Vox has built a reputation for developirvJ exciling and innovative *rrk, *Yitt8n by our Musie41 Dirgctor,
Harvey Brough and our founder, Justin Butch8r. The 0)mE*￿tI1)n9 have tackled ¢I)nt￿POrary them8$
such as mental health (MUS￿ on the Mind), $lavery (Th6 Year of Jubtse / Fr8edom Song), poverty ITh8
Stony F￿d), and clirnate change (Ona's Flcod). Our aim is to strengthen that aspect of our work and to
extend the scope ol vh)81 we can presant, both to l¢x41 audiertes and more ￿dely. In addition to the
creative work of our Musical Diroctor and founder. we aro groatly helped by working regularly with
nationally and inlemalionally recognised singers and musiaans, are committed lo workirvJ with Vox in
a community setting, and Wt￿ $80 this partnership as mutually berofioal.
Vox has always been committed to highlightiTh3 g0¢ial issues to SLWrtitW other tharities through our

distinguishing f88ture of our choir.
Ro¥l•w of progr•
Following tha ambitious programm? 8chiav•d in 2022, 2023 was a slightty domanding year. We
continued to rebuild our membership FQSt-CovKI: pérfor￿ a raw• of works, classical and modem,.
2nd we took forward wider project8 that had evolved from The Sun Lbes Shine (TSDS) and for Which
we rerAived significant funding from Arts Counul England (ACE).
Concort•
The choir focused on prodwng three exaling ar)d WEl1vr￿I¥ed through the year. In March, Lost
and Found leatured works by Purcell, Handel and 8routh and was perfomied to a large aLwJianG8 al St
James's, Piceadilly. We brwght together a barc*]ue ensamble of 11 rThJsiaan$, 5 soloists and a children's
choir, alongside the Vox Holl¢Jway thoir. The co￿1 was in aid of Safe Passage, a tharity working lo
reunite young migrants wilh family members in the UK. They spoke movingly about I￿1r work wlh
refugees and a 'bud(et collecliM' gwated a $ignifi¢a* dw11￿ for the tharty.
In JU￿. CAJr Summer concert. held At St Luke's. was designed to ￿ a fun event wth food and maximum
audience involvement. Choir members did the eAtering and invited paople to pay a little extra lo join our
aftemtsjn rehearsal so they ¢￿Id partiopale later. The wogramm, Harvey Brough'$ arrangements of the
Beatles, Sgt Peppw and Revolver albJm5, was aFP681ing 10 Poople of all agos and w& got a great
response. It was a herAic L¥Jt thoroughly enpyable evenirvj. wth great feedback from our audience and cc
singers.
In the Autumn lem. we ware invited lo retum to Sl Jam8s's. Picxadilly Io Ferform Faure's R8qupm and
The Prophet by Harvey Brough, a work we had last surYJ in 2013 The Vox Chamber Choir also perfonned
Incantal￿n of Eden, also by Harvey Brough with words by Justin Butcher. 11 was thrilliThJ to sing these
works in such a wonderful setting.

The Chamber Choir has continued to meet wkly aloro$id8 the main choir. In December. we perfomied
Ihe Bells of P8r8dise Christmas programm8 at Si Luke's. The setting was beautiful and the music uplrfling.
th wonderful musicians and a semi-chorns of soloists wtw) saro renaissance MI￿5 by Vittoria and
Swe8lind( and the exquisite Christmas Alotets by Francis Ptyjlenc.
Having funded The Sun Cixs Shiro th& roclxding arKI podcast project, ACE gave us a third
grant towards this project, enablirKJ us to present the shthv lo a mwh larger audience 8t Hacknay Empire.
The perfomianc• wa$ planned lor 2024 Lmjt securing the grant in 2023 m8ant wa could start promoting tha
show with the theatre team well ahead of the actual perfomwnce.

In Merch, we launthed Behleon th8 88ts. 8 3￿minute documentary that follows th8 thoir as il gets to
grip$ with the challengo of singing thLrt Anthony Ray Hinton's 3(￿yOar ordeal on death row in Alabama.
Tha film provides a compelling insight into Vox as a singing Community and explores soma of th
challervJo8 that arise thi complex swal i$suas are athjressed through music and the art8. The film
generated a lol of inlorosl, and wa were able to 8htr# rt iw'ce at a local cinema. With th8 film makers, we
ara exploring other way8 lo promote il more widely.
From January onwards. bogan *vrk on the TSDS podcast prg8ca, 8180 fLnded by ACE. The idea was
to lako the 810ry 8nd the music into pnsM$ in a way that ¥￿￿1￿ bo meanirthil to UK prisonèrs. espea'ally
those 3eNing long4em and indotemiinate senlonces. Tho Pris￿ R8dio Association {PRAI had agreed lo
work with us, but in May thoy told us that Ihty did not have capaoty to h8lp creale the programmes. Thay
could broadcast Ifthn into pri%Jns, but Vox wruld have lo yoduc8 them. Undaunted, we Set about
designing and developirwJ the podcasts ourselve$. In addili¢)n to tha mu$1¢ of TSDS, we wanted lo
interview Anthony Ray himselF, but given his heclic $d￿dule, Ixokering this look many months. We 8180
W8nloO to include the voices of UK prisoners arKI approached HMP ColdiThJley in tho hop8 that we might
record the pri￿￿Or3 we knew there. In the thi$ proved Impracti￿1, so Instead. partnered with the
Irene Taylor Trust IlThl, a music charity that wurks with former prisoner8. ACE agreed to extend the
tim8fram8 into 2024 arKI by December 2023 were ready lo start recOrdi￿a. This was new lerritory for the
thoir. Fortunately. a few choir mem￿erS h8d experiefTh in ￿08d¢89t1ng and Joum81i$m, so we put t¢)ggther
great team that could work wall with our Partr￿ts, the Equal Justice Initiative and ITh. And, although not
directly involved in the productim. thoir meffl￿ recognised this as an impjrtanl development in line with
our mission. womotiro our work and ueating a wder platfomi for wr music.

