Achievements and performance
Summary of the main

durlng the y•ar
Actlvbties Aprll 2022 to March 2023
Admlnlstratlon & Communlcatlons
The trustees met approximately every two months durlng the year. During
the year truslees agreed a process for assessing risk for events, and for
the finan¢ing of evenls and activities organi$ed on behaff of the Trustees
by the'virtual Village Hall. cammittee.
Communication to members and the wider Gommunlty has been via our
Wgbsite, emails to Members from the MCA 8e¢retary, and through
Matterdale Nextdoor.
Communlty Hall
Two MCA truslee8, Jane N8WPOrt and Veronica Gore, have continued to
participale as advisors in the work of the Steering Group é8tablished by
Matterdale School Foundation {MSF) to establish a community hall for
Matterdale Two further MCA tnjstees, Emma Bray and Davld's Harrison,
are members of this steering group in their capacity as MSF trustees.
Since it became clear that the original plans for a hall vMr8 too costly, tha
steering group has been considering other options. Although no decision
has been made about a possible reduced design. other options have been
pursued.
A pilot project was set up to see if loint event8, held at Watemiillock Village
Hall, but organised jointly by MCA and Watemiillock Village Hall
Gommittee, would attra¢t people from both areas. The report of the pilot
indicated that the joint evenls were enjoyed and were well attended by
some members of both Communit
areas. MCA considered that Ihe

was suffidently successful to contact WatermilloGk Village Hall commrttee
to suggest further discussion of fvture joint working.
The Parochial Church Counul has decided to make some charKJes to the
Church and Chur¢h meeting room to facilitate a wider range of commursity
activrties. MCA hopes that once these changes are made we will be able
to work more close5y with the PCC to put on more community events at
Matterdale Church.
Communty Events
The planning and organization of events is undertaken by the Ifirtual
Village Hall committee IWHI, a subcommittee of MCA comprised of
members of MCA and trustees. In the absence of a de81gnated community
hall for Matterdale, events have taken place In the local pub, the Church,
the Church meeting room, individuals private homes and a locally owned
bam. This year, the WH has also run events at Watermillock Village Hall.
The VVH organlzes a number of regular 8vents.' a weekly outdoor fitnes$
group, a bi-monthly quiz", a monthly film c]ub. The two Steel Band group8
meel weekly.
The Nature Watch group, tog81her with another local charity (the Friends
of Ullswater Way). initiated the organttation of a habitat survey in
Matterdale. Volunteers have been trained, and a number of srtes have
been surveyed over the year. They also initiated, wrth the support of
Matterdale Parish CounrAI, a "low mow. regime for Dockray Village Green
for 2022.
There have been several collgborative evènts with the Matterdale Church.
A well-altended Easter Day event was arranged after the Easter 8eNice.
This included an easter egg hunt, a cupcake competition and
refreshments. At the Carol SeNic8 in December. refreshments were
provided by the Ukrainian guests who arè being hosted in th8 valley.
Unfortunately, the Icy weather made it impo55ible for the steel pans to b8
moved to the Church, and the band was therefore not able to playthe large
repertoire of carol8 and other calypso tunes it had rehearsed.
The Royal Hotel was used as a venue for a successful and enjoyable event
to celebrat6 the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. This Sncluded Ghildren's races,
a family dog show, a perfomiancé by the sleel band, folk music and
ceilidh. MCA was successful in gaining funding for a marquee for the event
and for a commemorative bench for Ihe DoGkray Village Green.
The Royal Hotel yvas also the venue for a successful folk night showGasin9
Cumbrian talent.
The photography group continued to send in photos and another
su¢ce6sful calendar was produced for 2023.
Two walks were organised to raise money and awareness of an appeal for
a new publiG bench off the lane above Matterdale End which became
known as °Pete's Bench"
in August and on New Year's Day.
Refreshments were provided on both occasions.
The bench was
SUCC8ssfully installed in November 2022.

The group organizin9 Ihe pilot of jOTnt working between MCA and WMVH
(Watermillock Village Hall) put on several su&￿sSfUl events vrith the
support of both organEations. These included a Pop-up cafe which was
a fundraiser for Ukraine., a Ha￿est supper and Hop in the aukumn,
featunng music and line danang: a Christmas Fair took place in late
Novembér and attracted a wide range of local stall holder8 and many
visitors. A Bums Night was also arranged wrth a piper, speeches, and a
ilidh. All these events V￿re very enjoyable, v￿e organized and run by
membefs of both organizatsons, and were attended by a range of residents
from both communrties. A weekly badminton evening was organized at
Watermil]ock Village Hall dunng the autumn and spring terms.
A 'Big Qui£ organized by Rev Cathy Helm, w88 held at Watemiillock
Village Hall with support from both WMVH and MCA
Reports on the pilot hav8 tten written by the organtzing group indicating
that the pilot had been a s￿nIficant success. The reports will now be
consKlered by both MCA and MSF.
MCA has supported otsr organizations by advertising their events, for
example, Friend of Ullswater Way, the Matterdale Breakfast meeting, and
Watemillock Village Hall. We hav8 also raised funds for Ukraine through
the Disasters Emergenw Committee and supported a collection for the
local Food Bank.
Actlvftlos Aprll to August 2023
Trustees met member8 of Waterniillock Village Hall committee to
discuss drfferent ways ofjoint workln9. The discussions were incondusive,
but MCA hopes a way will be found in the future to conbnue joint workin9.
Communlty Ev•nts
Several c<Mnmunty 8vents were organized during thi8 time penod.
MCA worked wtth the PCC to support a Palm Sunday procession and to
provide refreshments followng the Palm Sunday Service
