In 2012 we became a Company Limited by Guarantee. Our aims are to help people live healthy, independent lives within their community and combat social isolation. Our office also provides a focal point for volunteering and general information. We have a team of volunteers who provide services to the Builth & Llanwrtyd Wells locality area (see membership area below) These services include Community Transport, Prescription and Shopping Delivery, Home Support, a Lunch Club, as well as others. Demand for these services continues to grow and each year we face a challenge to raise sufficient funds to meet demand. Community Support has three main funding sources: grants, donations and funds raised in our charity shop. With continuing reductions in statutory funding, each year we face a budget shortfall and have to raise money through donations, fundraising activities and the income from our shop. ## **Membership Area** Annual Report & Accounts **2024/25** I 3 ## eS: . A - SSal lef ee Bw **Who We Are ho We Are** **The Board of Trustees** has overall responsibility for Community Support and ensures that the organisation complies with required legislation. Trustees attend regular meetings and training events, as well as bringing forward ideas which enable us to meet the needs of our community. All BWCS trustees are volunteers based in the community, many with years of experience working locally or with Community Support. Gareth Bufton will step down as Treasurer at the end of March, with Neil Howard taking on the role. Many thanks to Gareth for his dedicated work and contribution in this role. Staff are based in our Groe Street office, and are responsible for the day-to-day management of the organisation. Cathy Warlow, our manager, has been with us since 1995. Our team of volunteers provide all our services. **EVIE Driver**| In 2024/25, we had a team of 39 volunteers. 4 I Annual Report & Accounts **2024/2025** ## **Chairman’s Report** This is my second report as Chairman, and I am very happy to give another positive report on Community Supports activities. The year started well, as in May we agreed the lease of the old TIC building on the Groe Car Park, this followed lengthy negotiations with Powys County Council. This building has been unused since 2018 and after a huge amount of work, it has been transformed into a thriving community asset, bringing more services into the community, enabling more people to easily access vital services and support. Our Lunch Club now runs from here and is proving very popular with the diners and our Volunteers, who find the new kitchen an absolute delight to work in, making it even more enjoyable. Our Home Support service continues to grow steadily and provides invaluable support for people to remain in their own homes. The staff do a wonderful job providing this service Our office is very busy dealing with requests for help, providing support and guidance to callers and assigning tasks to Volunteers. Community Transport remains incredibly busy, providing essential journeys to health and social care appointments, ensuring those in need can attend without worry. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Gareth Bufton, who is stepping down as Treasurer after two years of service. His expertise as an accountant has been an invaluable asset to our organisation. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Builth Wells Community Support and we will be holding an event to celebrate this amazing achievement later in the year. **Builth Wells Community Support** relies on its team of volunteers to provide all our services. Our volunteers are drawn from all parts of our community and help us in a range of different ways: driving for our Community Transport, cooking and serving at our Lunch Club, working in our Charity Shop to raise funds or delivering shopping and prescriptions. Any amount of time you could give can help us and the community a few hours a week or more, can make a huge difference to someone. Whatever you want to do, however you want to volunteer your time, Community Support can help. Volunteering has so many benefits. You can: - Enjoy an active role in your community - Broaden your knowledge and experience - Meet new people and be part of a team **“I’ve been proud to volunteer with and for my community over the last few years. So many people have said that our services have been a lifeline for them and it is great to know that my work has been so beneficial”** ## **Allan, BWCS volunteer** 6 I Annual Report & Accounts **2024/2025** ## **Community Transport** **This service continues to play a very important role** for people in our rural area, where public transport is not readily available or accessible. The scheme provides transport for essential journeys. Our Volunteers use their own cars and are paid mileage expenses, passengers make a contribution to the cost of the journey and the balance of the Volunteer expenses is now funded by our own charity shop. Along with the volunteers, journeys are also provided by our 2 part time drivers in “Evie” our electric accessible MPV. Originally funded by the National Lottery Community Fund , since this funding ended in May 2024 it is now funded from our own resources. **----- Start of picture text -----**

