under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carying out my examination, I

The objective of Middlesbrough Foodbank is the prevention or relief of poverty to people in need in Middlesbrough and the surrounding areas.

Middlesbrough Foodbank provides three days of nutritionally balanced emergency food to people in crisis. Vouchers are issued via frontline professionals, including doctors, health visitors, social workers, Citizens Advice Bureau staff, welfare officers, the police and probation officers. Vouchers can then be exchanged for food at various distribution centres across Middlesbrough. 

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)** 

The trustees have regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit. In particular, we are seeking to ensure that our vouchers are available via a suitable range of organisations and that we provide a network of food distribution centres across Middlesbrough so that our services are accessible to the people in need.

Middlesbrough Foodbank relies on the work done by volunteers who help at the warehouse, at distribution points, and during special supermarket collection days. These volunteers are generally members of a variety of churches across Middlesbrough, and we are grateful for the support of the volunteers and our partner churches.

Middlesbrough Foodbank complies with the code of practice for ethical fundraising issued by the Fundraising Regulator. We do not use the services of professional fundraisers.

## Section D                      Achievements and performance 

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** 

Middlesbrough Foodbank was set up in 2012, and became a registered charity on 17[th] April 2013. In the year from April 2021 to March 2022, we fed 8649 people, including 5198 adults and 3451 children, a reduction on the previous year, back to pre-pandemic levels. We have active voucher holders in around 100 organisations. This year, more agencies reopened. The main issuers were Breckon Hill community centre. The Salvation Army, New Walk, Middlesbrough Probation Service and Nite Light CIC. All food given out is donated by local people or purchased using monetary donations. In the year from April 2021 to March 2022, 80 tonnes of food were distributed (a decrease from 118 tonnes the previous year). We are continuing to need to purchase a far higher proportion of food that before the pandemic, rather than relying on food donations. We have a network of food distribution centres across the town This year, the centre at Trinity Methodist Church, Whinney Banks closed, but we opened a new centre at Church of Ascension, Berwick Hills. We continue to ensure we have a centre open on each weekday:  St Barnabas Church, Linthorpe (Mondays)  Grove Hill Methodist Church (Tuesdays)  Coulby Newham Baptist Church (Wednesdays)  Church of Ascension, Berwick Hills (Wednesday)  Middlesbrough Community Church, Gresham (Thursdays)  Holy Trinity Church, North Ormesby (Fridays) We also aim to open another new centre at St Thomas More, Beechwood. We opened our distribution centres more fully again, welcoming people into a more hospitable environment, with a chance for people to chat and be signposted to other relevant support organisations. However further restrictions were imposed for some time in the light of the Omicron variant. We were offered a unit in the Hill Street Shopping centre rent-free, which we used temporarily for storage of additional stock. We have since surrendered that unit as we became liable for business rates on it. However we hope to move our main depot to new premises nearer to Middlesbrough Centre where there might be more scope for welcoming clients to the centre, for advice sessions, etc. In line with the objectives stated last year, we worked with the Salvation Army to introduce a debt advice service that we can refer Foodbank clients to, when appropriate. In December 2021 our project manager Alan Jones moved into a role in this debt advice service, and we employed Tracey Godfrey as our new project manager. A team of around eighty volunteers work at the warehouse and distribution centres, as well as helping out at food collections. We are very grateful for all they have done.

- relevant about: one company make regular donations by standing order, totalling 

- the charity’s principal £21,414. £47,843 was donated via our web page and £2490 was sources of funds (including collected at Middlesbrough Football Club matches. Many other people any fundraising); and organisations have made one-off donations. We are grateful to all
