It is not the intention of the trustees of the charity to appoint any new trustees. Should the situation change in the future, the trustees will apply suitable recruitment induction and training procedures. All funds are raised by the trustees. ## **Objects for Public Benefit** The objects are to advance and promote and provide facilities for the practice of the Jewish Religion in accordance with Orthodox Jewish tenets. The trustees have considered the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit. ## **Review of Activities and Achievements** The trustees are satisfied with results for the year. We are thrilled and touched by your commitment to a vibrant Jewish life in Birmingham! ## You Brought Shabbat Back to Chabad – a Students Home Away From Home! First In-Person Events! **You provided 1,000’s of shabbat packages over lockdown, so that students could celebrate shabbat in their flats.** As soon as it was possible the students were excited to gather again for shabbat dinners. Thanks to you – a few shabbat dinners were held before the summer break and some students even joined over the summer. Because of your support, every Jewish student in Birmingham has a place to call home and somewhere to have a beautiful shabbat dinner together with friends. _“The atmosphere is amazing! Everyone is just so excited to be able to see each other and celebrate Shabbat together again! Thank you to the donors of Chabad who make this happen!” Leah._ ## You Gave Freshers a Place to Go For the First Friday Night of Term! You provided a home for 130 freshers on the first week of term. Steaming hot chicken soup, kneidels, homemade challah and lots of faces! Thank you! The freshers know that you care and that their connection their people matters to you! Thank you! ## Rosh Hashana – You Kept Leon Connected with the Sound of the Shofar! With Yom tov being midweek this year, not everyone was able to take off work to come to shul. You made sure that students, young professionals and community members were able to hear the shofar and be reminded of its message at a beautiful Rosh Hashana service and dinner in the evening after work. _“I have just started a new job and I was sadly not able to make it to shul on Rosh Hashana. I felt disconnected and sad. Rosh Hashana is an important day for me._ _Thanks to you I was able to go to a shofar service after work at Chabad. It meant a lot to me to have marked this special day and to be connected to my people. I also enjoyed a delicious yom tov meal and made new friends. Thanks for supporting Chabad and caring about me! Leon._ ## Yom Kippur – You Made Sure Lauren Ate a Hot, Nutritious Meal Before the Fast! Homesickness turns up when its least expected. Erev yom Kippur is a day to eat but what do you do when you have just arrived for your year of university and you feel lonely and your cooking skills aren’t that good yet? Thanks to you Lauren was able to eat a delicious hot filling meal before the fast and she went into the new year and this auspicious day knowing that you care about her! Remove from oven. Cool for 5 mins and then cut into squares. Thanks to you, we have transitioned from covid remote events to in-person hosting. Thank you for being there for the students and keeping students connected to the Jewish community 24/7. With your help the Chabad House is buzzing with people again! The Friday night dinners are bustling, the classes are full, (and the chicken soup requests are non-stop 😉). We could not do any of it without your support. You have hosted 100’s of students over the Chagim and welcomed them to Birmingham with your kindness. You have shown them how they can be a proud Jew in University. The students are experiencing for the first time (since covid) the power of your love and care for them. They are so excited to be back. Some of them have never seen it before and didn’t believe it was possible. Millie, a second year student this Friday night thanked us with tears in her eyes. She said her brother, an alum of Birmingham, told her many times about shabbat at Chabad. Because of Covid she didn’t believe him. “Now I understand what he meant! How Special are Friday nights at Chabad, You have no idea how much this means to me as a student to have a place to go and celebrate Shabbat!” Through Covid and beyond- you pulled us through some tough times. I have discovered that I can keep Shabbat and have continued to do so weekly. ## **CHANUKAH IN A BOX YOU INSPIRED JEWISH PRIDE!** “My Chanukah was enriched with the Chabad Chanukah box kindly funded by some amazing sponsors. "The Chabad family gave me chocolate coins, doughnuts and dreidels so I could celebrate and show my non-Jewish flatmates how we celebrate Chanukah. They were much more interested than I expected and they asked me loads of questions. ## **YOU BROUGHT THE STUDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER FOR A WONDERFUL CHALLAH BAKE** Over 100 students and community members came together for a beautiful Challah bake in Central shul. Many people enjoyed baking challah and learning about this mitzvah. ## **FROM THE KITCHEN AT CHABAD** - Taste the warmth you give to others - Carrot kugel - a very sweet versatile recipe (We serve as a side dish for the main course with meat or chicken, but some may serve as a cake :)) 4 large carrots ½ cup sugar 1 cup flour ½ cup oil ½ cup dark brown sugar 2 eggs 1 ½ tsp baking powder 1 tsp vanilla Boil the carrots until soft. Drain and mash/ blend. Mix in the rest of the ingredients and beat well. Bake at 350° for 45 mins or until the toothpick comes out clean in a 9x9 inch pan. Enjoy! Rowan met Rabbi Yossi on campus a few days before Pesach and was given some hand-baked matzah and gratefully accepted the invitation to join an authentic seder. Throughout the whole seder he was excited and engaged, sharing his own ideas, insights and memories of Pesach. Thank you for reigniting his Jewish spark and helping him feel connected to his Jewish identity.
