## TRUSTEES AND MANAGEMENT

The Church belongs to the Birmingham Methodist Circuit and the Minister who has overall Pastoral Charge for Lyndon is Rev Karen Webber.

The Church is managed overall by a group of Trustees. These consist of leaders of various groups that are run within the Church together with a number of Church Members who are elected democratically at the Annual Church Meeting to represent the interests of the congregation in general.

The Trustees elected to the Church Council at present are as under noted:-

Rev Karen Webber Trevor Bodfish Karen Burgess Tony Ludlow Janet Rudge Sarah Marks Pam Walton Andrew Wassall Claire Frew Chris Rowe Lynne Tyler Ian Smith Roger Hancock Adrian Burgess Kate Collen Kim Smith Lorraine Sibson Hazel Kench Johanna Hancock Ermine Mitchell - (appointed 21st May, 2023) Jacqueline Wassall - (appointed 21st May, 2023)

The Church aims to provide spiritual needs to meet all age groups and has an act of worship every Sunday morning. Young children are encouraged to come but have a ‘Time Out’ where they do activities. Lyndon endeavours to reach out to the wider community by supporting those on the margins either locally, within the U.K. or indeed worldwide.

## - SUMMARY OF ACTIVITY FOR PERIOD SEPTEMBER, 2022 AUGUST, 2023

As with many Churches and organisations, Lyndon began by slowly trying to resume Church Services and activities similar to those held before the Covid Pandemic. Many of the Groups within the Church have returned together with the Groups that we let out our premises to during the week but sadly there have also been losses. Overall, however, the lets are increasing and we have been pleased to welcome new Groups.

Throughout the year the Church has held a number of ‘special’ Services and events such as at Christmas and Easter. At Christmas we held our usual Christmas Fayre and we were pleased that the young Children from the local Primary School were able to come and sing carols to us and during January, 2023 some children came to the Church from the local Primary School to find out about the Church in general as part of a project they were undertaking. In the run up to Christmas we also facilitated the School in performing their annual nativity play in the worship space.

The Church Magazine continues to be produced on a bi-monthly basis and is a useful means of communication to the Church Members and Adherents in general together with some in the wider community and it is available in hard copy (ordinary print or large print) and electronically in an endeavour to meet all needs.

STEWARD’S REPORT - Around 40-50 people attend the Sunday Morning Worship on average although this figure can fluctuate depending on circumstances such as the weather and if there is a Special Service being celebrated then the number of people attending can be higher.

During the year, there have been a number of new people starting to come to the morning Services and we have been very pleased to welcome them. A couple have now become Members and we are hopeful that there will be some more in the future.

There are four stewards who oversee the preparation of the Church in readiness for the Service who are also supported with other individuals who assist whether it be as a Welcome Steward or helping with the technical aspects of the Service such as putting it on powerpoint or operating the computer during the Service. A Management Group also meet usually monthly to help in the planning of services and other general management issues within the Church and they report back to the Trustees.

The Church has a number of Pastoral Visitors overseen by the Minister and the Pastoral Secretaries. They endeavour to keep in contact and offer support to any Member especially if they are going through difficult times.

An additional collection is taken at Communion Services for the Benevolent Fund and the proceeds of this are utilised at the discretion of the Minister to help anyone who is going through a difficult time for whatever reason.

Throughout the year safeguarding issues and data protection have been adhered to.

The Groups that are run by the Church are as follows:

Girl’s Brigade - They meet weekly and undertake Badge Work, Games and Devotions and during the year have enjoyed a number of extra activities such as having a week-end away and joining in a challenge to name but two. Sadly following Covid some of the older girls did not return but at present there are around 27 girls in the Brigade.

Boy’s Brigade - Sadly this Group has not met since Covid. However, negotiations are taking place in an endeavour to restart but at present the talks are at an early stage.

Bible Study/Prayer Group - This takes place once a month in an evening usually led by the Minister. A small number attend and it is a good opportunity to have a prayer time together followed by a time looking in depth at a passage of scripture.

Messy Church/Time Out - Since Covid the children have not met monthly on a Saturday for activities but Time Out has recommenced. This is where young children spend a time away from the normal Church Service doing their own activities and then come back into Church for the final few minutes. Throughout the year there have been several occasions where the Children have participated in a special Sunday Morning service such as on Palm Sunday and the Nativity Service where they have made big contribution to it and the Service has become an all age Service which has been enjoyed by everyone. The numbers of children have grown in number a little and now stand around an average of six.

Lunch Club - This Group meets for a meal every Friday during term time and normally there are around 15-20 people attending. They consist of people who are Members at Lyndon together with some from the local Community. It provides a good opportunity to socialise and have a three course hot meal at a reasonable cost. A number of those attending live on their own and some have limited mobility so the Club is seen as a good opportunity to spend a little time away from their homes.

Ladies Club - This Group meets once a fortnight for a couple of hours in the afternoon. It is an opportunity for the ladies to have a time of social interaction whether it be by having a chat with one another or playing a game together. It is followed by refreshments and throughout the year special occasions are celebrated.

“Stay and Play” - This group will start to meet in September, 2023 on a weekly basis and so at the moment final plans are being made. It is being run by a Church Member and it will be an opportunity for pre-school children to meet together to play.

Lyndon People - This Group has now recommenced following a long break through Covid. It is held on a Sunday in the early evening around once a month and is a Service open to all. It is more informal than an ordinary Church Service and hence is relevant for people who like a slower pace or for those who have Learning Difficulties.

Lets - The Church lets out the premises to a number of outside Organisations. Some of these are commercial enterprises whereas others cater for some of the less disadvantaged groups within the Community.

The Church and Groups that Lyndon run depend to a great extent on volunteers who are prepared to give of their time and for all the people that volunteer in whatever capacity, Lyndon is immensely grateful as without volunteers the Church would cease to function. However, there is always room for more volunteers in whatever way they wish to serve. There is also spaces for anyone who would like to try out a new Group.

The Church’s activities are only mentioned in brief form but if you would like further details then they can be obtained.

## PUBLIC BENEFIT

Lyndon offers good facilities for lettings and it is also well positioned to other amenities such as public transport and being near to a major road. Thus we are fortunate in that we are able to have a steady number of lets which is increasing. These consist of some commercial enterprises as well as some groups that service the more vulnerable members of our society. Some of the lets have been with us for a number of years whereas we are also getting a number of new ones. We are grateful for the income which is generated by our lets as the letting of the premises helps supplement our income to be able to run the Church. We strive to help with the disadvantaged within our Community and hence have several Groups that specifically cater for their needs.

The Church has been opened during the year for the Children of the local Primary School to attend and the Church Centre is used as a local Polling Station for elections.

During the year our two Guest Churches have continued to meet but over the Summer they have both taken a break from meeting.

Lyndon opened up to the possibility of the Birmingham Methodist Chinese Church joining us. However, after many negotiations they decided not to come.

All our activities are open for all to join and we aim to give a warm welcome to anyone new that comes.

## FINANCIAL

The Accounts for Lyndon are prepared on an income against expenditure to the end of August each year. The future comes with a certain amount of uncertainty due to the high general cost of living and being faced with potentially having to pay a lot more for our utility costs as our present contract, which was negotiated before the huge increase in costs, comes to an end in December, 2023. The Accounts for the period September, 2022 - August, 2023 have been prepared and is a separate document. However, overall the amount of money collected by what the Congregation gives does not cover the amount of money it takes to run the premises and Lyndon is becoming ever more reliant on revenue collected from the lets.
