St Germans Priory Trust
Directors’ Report for 2021
-
1.The Lease between the diocese and the Priory Trust was agreed between the diocesan legal representatives and the Trust and signed on May 19th 2016. Therefore we completed five years as the responsible body for the St Germans Priory on May 19th 2021.
-
2.We are solvent after the fifth year and up to the present time with modest funds in the accounts (£17,000 as of November 30th 2021). Accounts have been independently audited and submitted to the Charities Commission and Companies House.
-
3.This year has been challenging with the pandemic of COVID-19 continuing in England and the world. This resulted in a national lockdown in the early months of 2021, with church services prohibited between January and April. Church services did take place between April and December.
-
4.Events at the Priory had to be cancelled, severely reducing our revenue. When allowed, we were open with social distancing.
-
5.We made an appeal to villagers for funds in a time when fundraising was severely curtailed by the pandemic. Aiming for £7000, we raised £9000 and the villagers were extremely generous.
-
6.We applied for emergency funding from Heritage England in 2020 to repair the lead guttering on the south wall and repointing in the wall to prevent dry rot. This was successful in raising £25,000 and the work was delivered between March and June 2021. This employed local specialists and the work should last 200 years.
-
7.We delivered a Christmas Market in November 2021 which was a great success after a difficult year. We raised £1700 and many people attended, with about 23 stalls of local craftspeople.
-
8.Pilgrims have been using the Celtic Way beginning at St Germans Priory. For the first time pilgrims stayed the night in the Priory for a donation according to what pilgrims can afford. About 15 pilgrims stayed in the Priory. We checked this was covered by our insurers.
-
9.The Priory helped to organise an Evensong at which the Bishop of St Germans (CofE) presided and the Roman Catholic Bishop of St Germans preached, a wonderful occasion and service.
-
The following funding was secured:
-
St Germans Community Shop Fund: £500 for repairs to lighting.
-
- As well as the above grants, money has been raised by the following events:
-
There are people who give donations monthly under Gift Aid.
-
• We receive card donations through the Goodbox and wall donations from visitors.
-
The Priory is on the Visit Cornwall website.
-
The Priory is registered as a potential film location. 13. The Trustees met monthly during the year on Zoom. There are seven trustees on the Trust Committee.
-
The Trust website has been maintained with information and latest news. 15. The St Germans Priory has succeeded in remaining open (when legal) and sustainable despite the pandemic.
