Care is provided to hedqehogs in accommodation at the Trusys Principal Address by the Tfusys founder and Chair, Carole Catchpole, together with a group of volunteers. The Trust would be unable to operat• without the support and help provFded by the dedicated group of volunteers who asslst wlth the deanlng out of hutches, fundralslng and rnany other duties as requlred. Foster care Is also provided by volunteers who care for orphaned or recovefing hedgehogs within their own carefully vetted properties. Some provide safe 83rdens and proterted area5 for hedgehtrd5 that cannot be introduced back into the wild. The Trust has been in existence since 2013, tsking over the previous activitles. assets and liabilities of Northumbrian Hedgehog Rescue. Since its inception, the Trust has continued to develop into an èssents'al element irt the welfare provision for hedgehogs within Northumberland, Tyneside, Wearside and County Durham. During this reporting period the Trust has administered care to 866 hedgehc£s totsl. The number of ho85 taken Into care is always higher in the summer months when hedgehogs are most aetlve- the summer and autumn of 2022 was no exception with manv hedgehogs iemaining in care over the winter period as continuation of their medical treatment was required. Thi5 prepared many for release into the wild in spring 2023. Volunteers attend the Rescue Centre on a daily basis and throughoutthe year. Approximatdy 38 volunteers supported the work of the Trust, in addition. fosterers provided an essential elernent in provldlng addittonal tare throughout the year.
The work carried out by the Trust remain5 funded entbrety by donatlons from the public. Funds are also raiseil by way of collection tins, raffles, other fundraising events and the sale of a small amount of merchandise promotin8 hedgehogs. Prior to 2021 a reserve5 fi8ure of up to £40,(KX) had been considered adequate. In 2022 this was increased to £75,ry>). As at 31 March 2023 the total funds amounted to £128,035 wlth the reserves held at the same level of £75.rth and th• unrestrirted balance being £53,035. A8ain, this figure is deemed sufficient to Meet approximatety kn¥ears of expenses atthe level incurred to the ended 31 MaTch 2023. The Trustees are mindful of the coming increases to electric and heating costs, though at this point do not wish to restrirt fvrther funds.
