AGM 2020

Chairman’s report

This year has been challenging. Fundamental to CoActive Arts is social and artistic interaction, not only in the activities themselves but in the combating of social isolation and the promotion of physical and mental stimulation. The impact of the Covid restrictions has necessitated some significant and innovative changes in how we have operated this year. One of the advantages of being a small close knit team is that it is possible to plan and instigate changes quickly and effectively. Having said that, there is no substitute for live group activities which are the hallmark of CoActive Arts. We are already planning for when these will once again be possible.

CoActive Arts continues to be managed effectively and we achieve an awful lot with the funds available to us. You will see from the accounts, which Janice will present that we have no debts and we have some money in hand.

In the past, one of our key challenges has been maintaining continuity between one project ending and another one starting caused by funding gaps. I am pleased to be able to report that this situation has been all but irradiated due to the development of a much improved funding strategy and its implementation.

As reported last year, one of our remaining challenges is to create a sustainable legacy. We remain heavily dependent on two individuals and recognise that the long term future of CoActive Arts requires that we can survive and prosper irrespective of the individuals within the organisation. I would emphasise that we are not planning for any change in personnel in the near future. We are making steady progress towards sustainability but we are not quite there yet.

A major change this year was our move from St Andrew’s Church to The Ridings. We are most grateful for the support and encouragement given to us by St Andrew’s over the past years but the opportunity to work with Stride Theatre and The Art House was an opportunity too good to miss and we look forward to an exciting future.

I am delighted to report that we have welcomed three additional trustees. They each bring their own strengths and skills and are already having an impact on the work of the trustees. Unfortunately we have been unable to meet face to face for what seems like a very long time. However, we do meet, together with the Core Team on a regular basis via Zoom and are in this way able to conduct the business of CoActive Arts successfully.

Summary

CoActive Arts is a small charity, entirely dependent on grants. Attracting this funding has always been and continues to be a challenge. However, even during this difficult year we have succeeded in remaining financially viable whist adapting to a very different working environment. CoActive Arts continues to do incredible work with people with learning disabilities and I am confident that we will continue to go from strength to strength
