• 1 Introduction

The Ujamaa Children's Trust (the Trust ) is a registered charity number 1150850, and with HMRC reference number XT28344 and its address is 86 Trevelyan Road, Tooting, London, SW17 9LN.

The current trustees (the Trustees ) of the Trust are Imogen Fisher, Hannah Woodthorpe, Claire Ezekwe, Stuart Parnaby and Karen Bedborough.

The Trust Objects and Public Benefit

• 2.1 The Trust was established pursuant to the trust deed dated 30 December 2010 (the Trust Deed). The Trust Deed sets out the charitable objects of the Trust and it is the view of the Trustees that these are in line with the charitable purposes described in the Charities Act 2011.

• 2.2 The charitable objects of the Trust are as follows:

"The Objects of the Charity are to provide relief from poverty, destitution, misfortune and helplessness and the advancement of education to vulnerable children, young adults and orphans and their families, including but not limited to the provision of;

• 2.2.1 appropriate permanent housing for such children and young adults until they are able to support themselves;

• 2.2.2 healthy and nutritious food, clothing and medical supplies and basic needs of such children and young adults and the preservation and protection of their good health;

• 2.2.3 access to good quality primary and secondary schooling and the provision of all relevant educational materials including stationery, uniforms, books and other equipment;

• 2.2.4 access to higher education such as (but not limited to) university or vocational training and the provision of all relevant educational or training materials including stationery, uniforms, books and other equipment and tools;

• 2.2.5 a home that is happy and safe where such children can live together as a family and grow to be responsible, kind, empowered adults;

• 2.2.6 assistance to support the integration of such children and young adults into mainstream society when they are of an appropriate age by providing them with training such as English, computer skills, cooking, cleaning and all general life skills and values so that they may go out on their own as adults and support themselves, such assistance may include the provision of supported living accommodation for young adults to transition to fully independent living;

• 2.2.7 to assist government or other initiatives on the eradication of the problems affecting such children and young adults;

• 2.2.8 to work for the protection, development and survival of such children and young adults;

• 2.2.9 to do all lawful acts as are compatible with the objectives of the organisation."

• 2.3 All actions of the Trust must further the charitable objects referred to above and it is the view of the Trustees that they do so.

• 2.4 A charity's aims must also be for public benefit. There are two key principals of public benefit, first that there must be an identifiable benefit and second that the benefit must be to the public or a section of the public.

• 2.5 It is the view of the Trustees that the provision of relief from poverty, destitution, misfortune and helplessness and the advancement of education to vulnerable children, young adults and orphans and their families is for the public benefit. It is also the view of the Trustees that this public benefit does not lead to detrimental or harmful consequences.

• 2.6 The objects of the Trust set out that the Trust will assist the section of society which constitutes vulnerable children, young adults, orphans and their families.

• 2.7 The Trust supports the Ujamaa Children's Home in Tanzania. This is an organisation which was set up in 2010 by Carley Mchome and currently looks after 29 vulnerable children and young adults in Arusha in Northern Tanzania. The Ujamaa Children’s Home provides a stable home environment that promotes family relationships, emotional development, and personal security. That support continues until each child becomes an adult, has finished relevant education and is able to live independently.

• 2.8 It is also expressly acknowledged that while the Trust currently supports the Ujamaa Children's Home in Tanzania, there is nothing to restrict the Trust from supporting other organisations in the advancement of its charitable objects where resources allow.

• 2.9 It is acknowledged that where people or organisations benefit from a charity, other than as a beneficiary, then those sort of "private" benefits must be incidental, which means they are a necessary result, or by-product of carrying out the charity's aims. The Trustees will be mindful of this when deciding on how to act to advance the charitable objects of the Trust.

• 3 Trustees

• 3.1 Imogen Fisher, Hannah Woodthorpe, Stuart Parnaby and Claire Ezekwe continue as trustees of the Trust. Karen Bedborough has also been appointed as a trustee over the course of the last year.

• 3.2 The Trust Deed sets out that the Trust must have a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 trustees. Trustees do not serve for a maximum term.

