Grapevine Essex is committed to providing an excellent and professional service to adults with learning disabilities; comprising affordable, confidence building and educational opportunities that teach life skills, support independent living and improve employability. The supported outings and activities provided ensure valuable respite to parents and carers, in addition to raising acceptance and awareness of adults with learning difficulties within the general public. Most of all, we are dedicated to ensuring our members have fun, develop friendships and enhance their lives within a safe, supportive and friendly environment. 4 ## Structure and Governance Grapevine Essex was founded in January 2012 and achieved charity status in March 2013. Our governing document is the CIO Constitution, which was also agreed in 2013 and is reviewed on a regular basis. otherwise be accessible to them. Each year, we deliver more than 40 outings and events across the Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays. These include visits to historical venues, theme parks, theatres, outdoor activity centres, wildlife parks and residential mini‑breaks. Our programme is designed to broaden horizons, encourage independence and create lasting memories. In accordance with Charity Commission regulations, we have an elected Board of Trustees, who are responsible for the governance of the group. Charity trustees are elected on the basis of the relevant skills and attributes they possess that enable them to perform important functions within the charity. Belonging to Grapevine Essex has a significant positive impact on our members’ quality of life. They enjoy a balance of exciting new experiences and familiar, comforting activities. Most importantly, they build friendships, develop social skills and become part of what many proudly call the Grapevine Family — a supportive community that plays an important role in their everyday lives. Adrian Heighes supports members on day trips and residentials. He holds the following qualifications: QCF/NVQ Level Two: Health & Social Care; NVQ Level Three: Employment Law; Understanding Autism, Fire Safety, Health & Safety, Nutrition & Wellbeing, Infection Control & Prevention, Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults; Dementia Awareness, Makaton, The Autism Act 2009, Manual Handling; First Aid at Work and is qualified to administer Buccal Midazolam. Jackie’s role as Chair of the Board of Trustees and Charity Manager includes planning and organising all the activities and events for members, managing the accounts and overseeing the general running of the charity. Jackie holds qualifications in Emergency First Aid at Work; Risk Assessment, and Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults. Jackie manages the charity from her home in St Osyth. Simon Jones is a qualified SEN teacher and actively works teaching adults with alternative needs across a broad spectrum at a local Essex College. He holds the following qualifications, DETS / LV5 (teaching diploma), HND in Early Childhood studies and BTEC Level 3 Social Care. Simon is an experienced behaviour support manager, personal assistant, classroom assistant manager and qualified teacher. Vanessa’s role as Member Support Manager involves organising the support for members and supervising the volunteer team. She also runs our two weekly clubs during term times: Club Grapevine and the Dance Group. Vanessa holds qualifications in First Aid at Work; Risk Assessment; Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults; Epilepsy Awareness; Autism Awareness and is qualified to administer Buccal Midazolam. All members of the Grapevine Team have Enhanced Disclosure and Barring (DBS) clearance and are invited to attend training in Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Emergency First Aid at Work. Mary Schultz works alongside Vanessa in providing support for members and also organises the Art and Craft Workshops. Mary 6 ## Chair’s Annual Review Loneliness is one of the greatest challenges of our time—and one of the most painful. Even in a world that feels constantly connected, a basic lack of community leaves so many people feeling unseen, unheard, and alone. For people living with disabilities, those barriers can feel even harder to break down. At Grapevine Essex, we see the difference that belonging makes every single day. When Grapevine began, it started with a simple belief: everyone deserves a place where they are welcomed exactly as they are. What has grown from that belief is something truly special. Grapevine is more than a programme of activities—it is a community, and for many people, a turning point. It is a place where friendships form, confidence grows, and people discover that they are not alone. 