Message from the holiday programme manager:

A vibrant summer day in 2012 marked the humble beginning of Up 'N Away. With a handful of enthusiastic hearts, we set out to change the narrative for inner-city, socially isolated, and economically disadvantaged children and young people. Little did we know that this seed of an idea would grow into a thriving community, transforming the lives of hundreds in the heart of Hackney and Haringey.

As the sun set on our first year, we celebrated not just numbers, but stories - stories of 70 young faces illuminated by newfound opportunities. Fast forward to the summer of 2023, our Up 'N Away family has swelled to an incredible over 600 children. It's not just about the numbers; it's about the journey we've shared, the challenges we've overcome, and the triumphs that echo in the laughter of our young participants. Our canvas goes beyond the ordinary, painting a tapestry of hope and resilience. Imagine a breakfast club where 100 disadvantaged young souls kickstart their day with warmth and nourishment, exercise and guidance to follow a healthy lifestyle. Envision an afterschool haven for 120, where homework becomes a shared adventure and learning extends beyond the classroom and the young people also get a nutritious dinner which they would not get at home. Think about different vocational courses, such as, first aid, literacy, and baking, And let your imagination run wild in our two-week summer holiday program, where 610 young minds explore the wonders of art, nature, and life.

Our little painters create their own canvas, through actively being involved in the design and delivery of the projects which ensures that programmes are relevant to their needs, this improves their decision making skills, self-confidence and self-esteem.

As Programme Manager, I am gratified to see so many positive outcomes from our activities and projects. Young people make new friends, become fitter and more healthy, learn a variety of new skills and gain new interests and hobbies. It is so beautiful to see our old users come back to volunteer for our projects and act as role models. Our special needs kids were integrated well into activities, and all participants learnt tolerance and patience, and became more confident and responsible as a result. We anticipate that all this will be reflected in better school performance and a more promising future.

Message from the holiday programme manager continued:

In all our projects and activities and as an organisation we succeeded in overcoming the different global crisis’s, which has made us stronger than ever and ready for anything.

Our community, volunteers, and different generous funders have Joined us in this adventure of transforming young lives. Together, we'll continue to script stories that echo the laughter, dreams, and successes of the young souls we serve both with an increase in the number of users, and a broader canvas of activities.

our hearts are filled with gratitude for all our past support and excitement for the chapters yet to be written. You're not just a funder; you're a storyteller, shaping narratives of hope and possibility.

The charity is controlled by its governing document, deed of trust dated 25th September 2012. It is a registered Company limited by guarantee.

We improve the lives of inner city, socially isolated, deprived and economically disadvantaged YP from BAME communities, by providing a wide range of social, educational, recreational out of hours activities that they would otherwise not have to, due to financial hardship or social circumstances.

Activities

Summer Holiday Program

Up 'N Away, with the incredible support of its generous benefactors, orchestrated an outstanding two-week summer holiday project for 180 disadvantaged inner-city children aged 8-14 years, a notable increase from the previous years. Hosted on the vibrant campus of a local Ofsted-registered school, the program offered a dynamic mix of on and off-site activities. The young participants engaged in thrilling sports, balancing skills, woodwork, drama, and social activities. They also embarked on unforgettable adventures, including visits to the coast and countryside, exploring petting and milking farms, tree climbing, snow tubing, cycling, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing.

This project was particularly impactful given the current cost of living crisis, which has placed immense strain on these young people and their families. Up 'N Away provided a much-needed reprieve and a chance for joy and growth during these challenging times. This project not only fostered new friendships with peers, youth leaders, and dedicated volunteers but also reinforced the community's resilience and solidarity.

Activities

Sleep Away Camp

We also ran an incredibly successful summer holiday residential in Wales for 230 socially excluded young people aged 14-16 years. In the midst of the current cost of living crisis, this program provided a vital escape and a chance for these teens to thrive. The residential featured an exhilarating mix of on and offsite activities, including countryside walks, swimming, and various sports. Participants also enjoyed thrilling visits to high rope climbing courses, leisure centers, dry skiing slopes, and cycling centers.

The sleep-away camp was staffed by a team of highly qualified and experienced youth leaders and volunteers, all safely recruited and DBS checked. These dedicated individuals fostered a nurturing environment where the young people were encouraged to develop their individual strengths and take on age-appropriate responsibilities. This initiative not only offered respite from the financial pressures many families are facing but also empowered the young participants to grow and succeed.

Up 'N Away continues to be a beacon of support, helping young people navigate through these challenging times and providing access to free, helpful services to assist them further.