• 3.3 All decisions of the Trust are taken by the Trustees. The Trustees consider that in making decisions of the Trust they consider the risks to which the charity is exposed and have adequate systems and procedures in place to manage those risks.

• 4

Trust structure management and activities

• 4.1 In 2024 the Trust made a number of grants to the Ujamaa Children's Home in Arusha Tanzania. The Ujamaa Children's Home receives funding from a number of sources, its largest donor being the Ujamaa Foundation which is based in Australia.

• 4.2 In supporting the Ujamaa Children's Home the Trustees consider the immediate and future needs of the home and the children and young adults supported by it. The grants made by the Ujamaa Children's Trust provide regular funding which is important to enable the Ujamaa Children's Home to manage its running costs and funding of one off costs for specific projects as appropriate.

• 4.3 In November 2024 Imogen and her son Fraser visited the Ujamaa Children's Home. As well as catching up with everyone, this was also a good opportunity for Imogen and Carley to discuss the current and future needs of the organisation.

• 5 Grants made to the Ujamaa Children's Home in 2024

• 5.1 In the year from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2024 the Trust has made grants of:

• 5.1.1 £10,010 through regular donations towards the running costs of the Ujamaa Children's Home which includes specific regular donations by named individuals;

• 5.1.2 £21,100 towards the Forward Together programme;

• 5.1.3 £1,295 towards clothes and books and Christmas presents which Imogen took out when she visited and trips while she was there including a trip to the cinema and a trip to Weru Weru Lodge to swim and ride camels;

• 5.2 Grants Charitable Objects and Public Benefit

The Trustees consider that they have complied with the charitable objects of the Trust and their duty to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the Charities Commission in making the grants to the Ujamaa Children's Home referred to above.

• 6

Fundraising

• 6.1 In the year from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2024 the Trust raised £34,059. Fundraising was predominantly through:

• 6.1.1 monthly sponsorship donations from a number of individuals; and

• 6.1.2 ad hoc donations through the Ujamaa Children's Trust GustGiving page; and

• 6.1.3 significant one off donations from Buchanan Programme & Simon Skinner.

• 6.2 Thank you to all those that have supported and continue to support the Ujamaa Children's Home.

Costs Incurred

The costs incurred by the Ujamaa Children's Trust remain limited to the monthly cost of £18 for maintaining a JustGiving account and the costs of making bank transfers overseas totalling £135.

8 Reserves

We note that on 31 December 2024 the Trust had £1,665 of cash in the bank. The Trust does not have a reserves policy in place and anticipates that this money will be spent in the coming year as decided by the Trustees in line with the charitable objects of the Trust.

• 9 The Future

9.1 In the coming year the Trust plans to continue to raise funds. It also plans to continue to support the Ujamaa Children's Home, particularly:

• 9.1.1 by sending regular amounts to the Ujamaa Children's Home to assist with its running costs; and

• 9.1.2 to assist with funding other specific items or projects which the Ujamaa Children's Home requires assistance with as they arise including the Forward Together programme.

• 9.2 The current project which is being focussed on is "Forward Together". This project will create a next stage semi-independent living environment for the young adults currently living at Ujamaa Children’s Home who have completed their Secondary School education and are over 18 years. They will continue to be supported through various forms of higher education (University, College, Vocational Training etc) and provide for their housing, security, general needs, emotional support, and life skills training.

• 9.3 Ujamaa Children's Home is in the process of finding land close to our current home so that we can purpose design and build a home for this next stage and move ‘Forward Together’. We envisage something like ‘Halls of Residence’ where students have independence within a supportive environment. It will be a stepping stone to the real world and give the young adults coming through the Ujamaa Children's Home the opportunity to take on more responsibility and be more self-sufficient, without being totally left on their own. Ujamaa Children’s Home is a family and that doesn’t stop just because the young ones turn 18. We are committed to long term support and creating measurable impact through innovative care practices.

• 9.4 The Trustees are of the view that this accords with the charitable objects of the Trust, in particular to provide appropriate permanent housing for vulnerable children and orphans until they are able to support themselves.
