Message from The Program Manager

2025 has been another year of growth, resilience and community impact for Up ’N Away. Despite the continuing cost-of-living crisis, we remained committed to ensuring that disadvantaged children and young people across Hackney had access to safe spaces, nutritious food, educational support and life-changing opportunities.

Throughout the year we continued delivering our Breakfast Club, Afterschool Homework Club, Summer Holiday Programme, Residential Sleepaway Camp and Vocational Skills activities.

More than ever, families have told us that our services are a lifeline. Whether a child arrives for breakfast before school, receives homework support and a hot dinner after school, joins a summer trip, or attends our residential camp, every programme is designed to help young people feel valued, supported and hopeful about their future.

None of this would be possible without our trustees, staff, volunteers, funders and community partners. Thank you for standing beside us and helping us build brighter futures together.

About Up ‘N Away

Established in 2012 , Up ’N Away exists to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people living in Hackney and neighbouring boroughs. We provide educational, recreational, wellbeing and holiday activities that many families would otherwise struggle to access.

Our mission is to reduce inequality, promote wellbeing, strengthen communities and help every young person reach their full potential regardless of their background or financial circumstances.

Our Programmes

Breakfast Club

Our Breakfast Club continued to provide a healthy start to the day for more than 100 children throughout the year. Many families face increasing financial pressures, and for children breakfast is the most important meal they receive before school.

Each morning, children enjoyed nutritious breakfasts in a warm and welcoming environment while learning about healthy eating and positive routines. Teachers and parents reported improvements in punctuality, concentration and readiness to learn.

The Breakfast Club remains a vital part of our year-round support for local families.

Afterschool Homework Club

Our Afterschool Homework Club supported more than 120 children during 2025, providing academic assistance, mentoring and a safe place to go after school.

Children received help with homework, reading and study skills from experienced tutors and volunteers. Every session also included a freshly prepared nutritious dinner, ensuring that children were able to learn and eat in a supportive environment.

Parents consistently told us that the club reduced family stress, improved school engagement and gave their children a sense of stability and belonging.

Our Programmes

Holiday Hunger Programme

In response to growing need, we launched a Holiday Hunger Programme upon receiving £19,731 from the National Lottery Awards for All to run the project over two years.

During all 13 weeks of school holidays, we provide hot nutritious dinners four days each week for 120 disadvantaged young people aged 13–16. Meals include soup, chicken or fish, vegetables, side dishes, fruit and bottled water, all prepared in our commercial kitchen.

A community survey found that 93% of families urgently needed food support during school holidays.

Summer Holiday Programme

Our Summer Holiday Programme once again gave children and young people the chance to enjoy fun, learning and adventure during the school break.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of supporters through the Big Give Summer Challenge, together with grants from charitable trusts and foundations, we raised over £40,000 to support the programme.

Young people took part in sports, creative activities, outings and team-building experiences that promoted confidence, resilience and wellbeing while helping families cope with holiday pressures.

Our Programmes

Residential Sleepaway Camp

One of the highlights of the year was welcoming 150 young people aged 14–18 to our residential sleepaway camp in Cambria.

The camp provided opportunities for outdoor adventure, leadership development, teamwork and personal growth. Away from everyday pressures, young people built confidence, independence and lifelong friendships in a safe and supportive setting.

The project was further strengthened by a £5,000 grant from The Pom Charitable Trust, whose loyal support has continued since 2017. Many participants described the camp as the most memorable experience of their year.

Vocational Skills & New Opportunities

We continued offering vocational and life-skills opportunities that help young people prepare for the future. Our First Aid training programme remained popular, giving participants practical skills, confidence and recognised certification.

During 2025 we also secured funding and completed planning for our new Woodworking Workshops, which will launch in 2026. These workshops will combine practical skills, creativity, wellbeing and community engagement, alongside a new monthly Community Fix Event where residents can learn repair skills and reduce waste.

Listening to Young People

Young people and families continue to shape the direction of our work. During 2025 we carried out consultations, surveys and feedback sessions across our programmes.

The findings directly influenced the development of our Programs and our plans for Woodworking Workshops and Community Fix Events. By listening carefully to our community, we ensure our services respond to real needs and create lasting impact.
