards totaling £1,858.60, The Les Ambassadeurs casino donated 60 M&S vouchers, and we received some wonderful gifts from our supporters. We then distributed this between all the children, and the, siblings to an Angel child we supported in 2022. We received some lovely messages of gratitude, expressing how much these gifts had brightened their Christmas day.

## **Highlights for the year.** 

This year was a positive year for Mitchell's Miracles Charity, despite the upheavals experienced globally over the last couple of years due to the pandemic. 

We had some great partnerships and support throughout the year, from businesses including, **Co-Op,** 

## **Tesco and ASDA** . 

In July, we received the news that a major Law Firm, ‘ **Mills & Reeve’** , agreed to into a charity partnership with us for 1 whole year. They donated and raised awareness of our cause throughout the year, and provided us voluntary help with our Christmas gift appeal, by wrapping up all the Christmas gifts for the children we supported in 2022. 

In December we were contacted by **The Les Ambassadeurs Casino** , to confirm that we were amongst one of their five chosen charities to raise donations for with their new fundraising initiative ‘Only Prizes’. This started off with a Christmas voucher for each of the children we supported with our Christmas gift appeal. 

**Romford Raiders** , who are a local ice hockey team, nominated us to sponsor for a year. This included their new ice hockey kit being branded in our charity colours and our logo. They raised lots of awareness within our community and amongst other teams all over the country of Neuroblastoma, and finished the year with a wonderful donation to support our cause. One of our great supporters, Mr Norman James, hosted his 5th annual charity golf day for Mitchell’s Miracles. Cont.. 

The annual global campaign, ‘ **Go Gold for childhood cancer in September** ’ is an annual campaign held throughout the month of September. Mitchell’s Miracles supported this campaign by offering our specially designed go gold merchandise, which was a great success.

In November our 2nd annual fireworks display **‘Mitchell’s Magnificent Fireworks** ’ was supported by an amazing 900 attendees. This created great awareness for our cause in the community. 

Due to the knock on effects from covid-19, fundraisers were reluctant to fundraise. But, the fundraisers that were successful in fundraising for our cause, included school pupils in our community, who did cake bake sales, and also a sponsored head shave. We were also supported by the biggest decorated Christmas house in Romford Essex, which was supported and match funded by the Gallagher-Re foundation.

I report on the accounts for the year ended 31 December 2022 set out on pages nine to thirteen. 

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner** 

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this period 

(under Section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act)) and that an independent examination is required. 

It is my responsibility to: 

- examine the accounts under Section 145 of the 2011 Act 

- to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under Section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act); and 

- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. 

## **Basis of the independent examiner's report** 

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review 

of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures 

undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view ' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statements below. 

## **Independent examiner's statement** 

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: 

- (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements 

- to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 130 of the 2011 Act; and 

- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act have not been met; or 

(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **Accounting convention** 

The financial statements have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis. 

## **Taxation** 

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities. 

## **Fund accounting** 

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees. Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