Throughout 2023. choir numbers have grown back to we£ovid levels. We launchad the Vox In51agram
account this year. creating another womotional platfomi to wth the venues we p8rfomi in and the
professionals w8 p8rfomi with. It 1$ also helping us to buikl a stronger communtty of Vox followers and
choir membars. Until the $umm8r. Harvey was suppc¥ted by Christina Gill, associate director. Sadly. other
commilm&nls meant that she had to step baca from Vox in Septembw, we were delighted that Rick
Leigh was able to Join us as accompanist. Other than our professional music leaders, Vox operates on a
voluntary basi5 Wlthout any paid administrative SUPFKrt Choir members ￿ committed and always wlling
to h&lp. but the demands on trustees are cx)nsiderable. A key decision. taken in 2023. to review the w8y we
operate will help build on our strerWs and potentially lead to som8 changes that should enable us to plan
ahe8d more effectively and better supwt V0￿S innovalive and experimantal approach to choral music.

After the Complexity of 2022, 2023 ha$ b88n a relatively straightforward year. Each term involved just
one Conc8rt-fv￿ al St Jarnes's. Piccadilly and one al (￿r base in Si Luke's church. Income and
expenditure for the year have both r8duc8d to around £48,CW a$ a rosult. vrith a n81 OLrtfiow of
£5,350 against Rgslrict•d Reserves and a net surplus of £4.495 on General Resgrv8s. This means
that our closing General ReseThes are slrorKJ at £12,078.
The Spring torm, with 82 members signed up, vnrk&J w to a perfonnance of our Lost and Found
programm& at Sl James's. Piccadilly in aid of the Safe Passage charity. The cost of a r&lotively18rge
professional musical ensemble1818van musicians ￿ five vocal sobists) was offset by Strong ticket
sales (around 340 sold) arKI the vonuo's g6n8rosty in charging a reduced fee for th8 event. Thi8,
combined with a bud(et CA)Ile(#ion. enabled Vox to pass on 8 lotsl of £1,750 to Safe Passage and
Still show a surplus for tha lemi.

th8 ft)cus of the Summer lemi. wth 75 members singing. FOCMI. prepared by volunl8èr$ in the choir,
was induded in the ticket price aTrJ, fcrf a small athjilional fa6, tho audionco invilod to
roh•arsal prior lo tha ￿nCert to ￿8b1? Ih8m lo partiapale in some of th8 songs. This wa8 very
popular and lickel sales were strong at almost 2SK) seatS-clog8 lo th8 capacity of the venufr. This,
Combined with a wrplus on refreshmonts, generated a strThig financial outtum for the temi.
Th8 Autumn tefm saw us retum to St James's, Picfadilly for o m¢ye ctassic41 programme with 88
members Signing up lo sing Fauro's Requiem and The Pffjphet, by our mu$i¢al diroctor Harvey
Brough. This was again a powlar thnl wth 385 t￿kets sold arKI th8 term showed a Jignificant
$urplu8.
Alongside the conc*rt activty. vn compleled Ihe film yoject Between the 8ars ￿thin budw and
drew down the final element of Arts Council England funding, a$ $81 out in Note 4. We staged
Showings of the film al the FinsLMJry Park Pidurehouse with costs ￿vered by voluntary donations.
Further opportunities to shrAv th8 film nyye widely arè boing explorod. Work 81s0 started on the
related podcast projeca, th0￿ rK* extemal costs ir￿￿rred in thi$ on the year.
We continu8 to supwt the music41 edLthi¢)n of a th81 ywrwJ musician who sang wrth the thoir lor
the first time in 2023. Vox also continues to $uppMxt th8 musical intra$tructure at St Luke, ,
contributing towards an athaitional radio mi(¥optKTh in Ihe year.
Through careful financial management have athiev8d otpctiV8 for each tem to show a
surplus. Resetves and cash balan￿9 have boen built up to a healthy lovel giving Vox a degree of
$ewrity and c4pa¢ity to addre$$ tho prgssures that face much of the charity arKI volunw 8ector.

Inevitably much of our atténti￿ focu80$ on tho logistics of ¢)rganising. promotirvJ and d8liverin9 high
quality porfonnances throughout th8 year, WKI also managing various related projacts like the
podcasts. We work hard to build strong relationships wilh partner organisation$- vrithoul thoir trust il
would b8 impossibl8 to do many of the more innovative propcts that we have urNJertaken.
Vox has been in existen¢o for ovw 14 ￿r$. so, in 2023. began to think abc¥Jt *there we wanted
to be in1$8yl 5 years, lime. We are proud that Vox Still trie8 lo be drfferenl and inrKJvative, bul we
also recogni5e that we operate in a challenging environThnl vh)8r8 fundirwJ for the arts 1$ light, and
Costs are rising. We have an inspiring leader in Harvey Bough, arKI a dedicated wp of tru$l8e8
and volunle8rs work incredibly hard Bul need to make sur6 that tyjr govemanca structures
are sustainable and well SUPF¥Jted rf are to continue to flourish. In 2023, we deu'ded lo
