History ofAuto Italia Auto Italia was established in 2007 by a community of artists who were living, working and progi'ainming exhibitions from a squatted car gai'age in Peckham, South London. From the begitming there was an intei'est in exploring what it meant to work togethei., with a vision to investigate expei'iinental foi-lns of community practice with artists and audiences.During ils fii'st len yeai's, the gallery operated from a sei'ies of donated buildings across the city - including large-scale wai'ehouses, industrial buildings and commercial units using the sites to pi'oduce majoi. commissions with a genei'ation of eai'ly-career artists, activists and researchei's who hav¢ gone onto become liousehold names in ait and academia.Develop¢d against the backdrop of government austerity, tliis programming foregi'ounded innovative new research on digital culture, group work, s¢lf-organisation and community activism. Its early collaborators included rnulti-award winning artists and r¢s¢archers Ed Atkins, Fi'anco 'Bifo' Berardi, Hannah Black, Frederico Campagiia, Benedict Drew, Mai'k Fisher, Huw Leirnney, Yui'i Pattison, Eddie Peake, Heather Phillipsoii, and others. Working in a dynamic international ecology of artists and oi'ganisations, the gallery has grown into an essential risk-taking platform, with an international track recoi'd foregrounding aitists, woi'k that is deeply political in coiitent and form. This pi'ograinming has secui'ed recognition as a bellwether for influential ti'ends and ideas in ¢ontempoi'ary art, aiid in fostering the eai'ly expansion and diss¢mination of radical ideas before they enter mainsts'eain institutions. Ov¢i' the last six yeai's, this has focused on producing major commissions by early-cai'eer artists exploring dissenting f01Th5 of subjectivity, and surveys by mid-cai'eei. artists whose arcliives trace key conflicts in culthre and society. This has included ritically acclaimed projects with intei'genei'ational aitists of diverse geogi?phies and subjectivities including CFGNY, Elysia Ci'ampton Chuquiinia, Nolan Oswald Dennis, Gi'an Fury, April Greinian, Invernomulo, Sin Wai Kin, Tarek Lal(rissi. In this pi'esentation, the artists employed narrative and staging strategies adopted from commedia dell'arte - a foiin of Italian public theatre popular aci'oss Europe betweeii the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries to considei. how experiences of powei-, authority and agency are nairated thi'ough roleplaying and stoiy-making. Biraddali Dancing on the Horizon (30 ininutes, 16mm, 2024) documents a process of ancesh'al, ijitergeneralional learning. Its stai'ling point is a jouiiiey taken by Ra with her teacher and collaborator Sitti Aii'ia Sangkula Askalani-obeso. A Tausug elder, Obeso is a cultural bearer of the pangalay, a pre-Islami¢ dance of the Tausug people of the Sulu Archipelago and the eastern coast Bajau of Saba in the Philippines. Biraddali Dancing on th¢ Horizon was co-commissioned by Auto Italia aiid Westeim Fi'ont. Vancouver. With time, the nan'ative becomes subverted by its own mythology and slips into fable as they encounter a celestial beiiig known as the Biraddali, poikn'ayed by Ra as a beautiful trans, non-human figui'e and the originatoi. of the dance. The filrn seeks to mei'ge precolonial undei'slandings of gender identity with Tausug genealogies." Ivana Cholakova, Frieze 2.