2025 was another extraordinary year for us. More than 40 day trips, including three residential experiences, gave our members the chance to enjoy moments of freedom, adventure, and friendship. From the excitement of a February half‑term break at Butlins, to spring sunshine at Darsham Country Centre in Suffolk—with visits to Jimmy’s Farm, the Landgard Fort and some very enjoyable meals out, we created memories that will last far beyond the trips themselves. Our summer residential at the Wilderness Centre in Gloucestershire was an amazing experience. Whether kayaking on the River Wye, trying rifle shooting for the first time, or simply sitting together at the end of the day round a camp fire, these experiences helped members grow in confidence and independence. Time and again, we saw people surprise themselves—by trying something new, by believing in their abilities, and by realising what becomes possible when you feel supported and safe. None of this happens by chance. At Grapevine, we are passionate about what we do and about putting our members first. The dedication of our staff and volunteers ensures that Grapevine continues to be a place where people are seen, valued, and celebrated. Together, we are not just changing days—we are changing lives. ## **Jackie Holland Chair & Charity Manager** 7 ## President’s Report Due to unforeseen circumstances I was unable to be with our Grapevine friends for any of the well organised events which our Chair, Jackie and her Committee, arranged over the past year. However, I certainly will endeavour to be with you all sometime during the coming months. As usual Jackie our Chairman and her Committee have yet again arranged a very good Summer programme of events and I hope many of you will take part in some of them, thus encouraging the organisers, who work very hard to help all of you enjoy the forthcoming vacation. Looking at the proposed programme of events I feel sure those taking part will have a very enjoyable time. Please support as many as possible but most of all enjoy yourselves. Let us hope good weather prevails during the Summer. Over the past year, we’ve enjoyed visits from some fantastic guests, including Skittleman, Reptile Encounters, and Zest Dancers. Activities such as bowling and disco remain firm favourites, and our trips to City Bowl are always a highlight. A big thank you to their staff for being so friendly and accommodating. gratitude to all the wonderful people who help make our club such a welcoming, fun, and supportive community. To our fantastic volunteers and staff—Jane, Sarah, Grace, Emma, Mary, and Simon, Elizabeth, Lin —thank you for your time, energy, and dedication. Your ongoing support makes everything we do possible. If you have any ideas for new activities, please don’t hesitate to share them—we are always open to suggestions. This year, we have continued two very special traditions in memory of muchloved members of our community, The Colin Gooday Kindness Award, named in honour of Colin’s warmth and generosity, was awarded to **Grace Wiley** —a truly deserving recipient and The Ian Roberts Arts and Crafts Award, celebrating Ian’s love of creativity, was presented to **Sarah Jennings** for her wonderful contributions. A special thank you goes to Mary for organising and preparing our arts and crafts evenings, and to Eileen, Pete, and Cathy for their invaluable help during these sessions. These evenings are always filled with creativity and laughter thanks to your efforts. We’d also like to give a big thank you to Tom for hosting our quiz nights and creating fun and challenging questions each time. And, of course, thank you to DJ Jo Jo, Jan, and Denis for keeping the dance floor alive at our discos. To all the carers who bring our members to the club and support us in so many ways—thank you. Thank you all for being such an important part of our journey. ## **Vanessa Hellier, Club Grapevine Manager** 9 ## Dance Group Mondays 7:00pm-8:00pm, term time only The Boswells School, Burnham Road, Chelmsford CM1 6LY Contact: Vanessa Hellier - Vanessa@grapevineessex.org.uk / 07976 578868 Grapevine Dance has had another fantastic year, providing members with the opportunity to enjoy dance, build confidence, and perform in front of the community. The group continues to grow in both participation and enthusiasm, creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all involved. A huge thank you goes to Jean Hunter for her dedication to teaching our classes and for choreographing new dances when needed. Her creativity, patience, and commitment are truly valued and make a lasting impact on our members. We’re also incredibly grateful to our volunteers—Lynne, Lesley, Gail, and Ellie—who attend every week to support our sessions. Our dancers were provided with some wonderful performance opportunities; highlights include performances at the Boswells Shows and an appearance at the Tillingham Flower Show. These events gave members the chance to showcase their hard work and talent, while building confidence and enjoying the experience of performing to an audience. We are proud to recognise individual achievements and the Katie Whalley Dance Achievement Award was presented to Jonathan Birt in recognition of the outstanding support he has shown to fellow members. A very well-deserved award—congratulations, Jonathan! We are excited about the year ahead and hope to perform well. Continuing to build confidence, skills, and enjoyment through dance remains our key focus. Thank you to everyone involved for making Grapevine Dance such a positive and inspiring group. **Vanessa Hellier, Dance Group Manager** The Grapevine Dance Group, including two new members, have been working enthusiastically on two new dances: Night Fever by the Bee Gees and Booty Swing by Parov Stelar - a rip roaring Charleston. Members were excited to perform these dances at the recent shows at the Boswells School in April/May 2026 and were received, as always, with great success, warmth and applause. As usual, the school is hugely supportive, with the new head of Dance, Rob Gentle and his students, leading the way with an inclusive Community Dance show involving many local groups. We look forward to dancing there again in July and also at the Columbus Summer Fair in June. Our final performance this year will be at the Tillingham Flower Festival in July. **Jean Hunter, Dance Tutor** 10 ## Activities and Impact In 2025, Grapevine Essex delivered a vibrant and diverse programme of **43 outings** , including **three residential stays** , carefully tailored to the needs, interests, and abilities of our members. - Boat trips, pub lunches, fishing, and banger racing - Visits to castles, museums, historic sites, and stately homes - Water sports, guided walking tours, zoo and animal park visits, and bowling Across the year, a total of **1,243 individual places** were offered. **88%** of these places were booked, demonstrating sustained engagement with the programme. While the overall number of places was slightly lower than in 2024, demand remained consistently strong. Participation levels were influenced by wider external pressures, including rising transport and energy costs, which impacted both affordability and delivery, alongside increased competition from other Chelmsford‑based groups. Despite these challenges, the high uptake highlights the continued relevance and value of Grapevine Essex activities to our members. - Art and craft workshops, cooking sessions, and other practical life‑skills activities To ensure a balanced and enriching offer, all activities were structured around five key outcome‑focused categories: **Life Enhancing** , **Educational** , **Creative** , **Fitness & Exercise** , and **Life Skills** . We strive to be both inclusive and adventurous in our approach, and there is very little we will not consider when designing our activity programmes. This broad and flexible offer enables us to meet a wide range of interests and aspirations while supporting our mission to promote positive mental well‑being, boost self‑esteem, and help members lead more connected, fulfilling lives. The programme supported members to build confidence, enhance mental well‑being, and strengthen meaningful social connections. Our calendar featured an exciting and varied mix of opportunities, including: - West End shows and local theatre trips 11 ## What People Say... I enjoy the trips, as I get to spend time with other people. I love it when my sister or niece come along. I very much enjoy Tuesday Club nights. Bingo and disco are my favourites as they are good fun. I love being a Grapevine member as I know lots of people and I like seeing everyone. I am very excited about going to the Isle of Wight in August. Over the year, I enjoyed going to see Wicked at a London theatre. I know quite a few of the songs and we were singing along. Grease the Musical was a surprise because we went on some fairground rides as well as watching the show. Danny Zuko walked very close to a few of us, so exciting. I also liked being in the dance off at the end of the show. When I visited Belfast we went to the Titanic Museum, so I thought the Titanic Experience was very good indeed but so sad. I love the Grapevine trips and big thanks to all the Staff and Volunteers. I enjoy different trips and have lots of fun with all my friends. I love game night at club night. My favourite trips is Pinocchio it was a funny show I continue to be in awe of everything Grapevine do to enrich the lives of the members. The staff are always really supportive and seem to have a knack of understanding the scope/abilities of all the members. They always do everything they can to encourage members to feel empowered to achieve the best they possibly can. No one is ever left out. I recently attended the residential in Suffolk, supporting my sister. I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed myself. The itinerary was packed with really interesting, fun filled trips and activities. It is truly inspiring to see how proud and happy individuals are when they achieve sometimes the simplest of things. Standout has to be the smile on one members’ face when she braved her first ever boat ride. I can honestly say, attending these events enrich my life too and have given me a greater understanding of the uniqueness of every one of us. I'd like to say a huge thank you to Jackie, Vanessa, Mary and Simon for always providing support, advice and listening when I've shared concerns not related to Grapevine but my sister's care in general. What you have all done, and continue to do, to build a warm, safe, inclusive community is totally amazing. Oliver enjoys being with his friends, and always enjoys the trips I enjoyed the Titanic Interactive Exhibition, TopGolf, Only Fools and Horses Show, Goat Yoga, The Curve water sports, Pinocchio, the Maldon and Colchester walks, the Christmas party and the Blackmore shows. I also love the bingo and the discos at Club Grapevine I have enjoyed going to Dance and have lots of fun going to Grapevine trips with friends. 12 I love going to Grapevine Dance Group; it’s fun and enjoyable and we always have a laugh. I love doing the shows and performing our dances in public. The Winter Programme was bursting with shows, which suited Danielle as she loves the theatre. She collects programmes and is in her element by showing them to everyone. She keeps telling people, you should come with Grapevine to the shows, they are really good. I loved the outings last year with Grapevine I really enjoyed the Wales residential, Wicked and Grease, and at Christmas I loved the light show at Helmingham Hall. It’s always fun when we go on outings, there’s so many Danielle enjoyed the Easter Residential at Darsham, she loves being able to see her friends everyday and chat into the night. She also enjoys all the craft activities. The Barn Dance is one of her favourites, as she spends all evening chatting to people she has not seen for a