All Drivers have an enhanced DBS, wear ID badges and have car signs to make them easy to identify. Lunch Club Lunch Club

Lunch Club is now held at the TIC building on the Groe Car Park in Builth Wells, opposite our office. We took over the building in May 2024 and have refurbished the building which now features a brand new kitchen and a new, modern dining experience for our members. Lunch Club provides a hot main course, dessert, tea and coffee for £5. There is also a raffle and a fun quiz. Numbers are limited and Members of Lunch Club need to be over 65. Each meal takes about 25 hours of volunteer time to prepare and serve. All meals are cooked entirely by volunteers. We currently have two volunteer cooks, Alwen Lewis and Paula Lee who plan the meals, do the shopping and then cook on the day. They have both completed the required Food Hygiene training and our lunch club was awarded a 5 star hygiene rating in March 2025. Other volunteers greet the diners, serve the meal, run the raffle and the quiz. Lunch club occasionally has guest speakers from local organisations, who give presentations or come to have an informal chat with the diners. Our local PCSO often drops in. For those who need transport to lunch club, this is provided by our community transport service. Annual Report & Accounts **2024/25** I 9 ## **Other Services** ## **Community Work** As part of our important place in the community, Staff attend meetings with other organisations and statutory agencies - local and county wide to discuss developments and partnership working, to ensure that our community benefits from any new initiatives. ## **Prescription & Shopping Delivery** We have been delivering prescriptions for our members for many years. In a rural community like ours, getting to the pharmacy can be difficult if you have a disability or don’t have access to a car. Prescription delivery is free and funded entirely by donations. Volunteers also pick and deliver shopping from Builth Wells Co-op for those who are unable to do so themselves. In 2024/25 we made 732 prescription deliveries and 188 shopping deliveries ## **Office Support** Our Reception is open from 9.30a.m.—1p.m. we have a steady stream of callers to the office with requests for our services and other information, enquiries about Volunteering, Volunteers for their tasks etc. ## **Foodbank** We are a satellite branch of Llandrindod Foodbank, part of the Trussell Trust group of foodbanks. We receive referrals from other agencies and also self referrals, we can then deliver the food parcel or it can be collected from our office. We receive supplies from Llandrindod Foodbank, but also accept donations of tins and dried goods to supplement the stock. ## **Wheelchairs** We have wheelchairs that people can borrow on a temporary basis. Please contact us to book. ## **Printing** Photocopying or printing is available to the community for a small charge. 10 I Annual Report & Accounts **2024/2025** ## **TIC In the C (Together ommunity)** The TIC, which stands for Together in the Community, is a new community building for Builth Wells. Leased from Powys County Council by Builth Wells Community Support and reopened for use in September 2024. It is available for community organisations to use for regular or occasional sessions (it is not for business use). Builth Wells Community Support run a lunch club in the building twice monthly, making use of the newly installed kitchen. We also ran a Warm Space in February and March 2025. Funding to allow us to refurbish, improve and use the building has come from: - Welsh Government and Powys County Council Transforming Towns Placemaking Grant (Mid Wales) - National Lottery awards for all - Co-op Local Community Fund - NFU Mutual Groups that we have booked in for regular weekly or monthly sessions in the building include: - Age Cymru Powys—Simply Nails Service - Builth Wells Heritage Society - Builth Wells Ladies Choir - Cymraeg I Blant De Powys / Cymraeg for Kids South Powys - Mid and North Powys Mind - PAVO Community Connectors - South Powys Parkinsons Support Group - RNID - Lunch Club Other groups have used the building for one off meetings/events and other activities. We have installed solar panels on the roof to keep energy costs down and installed a brand new fire safety system and CCTV, to keep the building safe and secure. Annual Report & Accounts **2024/25** I 11 ## **Home Support Home Support** In October 2022, we were awarded funding from Powys County Council to launch Builth & Llanwrtyd Wells Home Support. This is an Integral part of the One Powys/Vision 2020/25 prevention and early intervention programme and part of the Councils plan to roll out Home Support to all thirteen localities. Home Support is about helping individuals to live life in their own home, providing the support and practical assistance an individual may need in their day-to-day life to live at home, with confidence, in good health, independently and safely. The Home Support team work closely with individuals, their family and anyone else in their life, to help them with the support that they need. They also work alongside other organisations and professionals in the local community to help provide better all-round support. Home Support services are free. Access is not means tested or dependent on inclusion/ exclusion criteria and individuals can self-refer. Once an individual becomes a member of Home Support they can dip in and out of the service according to their needs without having to be re-referred. 