faith, or live in a particular postcode. We recruit by word of mouth, and now members often come b￿ause
they have been inspired by ona of our concerts. We have a coro membership of around 180 8inger3.

Our basic wograffffie is to perfonn three or more tim88 per year, singing an 8dectic rary of classical,
ec¢l88ia8tical, folk, pop, and ￿ld music. Vox ho8 ￿1ft a reputation for daveloping exciting and innovativ8
. writton by our Musical Director, Harvéy BrryJgh our founder, Justin Butcher. The cornpo8ition8
have t8ckl8d contemporary themes such as mental health (Music on Mind>, slavery (The Year of
Jubilee l Freedom Song), poverty (The Stony Field), and climate changé (Ona's Flood). Our aim is to
strengthen that aspect of our and to extend the 8cope of what we can pr88ent, both to local audiencos
and rnore widely. In addition to creative %KJrk of our Mu8iC81 Dlroctor arKd found8r, wo are greatly
h•lped by *rrking regularty wrth nationalty and intemationally recognised 8lnger8 and musicians, *tK• are
committed to thing with Vox in a cornmunity letting, and see this partnership as mutually beneficl81.
Vox has always been committed to highlighting social i8sues and to supporting Olher chariti￿ Ihrough our
fund-raislng activities. Since ￿ began in 2009, we have 8UPPOrt8d moro than 20 par￿r charitabl8
organisations and rai88d over £80,WJ to 8UPPOrt tr￿1r worf(. Th18 r6main8 a eore part of our vislon and
distinguishing feature of our choir.
Our 8tory over the pa8t 15 year8 18 a very positive one, but do not w￿t to b• complacént. The wider
contaxt tr the art8 in gor*ral 18 challenging and ￿ arn dear that need to thlnk carnfully about our

Our 2024 wti8tlc pYogramm• was exciting and full of hlghlights. ft wa8 al80 Inttodibly busy, We began in
February, with a packed concart, at St Luke'3, p•Yorniing In The Studk? ￿ The Sp8d81 AKA, Jorry
Dammors hirnself attondad. After the concert he 8aid how moving it was to have his groundthaking music
rovived by Harley and sung by Vox. In March, we took The Sun Does Sthne to Hackney Empiro for
another thrilliro pwf(Ymance. With funding from the Art8 Councll and Backstage Trust we able to
enhan￿ th• 8tagilYJ to inere&qe tho drama and power d this 8mazirvJ 8tory.
Rather than opting for a relaxed 8ummor tem), perfonr￿d Harvey's adaption of the Kinks, Village Green
Preserv8tK)n Soo8ty and Arthur (Or Tha Deth'ne And Fall Of The Bntish Empire) at AlexarKlr8 Palace
theatre. We rnanaged to achieve ¥￿ther packed hous8 and ￿re thrilled to have Sir Ray Davies loin u8 for
the second time with his team
In the Autumn. we shifted our focjjs to classical music and porfOrn￿l Beryamin Britten'8 Cernmony ol
Camls on 30 Novemb8r, th st Jarnes's Plccadilly alongside Harvey Brough's Now We arn &'x, an original
work based on AA Milne'8 nurs￿ rhy￿8. Earlier in November, the Chamber Choir had parformed
Frnedom Sory at the Ragged School Museum in Tw Hamlet8, very near the gite where the Fisk Jubilee
SirvJern perfOny￿ to orphan thildren in 1873. Th venuè and intimate, old-fa8hioned dassroom 86tting
was partIc￿larlY pcwerful, and we are building on w links wbth Ihe MuseLwn. Finally, in December, the
Chamber Choir p8rf0rn￿d a beautifijl Christmas concert at St Luke'8, featuring a range of m6di8val 10
modem caro13. unfamiliar music a8 well as songs that everyone could ioln in $iNJing. We Y•pre supported
.Ihroughout the year by the musician8 8ThY 8oIotsts vtho rewlarly wrrk with Vox, and the Christmas concert
.. enabled some of our own choir members to step forward as soloists.

Th8 origin8 of The Sun L43es Shirn go bad( to 2019. trArt it ha8 created ripples and proiocts that w8rn
unfor&8een embarked on the oratorio. We had always been determined to get tho Story and th•
music into pri8on8 and. with funding from the Arts Council. we worked diracily ￿th Anthony Ray Hinton to
creat8 a 30-minuto radio programm• that Combined hi8 voi(x and our music. In Summer 2024 Nati¢)nal
Prison Radio broadcast th8 programm8 across the UK pn'son e8tat• three times. Shortly afterward8, it
came to the 0tt6ntion ol a w0dL￿r at the BBC, arKI wern invited to adapt it for the Radio 4 Illuminated
sYogramm8 in Novembor. Thls felt Ilk8 a er￿orSeMent d the proi8ct, made even morn fvilling when
il was al80 Selected for Plck of th6 Week. The team who *fjrk8d on this project includ8d Anthony Ray
Hinton in Alab8m8. fiva Vox arKI an extemal co4iroCtor in London, arKI hls trainee editor8 based
in Makenl in Sierra Leon8.

From tha outset. wo hav8 Irfod to rolate Anthony Ray Hlnton'8 Story to lon*t8mi pri8￿0T$ in the UK, and
in %)24, we lirA(8d up with the Irene Taylor Trusl {lTh), an arts rtharity that takes music itho Prisons and
supports OX4)ff8nders through the arts. Our Hackrw Ernpire C￿￿Ort r81sed over £7LX) to support thelr
rk. In additi¢)n, provided 50 freo tickets for 8x<fvKlarn, their families and vulnorable groups lir*8d
to Irr and ¢XI)8r commLnity organisations. Irf mernbers ¢ontribLrted to the radlo programNNq their
stories will form the ba8is of a second podc48t in 2025. In Febnjary, we again worked with staff at
Vthittiwton Hospit81 to pul twher their annual service of remembrance for famili88 who have lost babi

FINANCIAL REVIEW
Financially 2024 was a strong y•ar. Vox put on four **ll-attended concorts, one in St L￿0,3
three at larger venue3. and the fir8t The Sun Lkjes Sthne podcast was complot•d, culminating In
BBC broadcast. Choir ￿￿rshiP ha8 rnmainod •teady at b•tYMn 85 arKI 100 Slngers each term.
Tho spring tem was popular with t4)th choir membars and 8LNJl8￿S With 100 8lngern signed up
one or both of tha concarts. Audienco number8 ￿*re strong with ts Speaal AK4 concert filling St
Luk8's *ith around 320 tid(et8 sold and the staging CA The Sun Does Shine at tho Hackney Empir•
achievin9 almost 8￿• of capacity. As pwt of the broader project to bring The Sun Llxs Shine story
and mu8iC to 4 wider audierKo, wo received 98nerou$ funding Arts Council England and, wlh
pwlicular emphasis on enhancod staging and presentation, the Backstage Trust. We are deeply
grateful for thoir support for this project. StrorYJ mwnb8r8hip and tKkot income generated
signifiGYrt Surplus for the tern.

Palace theatre. 91 thoir membern signed up - a strorvJ 8h(ywing for a summer tem), Iraditionally the
quiete8t. An effective markating campaign h8lped achieve dose to 80% of seats in the theatre being
sold, contributing to another surplus for the tenn.
