The trustees present their annual report for the year ended 31 May 2020 and confirm it complies with the Charities Act 1993, as amended by the Charities Act 2006, the Trust Deed and the Charities SORP 2005.

## **Governing Document** 

WellWishers is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered with the Charity Commission on 16 May 2013 under charity number 1152057. It is governed by a deed of trust last updated on 15 May 2013. 

## **Organisational Structure and Management** 

The charity trustees are responsible for the general control and management of the charity. The trustees give their time freely and receive no remuneration or other financial benefits. 

The trustees meet together as a body on a relatively regular basis, where possible, and are responsible for all decisions taken in relation to running the charity and its activities. The trustees are assigned tasks during these meetings and there is regular communication during the intervening periods, through the use of messaging and task management tools, to ensure tasks are completed in a timely fashion.

## **Objectives and Activities** 

## **Aims** 

To advance the Islamic faith for the benefit of the public through, but not limited to, the following means: 

- the provision of sacred space for worship and holding prayer services and lectures 

- contributing to the spiritual and moral education of children and adults 

## **Strategies and Activities** 

To achieve its aims, the charity: 

- regularly holds events in relation to issues that need addressing 

- offers a graphical approach using interactive tools and visual aids to ease learning and understanding 

- provides resources, tools and downloads 

- contributes towards a better society by promoting social cohesion 

- works towards providing relief to the poorest and most vulnerable 

## **How the Activities deliver Public Bene�it** 

The charity carries out a wide range of activities in pursuance of its charitable aims and objectives. The trustees consider that these activities, summarised below, contribute to the spiritual and moral education of the Muslims who have participated in the activities, whether directly or indirectly. 

## **Online Activity** 

The Internet is the greatest exposure the charity has to the wider world. Two of the trustees ‐ who have a background in IT ‐ continue to maintain the charity’s websites¹ that are being accessed and benefitted from on a daily basis. 

**Website** The wellwishers.org.uk website, maintained by the trustees, continues to be used as a hub and repos‐ itory for all the activities carried out by the charity. The website continues to be visited by thousands of users from across the globe. The following resources were made available on the website during the year:‐ 

1. _Tarāweeh² Nightly Prayer Allocation_ : In normal years, the Tarāweeh prayer would be performed in the Mosque, but due to a national lockdown Muslims were compelled to perform the prayer at home. This short booklet was aimed at aiding the reciter in being able to complete the full recital of the _Qur’ān_ in a manner that would be appropriate and not impact on its meaning in relation to the verse at which the reciter starts and stops their recitation in each unit of prayer 

2. An Eid prayer sermon: With the lockdown in force, it was felt appropriate that a concise sermon on the occasion of Eid be prepared to allow families to conduct the prayer in their own homes and gardens without feeling the need to rely on someone well‐versed in Arabic 

**Tools** Users of the website continued to benefit from existing tools 

**Support** Trustees provided support to, and responded to queries of, users who contacted the charity via the contact form on the website

**Driving Traffic** The charity continued to benefit from its enrolment in the _Google Ad Grants_ programme to engage the wider public through online advertising with _AdWords_ , allowing the charity to:‐ 

1. promote the website on _Google_ with _AdWords_ advertising free of charge 

2. raise awareness by choosing relevant keywords and creating unique ads (targeting mainly the _Zakāh_ calculator and Zakāh Nisāb and _Mahr_ prices, and the Quranic.info website) to highlight its work 

3. track its campaigns via _Google Analytics_ to see what was effective and what was not quite work‐ ing, and make amendments accordingly 

## **Events** 

With the country in a lockdown, due to COVID‐19, it was not possible to arrange any events at Mosques. The intention in the future is to conduct presentations online to overcome this limitation. 

## **Expenditure** 

One of the purposes of the charity is to cater for the poor and needy, in conjunction with fulfilling the obligation of _Zakāh_ for Muslims. Three key types of donations were made that needed to be spent within the year of receipt: _Sadaqah Wājibah_ , _Zakāh_ and _Sadaqah Nāfilah_ ³. 

In addition to this, donations were spent towards projects that the charity deemed worthy, as detailed below. 

**Sadaqah Wājibah** This is compulsory charity designated solely for the poor and needy. £17 was donated and spent. 

**Zakāh** Zakāh is one of the key requirements that every Muslim must discharge, provided they meet its conditions. A total of £18,056.40 was spent towards projects around the world with the donations received. The beneficiaries were as follows:‐ 

1. £4,050 towards 135 food packs in Bangladesh given to the poor fasting during Ramadhān 

2. £8,000 towards 800 Eid packs in India 

3. £2,506.40 towards the poor in India 

4. £1,750 towards the poor in Yemen 

5. £1,750 towards the poor in Syria 

**Water Well** £1,200 was spent in constructing a water well in Sierra Leone. **Eidgah** £158 was donated towards the Eidgah in Bolton. 

