South House Silver Workshop Trust
Chairman’s Report
January 2024
Period Jan 2023 to Jan 2024
The year 2023 has probably been the most successful year for the Trust.
The Trustees selected three scholars in late 2022 from the 15 applications that were received. They were Dr Karen Westland, Alice fry and Sheng Zhang.
In January 2023 Karen Westland started work in Shetland with Rod Kelly for two months intensive silversmithing training. Alice Fry worked with Chris Perry in Sheffield and Sheng Zhang started work in the studio of Brett Payne also in Sheffield. All three scholars made new pieces in silver under the close supervision of the master silversmiths, the silver was kindly loaned by Argex Ltd.
All three were taught new skills in an intensive situation as well as receiving advice on exhibiting, marketing, design and accounting skills. For the second period Alice Fry and Sheng Zhang travelled to Shetland and Karen Westland started working with Brett Payne in Sheffield. All accommodation costs were covered along with their travel and each scholar received a subsistence allowance.
The three scholars produced beautiful pieces with their increased skills and all three applied and were accepted to exhibit at the highly prestigious exhibition in London, Goldsmiths’ Fair.
They also exhibited their work at Goldsmiths’ North in Sheffield and Elements in Edinburgh.
All of our major donors again funded the programme and we raised over £45k to fund the full scheme.
We continue to pass on to the next generation of silversmiths the techniques that have been honed over 40 years by myself Brett and Chris we are preserving the craft skills for the future. Together Rod Kelly, Brett Payne and Chris Perry have over 110 years of experience between them.
We have a very bright future and we look forward as a Trust to working with the many young talented silversmiths that are working and studying in the UK.
As a further update, all three scholars mentioned above have now completed their studies and the Trust has advertised the scheme and again received a very strong number of applicants. Two main scholars have been accepted for four months of individual training and a further three silversmiths will complete one month workshops during 2024 rolling over into 2025.