Activities

Breakfast Club

Our breakfast club was an incredible success for disadvantaged, low-income young people aged 1416 years. This initiative served a dual purpose: first, it ensured a healthy start to the day for these young individuals, who might otherwise have little or nothing to eat before school, and educated them on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Second, it empowered them by involving them in every aspect of the club—from setting up and serving to clearing up after breakfast. The young participants also took part in decision-making about which healthy foods to provide and how to serve them.

Adding to the excitement, we introduced a weekly exercise session led by a professional trainer, giving the young people an opportunity to stay active and learn new fitness routines. This program not only fostered a sense of responsibility and teamwork but also promoted a holistic approach to health and well-being, making it a truly enriching experience for everyone involved.

Activities

This initiative not only equipped these young people with essential life-saving skills but also paved the way for them to contribute meaningfully to our community projects while building a strong foundation for their future careers.

First Aid Course

After School Club

Responding to popular demand, Up 'N Away proudly continued its tradition of offering vocational courses for yet another year! This time, we launched an accredited first aid course for 12 eager 16-year-olds, many of whom are potential volunteers for our other programs. The course was an astounding success, with all 12 participants earning their first aid qualification.

Up 'N Away is thrilled to offer an afterschool homework club that's making a real difference for 120 disadvantaged young people! This program not only provides vital support with homework and enhances learning skills but also ensures each participant enjoys a warm, nutritious meal. The club has become incredibly popular, with full attendance every day. We're overjoyed to hear from participants and their families about the significant improvements in school performance, showcasing the program's impact. We are celebrating this fantastic initiative that's transforming lives and fostering brighter futures!

What's even more exciting is that these newly qualified individuals now have the opportunity to volunteer at our projects, gaining invaluable career experience.

Activities

Up 'N Away is delighted to announce the continued expansion of both our user base and the range of our activities, reflecting the immense need and remarkable success of our programs. Out-of-school activities are crucial for keeping young people safe, off inner-city streets, and engaged in constructive endeavors, especially during the current cost of living crisis. Our trustees are proud to report on the extensive array of activities we offer to so many socially and economically deprived young people.

This success is primarily due to the generous support from our funders, the dedication and high calibre of our staff and volunteers, and the trustees' deep understanding of the urgent and growing need for such initiatives. We have once again improved the lives of hundreds of disadvantaged and vulnerable young people by providing a variety of life-enhancing projects and programs. Join us in celebrating these achievements and the positive impact they have on our community!

Feedback

The enthusiastic feedback from our users and other stakeholders, coupled with the overwhelming participation in our activities, highlights the immense popularity and necessity of our projects. Energized by this response, our trustees are excited to announce plans to expand both the variety of our programs and the number of available places in the coming year. Stay tuned for even more opportunities to engage, grow, and thrive with Up 'N Away!

Future Plans

Exciting news from Up 'N Away! We're gearing up to broaden our activities and significantly increase the number of places available to meet growing demand. As our programs continue to flourish, we're on the lookout for larger premises to comfortably accommodate our expanding community. With a burgeoning waiting list, our commitment is clear: to enhance and enrich the experiences of every young person we serve.

Our immediate focus is on further refining our existing projects to ensure they deliver maximum impact. Of course, the success of these ambitious plans hinges on our fundraising efforts. Your support will empower us to not only sustain but also expand our initiatives, making a profound difference in the lives of disadvantaged and deprived youth. Together, let's build a brighter future!

12

Support

All of our projects has been made possible by the unwavering and generous support of our incredible funders. The young people we serve come from lowincome backgrounds, face social challenges, and are at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). Without Up 'N Away, these youths would have limited opportunities to participate in the enriching activities we've highlighted. Together with our dedicated supporters, we're opening doors and transforming futures, ensuring every young person has the chance to thrive.

Thank You

To everyone who has played a part in our journey, we extend our heartfelt gratitude. Your support has been the driving force behind our achievements, filling us with optimism and determination as we look ahead. Up 'N Away is committed to expanding our efforts even further, offering young people on the cusp of adulthood hope, opportunities, and a pathway to a brighter future.

None of our success would be possible without the unwavering generosity of our funders. It is through their steadfast support—both longstanding and newfound—that we have been able to reach new heights. We are deeply thankful for their contributions, which have enabled us to increase our impact, welcome more participants, enrich our activities, and significantly enhance the life prospects of those we serve.

Together, we are making a profound difference in our community, and we invite you to join us in continuing this important work.