while. She had a wonderful time at all the Summer outings. Her absolute favourite was the Grease Immersive trip. She continues to love all the interaction and experiences Grapevine provides. She would not be able to experience such a variety of activities without Grapevine. I am grateful to the Grapevine staff to take such good care of my daughter. enjoyable activities to take part in. It makes me proud to be a member, Grapevine brings us all together; we always have a laugh together and it’s like one big family. All the staff are amazing and helpful, when I first joined Grapevine I was very nervous but was welcomed by the staff and they helped me make friends, the staff are always kind and supportive. Since joining Grapevine I have met people with the same interests and made so many friends it is honestly amazing. It brings us altogether, no one gets left out, we all love to welcome new people and build friendships, we are all friends here at Grapevine. I really loved the Grease trip. We were allowed to dance with the dancers and saw all the important scenes. Such a varied selection trips this year, covering Activity Centres, Theatre Trips, Camps, Science Museum, Butlins, Cookery Session, an Immersive Experience, Craft Activities, Pantomines, our annual Christmas Party to mention a few. I loved the cooking at Ann’s School. I would love to go again. The Goat Yoga was funny, I was scared at first, but they were really cute. I like all the outings and having fun with my friends. Vanessa and Mary always look after me. Adrian and Simon make me laugh. Again all brilliant in their own way but my favourites were the Residentials to Darsham, Butlins and the Wilderness Centre; the London Science Museum which was very hands on; Flatford Mill, always beautiful; Grease the Musical, so much fun with lots to do and see; The Wicked Show which had everyone dancing; The Titanic Immersive Experience, very moving; Goat Yoga, a totally new experience and I think everyone fell in love with the goats but they wouldn’t fit in our minibus. It is very rewarding to be a Trustee and also to volunteer when I can. I can see how much the charity means to our members, they really have fun on the varied activities, being amongst their friends, old and new, in safe environments. 13 ## Fundraising Events Our first fundraising event of the year was a comedy dinner, with our own Simon Jones starring as Manuel. Most of the income was received at the end of 2024, so it’s not included in the 2025 accounts; however, the event raised £522. The Barn Dance in May was very well attended, with 130 people joining in the fun. We raised over £1,000 through ticket sales and the raffle. Finally, the Quiz Night in November, hosted by Mark Holland as Quizmaster at the Old Chelmsfordians’ Club, raised £845. Throughout the year, we held fundraising stalls at the Clacton Air Show and other events, sold Christmas cards, and held raffles, raising over £1,000 in total. This included £72 raised by Ellie Turburville who, in true entrepreneurial spirit, made bespoke pens and other items to sell. The Fun Walk in September raised £1,954, with a large group of members, parents, staff and volunteers walking together across Chelmsford. Well done to everyone involved - what a fantastic total to raise! We welcome any ideas you may have for fundraising events you’d like to hold on Grapevine’s behalf. Debbie Martin Smith 15 ## Treasurer’s Report I am proud to announce that this has been my first year as the Treasurer, having taken over from Monika Kelly at the beginning of 2025. I care passionately about Grapevine Essex and love seeing the members’ enjoyment when attending all the fantastic club nights and other organised events. It is a privilege to be the Treasurer and a volunteer of such a wonderful charity. However, Grapevine owed £2,498 to various sources for the December events. As Grapevine Essex does not receive any government funding, our income instead comes from fundraising, grants, donations and members’ fees. Fundraising events throughout the year raised an impressive £5,563 after costs. We are very pleased that the fundraising events continue to be so well supported in the local community and amongst those involved in Grapevine. Our grants and donations fell to £5,000 in 2025. We did, however, receive Gift Aid of £242 from donations and are extremely thankful to our list of benefactors all of whom can be found on page 15. As a charity with an annual income of less than £1 million Grapevine Essex is not required to have our accounts audited. However, an Independent Examiner must inspect them. Our Independent Examiner is Mr Robert Andrews, who is registered with the Association of Charity Independent Examiners (ACIE). Having inspected the 2025 Annual Accounts a report of his findings is provided on page 17. If you would like to discuss any potential grants or donations, fundraising or sponsorship opportunities, please do get in touch. Positively, membership fees rose to £2,510 in 2025 from £1,843 in 2024, showing the increasing interest in joining Grapevine Essex and the continued enjoyment of our current members. I look forward to another successful year in 2026. In terms of risk factors, the main on-going risk to the future of the charity is a reduction in the income that is required to pay the staff. The paid staff are vital in running the charity and organising the events that members continue to attend and enjoy. Grapevine Essex plans to retain a minimum of £7,000 as free reserves this year, representing the average expenditure for one series of events.
