around 50 womcn and 70 childrcn from all over th¢ UK cvcry ycar.

abuse. As years the charity's mission became better understood and support from th¢ local community coniinued io
Fast fonvard 10 2024. Family Help is now Family Help Dariington CIO (CIO uthblished in 20131 (Kcupics a
purpose-built refuge with 8 units and oEKTries a bw dom¢%tic aEwse helpline. This year. the refuge accommodated amund
48 woinen and 69 children ond th¢ helpline r¢¢eived approximately 5(KJ call5.
Family Help aims to keep women and children safe from domesii¢ abuse by providin8 safe and confidential accommodation
herc residents are always welcomed with a non-judg¢menral. carkng and compassionat attinth.

Family Help offers survivors the space, time and resources Io D]ake infornied life choices and ils centra] put￿ls¢ is lo enable
survivor5 to chan8c iheir own lives ¥nd move towards more N)sitive and safer oui¢omes. The refuge 14 a place wherc
omen and iheir children ¢an be free from violence and dome￿1¢ abwse. Family Help's person-cen¢red appr()ach is shaped
by the service-user, which promotrs social inclusi￿) atxl allows them io build u￿n their stsmgths and find their OWD
solutions. The skills that seTri¢e users gain help them io remove thems¢lv¢s from unhe81th)' relAti{rf￿ipS and grow in
awarene&8. equipping them to improve just their own life but the lives of those around them.

unty, so there is still a long way to go but with carly intern'ention and cducation for all. no mattcr of age, gender, rdce or

Statisii¢s exploring the experiences of 40 wom¢n who have survivcd domestic abuse with curreni or previoLLS cxpcrietKe of
temporary safe a¢¢ommodation in England. li is im￿rtant that clien15' lived experiences relaling to dom&stsc abuse and

suprK)rt - Family Hclp's helpi1￿ can provi(k eqsential si8nwin8 and suprrtin for those indirectly affected by
domestic abuse.

When ￿e sLirted ag support workers, we were r￿rt of a ieam of five proiiding supNMt to the women and children in a refuge
that was dilapiddied aThd falling down #round our ¢ar51 li sittwted within an old Viciorian workhouse and often rcsidents
'ould Say thcy fcli a 'presencc' of others rcsiding with thcm. tkspite thi& th¢ thgc had a welcorning a￿1 calm a￿￿4)hLY¢
aNI was a hatvy home for hu￿ of families over the yeaTS.
Back thcn, families sometimes had ro share ihe large rooms that weff usad as isolation wards in another life. This kind of
communal living meant thai life-long frien(b.hips and iM)Thb" were fonned aNI the farnilies benefitted from ihe Inv￿uable
supp)rt of DoIju51 the sthff but their peers. women who had walked in their sh￿S and und¢rsi(xxl compleiel}' hoH, they felt.
There was no such thing as wi-fi back then and only one television in the entire building! 11 Testdents needed to ¢ontsci stalT
out-of-hours they would use the communa] phone to seNI a m&wge ￿ the pager held by the memiKr of s&ff on4all.
Residents ivould enjoy group sessio￿% in the refuge and day trips (Mjt in the beloved minibus - the nKithers would often
babysJ¢ one anothcls chilthcn so that tlKy could CDiOy a bit of frcedom.
Today? we occupy a purpostrbuilt refuge - ¢ach unit is furnished arnl h¥$ i(8 own bathrrx)m. We en$ure thai the are Sel
up when new families arrivc and they haye 4Mre beddin8 and iowels, f￿1. toiletr&es a￿1 cleaning products io gei them
start￿. We haN'e wi.fi throu¥hout the building with smart TV5 in units and communal areak Recently. the charity
invested in a tnnd new playwnd aDd refiubished the pla￿ so ioda￿5 tefvge is much brighter and well-equipped
compared to the old workhouse bui the welcoming, homely alTrK)sphere remains.

of dom￿tiC abusc in thc l(Kal communiry. Ivhcn I stsrted I h8d very little know'ledgc of how refugcs worked but with thc
support and guidance of the team. I ltrdrned quickly and became incredibly passionate about ihc scrvice and th¢ w'omen and
children it supports.
My ￿%]Ill)n was by tIK Natiortal Lollery fcr five yew5 a￿1 over this I have made changes to the way in which
Family Help delivers its awareness-raising in the community. l identified what worked. what required improvement and wh
needed to change. When I sianed. awarenes5-fdising presentations were simple Word documents. now they are a visual event
with photos, grdphics, Ststisil￿ and feedback from Service•￿se[S. Fach presenthiion is thilored to suii and I deliver
presentations to a wide rdnge of audiLYK¢s, from bU￿.ne&￿e$ to church group5 - connecting with pwle and helpin8 them to
¢rstand the impath of domesti¢ aixLse is one of my favouTit¢ pans of the job.
ReCo￿ls1ng the need to maximis¢ ihe use of digital rnarketing to rdise awaren￿ I worked alongside the Service Manager
to launch an updated website atNI ￿la] m￿la channe]s to pronx)te our service and our ca￿. Our reach is larger than il ever
ha5 been before and we regutarly re¢cive requests for advice a￿1 surp)rt as well &s er4uiries alx)ui how people can support
Ivhen the funding for my role as Community En8agemeffl W0￿er came io an end this year, I thrilled io be offered ihe
opportunily io take ort a hvbrid role combaning eommuniiy engagement with suppm within the refuge. I feel rny rol¢ at