**Admin Costs** £600 from the gift aid accumulated was spent on the Ramadhān and Eid food pack project costs, and £120 to cover accountancy fees. 

- **Interest** £5.18 in interest money (which came from HMRC gift aid) was given away. 

## **Accountability and Administration** 

The charity was set up to benefit the wider public and, as such, the trustees hold a strict view with regards expenditure of any donated funds to ensure they are spent on the right causes and that no unnecessary spending occurs. Some of the ways the trustees have managed this, and accountability in general, are discussed hereunder. 

**Monthly Meetings** The trustees try to hold regular meetings in which past, present and oncoming tasks are dis‐ cussed, as well as any new developments. Trustees are encouraged to come up with innova‐

tive ways to benefit the wider public. Suggestions of what to include in the Agenda of each meeting are solicited prior to the meetings and minutes recorded of discussions made during them. Adhoc meetings are held when necessary. 

- **Expenses** All running costs of the charity, such as development and hosting of the website, holding events and travel costs, and purchasing items and equipment, are managed by the trustees out of their own pockets; no expenses are claimed. 

- **100% Donation Policy** The charity adheres to a strict 100% donation policy. To achieve this, money from gift aid is spent towards project costs in order to ensure all the charity money is spent on the campaigns for which it is solicited without a penny being deducted, even for administrating projects. 

- **Dual Signatures** Anypaymentsthataremade fromthe bankaccountrequireadual signature(fromtwotrustees) to ensure there is verification of any expenditure and to avoid any irregularities. 

- **Task Management** To effectively manage the running of the charity, the trustees make use of a task management tool. Use of this tool has allowed the trustees to keep on top of the activities and ensure delegated tasks are completed in a timely fashion. There is also a record of all historical tasks for audit purposes and to ensure they can be reviewed retrospectively and for the purpose of reporting. 

## **Plans for Future Periods** 

The following are some of the plans that the trustees have discussed for the future: 

1. add another tool, such as an inheritance calculator or a taraweeh allocator, to the website for the benefit of the wider public 

2. start delivering presentations online to benefit more people and overcome lockdown restrictions 

3. invest in better server provision for the websites and consider having an online donation campaign targeting this to solicit funds 

4. consider running a local or national campaign that would provide benefit to the public, and collect funds to realise it. The following ideas have been considered thus far: 

   - a) Locate an underdeveloped country, form an alliance with local charities on the ground and start a cam‐ paign to collect donations for causes there 

   - b) Donate to a local cause, e.g. the local hospice 

5. continue to look for a property in which prayer services and lectures, as well as the education of both children and adults, can take place

## **Statement of Trustees’ Responsibilities** 

The charity trustees are responsible for preparing an annual report and financial statements in accordance with ap‐ plicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). 

The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the charity trustees to prepare financial statements for each year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that period. In preparing the financial statements, the trustees are required to: 

1. select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; 

2. observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP; 

3. make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; 

4. state whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures dis‐ closed and explained in the financial statements; 

5. prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business. 

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 1993, the Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. 

The trustees for the purposes of charity law who served during the year and up to the date of this report are set out on page 3.

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the CIO for the period ended 31 May 2020 

## **Responsibilities and basis of report** 

As the charity trustees of the CIO you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’). 

I report in respect of my examination of the CIO’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

## **Basis of preparation** 

## **1** _**Basis of accounting**_ 

The accounts have been prepared on the accruals basis, under the historical cost convention, and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard 102, and Charity SORP FRS 102 (Statement of Recommended Practice for Accounting and Reporting by Charities) , (The SORP) published by the Charity Commission in England & Wales (CCEW), effective January 2019, and in accordance with all applicable law. 

The charity is a public benefit entity. 

## **2 Accounting Policies** 

## _**Income**_ 

Income from charitable activities and voluntary donations are included in full in the Statement of Financial Activities when received. The value of services provided by volunteers has not been included. 

## _**Expenditure**_ 

Expenditure is included in the accounts on an accruals basis. 

## _**Unrestricted funds**_ 

Unrestricted funds are donations and other incoming resources receivable or generated for the charity without further specified purpose and are available as general funds. 

## _**Restricted funds**_ 

Restricted funds are funds subject to specific trusts, which may be declared by the donor(s) or with their authority (eg in a public appeal) or created through legal process, but still within the wider objects of the charity. Restricted funds may be restricted income funds, which are spent at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of some particular aspect(s) of the objects of the charity, or they may be endowment funds, where the assets are required to be invested, or retained for actual use, rather than spent.