12 I Annual Report & Accounts **2024/2025** ## **Home Support** Some of the things Home Support can help with include: - Care line responders 24/7/365 - Proactive wellbeing checks - Promotion of independence, wellbeing and healthy lifestyles - • Practical support - Assist carers with their role - Temporary personal and domestic support - Signposting, referral and help to access local community - Groups and support networks Our Staff, who are doing an amazing job of delivering this service include: - Bev Stafford, Senior Support Worker - Julija Lovin & Carol Smith, Support Workers (Carol left in March 2025) - Andrea Davies, Relief Support Worker At the end of March 2025, Home Support had 155 members, an increase from 96 members at the same time last year. Visits to local groups and coffee mornings have been successful in publicising the service and existing members are telling their friends and family about the service. Our Shop opened in May of 2007 and moved to its current location in 2015, it continues to be a great success, thanks to the wonderful support from the community in donating and purchasing goods, and of course our fantastic volunteers who staff the shop. The shop is now open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 10 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. We are also open on Saturday mornings 10 a.m. - 1.00 p.m. Since June 2023 the shop has been run by manager Polly Grace, Polly’s role was initially funded by a grant from the Moondance Foundation and gave us the opportunity to open the shop more and has added an overall sense of cohesion. Polly has been ably supported by shift supervisors Ingrid Gallagher, Sue Seed, Snowy Powell and Sally Dwyer. We have recruited several new volunteers this year and now have a volunteering team of ten. We are incredibly grateful to each and every one of them for their time, support and skills they bring to the job. We really couldn’t do it without you! **12 Volunteers In 2024/25** **2800 Volunteer Hours** **£9754 Gift Aid Raised** 14 I Annual Report & Accounts **2024/2025** ## **Charity Shop** The shop provides BWCS with an essential source of income as without this we would not be able to provide our services. It is also a valuable asset to our town, offering a variety of goods at reasonable prices and of course a great place to volunteer. Our manager also uses several online selling platforms: eBay to auction any unusual or valuable items and Vinted to sell on clothing that hasn’t sold in the shop. We’ve had some great successes on eBay – an early pressing of a Beatles LP made £40, and a Hermes ashtray sold for over £200! Whilst packing and posting can be labour intensive, the extra income makes all those trips to the Post Office worth it! Shop Manager Polly has also been able to use our shop Facebook account to advertise unusual or interesting items we have for sale – once almost causing a queue to form when some fetching Dr. Marten boots were advertised for sale the next day. We raise extra funds by claiming Gift Aid on eligible donations. In 2024/25 we raised £9754 in Gift Aid. Our shop front was repainted this year with a brighter colour which has given us all a lift! Sadly, Polly is leaving us, she is returning to education where she has so many valuable skills. We are hoping to persuade her to continue to do some volunteering with us. Annual Report & Accounts **2024/25** I 17 ## **Treasurer’s Report** ## **1 April 2024 - 31 March 2025** I am pleased to present the Treasurer’s Report for the financial year ending 31st March 2025. Our organisation continues to operate with two main income streams. I’m happy to report that the shop has performed strongly again this year, with a noticeable increase in turnover. This reflects the hard work and dedication of our shop manager and team. However, I must share the bittersweet news that our shop manager will be leaving. Her contribution has been outstanding and she will be a hard act to follow. We are committed to ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining the shop’s strong performance. In both accounts we have seen a rise in expenses, particularly in wages and utilities, as expected. Unfortunately, this has resulted in a deficit for the year. We recognise the importance of addressing this and are focused on seeking opportunities to strengthen and diversify our income streams, including through grants and fundraising initiatives. Every effort will be made to ensure the continued financial sustainability of our organisation as we look ahead to the coming year.
