Organisation and membership
FEBS was founded on 1st January 1964 and is a Federab"on of biochemisty and molecular b¢ology Societ￿5. In
2022, its Constrtuent socieb.es spanned 39 countrie5 in Europe and neghbouring regions and included 35
Member So¢ielEs and 4 Associate Ilember Soc*ties. The Constrtuent Soc*kn"es of the Federation in 2022 are

member5 01 the ExeoJtwe Committee. FEBS Council meets once a year al the annual FEBS Congress. Th¢
Council elects members ol the FEBS ExèculNe Commrttee for three-year term5 (except the Chair and Vice-
Ch¥ir posr(ionsl. as well as ordinary mèmbets ofthe FE8S Commrttees and Working Group5 (delegated specific
areas of FEBS wofkl for four-￿ar terms, in a secret ballot. The v￿-ChaIr of the Execulwe Committee, who

The first call for this new progrem was wAde in June 21r21. This award is intended for early-career 5¢ienb"5ts who
have been estsblished in a salaried capacty in a host insbtution of a FE8S Constrtuènt Society as a Principal
Inve5ts'gator IPII for al kast one year. The Award is endowed %Mth a É100,000 grant for 3 years to be used
exdusivèly for purchasing consumabl•lequiprrenL In 2022. 16 eligible applications were reeeNed and 10 ￿r+

Ukrainian Short-Term Fellowships IUSTsl'. thest were introduced in sprin9 2022 to help seiènli5ts in or
displaced from Ukrainè. They support visits to a host laboiatory for up to 4 months. The decision for acceptance
is given rapKlly- usually wrthin 3 week5 01 applying. 10 USTS were awarded in 2022, the majority of them for a 4
monlh period. and OttaSK)nally for 3 months.

The annual FEBS Congress is overseen by the FEBS Congre55 Counsellor (who, in 2022, was Prof. Miguel A.
De la Rosal, joinyy with the Secretary General Ivtho. in 2022. was Prof. vaclav Paees. The 46th FEBS Congress
was held jointty wrth IUBMB and PABMB, as one singte global event named Thè B￿Cherr￿Stry Global Summit,
which took place from 9th to 14th July 2022 in Lisbon, Porbjgal and was hosted by the Portug4Jese Biochemical
Society ISPBI. The Congre55 btd was accepted in a vote by the FEBS Council at their meeting in 2018 an¢J was
due to be hekl in 2021. but, due to the ongthng Cov1￿19 pandern￿. the CorMJress was postponed to 2022.

èmployees work on the joumals. The increase ts due mainly to an increase in joumal payroll costs.

In 2016 FEBS reviewed its investments and the Finance Corrmrtt¢e deuded to hohl a tent1er for the
management of the inveslrrents of FEBS. JP Morgan Wd5 the successful tenderer after an intensive se￿CtIon
process. The tenderwas conducted by the Finance ConYNtlee, plus the Chair of the Fellowship Committee, with
the assistsnce of an independent investment con5uttant. By 31 0ecembeT 2017 the investment portfolio had

in September 2018 requiThng their grant holders to publish only in full open access journals from 2021. From
2024 all publication in¢orre voll transition towar¢Js fvll Open Access. The FEBS Publications Comffittee has
reviewed its consequences and made a strategic plan on howioumals ean adapt to new publishing requirements
of Plan S 5UPPOrted authors.
Return from investments
Up until the end of 2017 FEBS followed a standard inve5trrenl policy wilh investment in 30% bonds and 70%
eqU￿"eS. Since Tnoving the InveSt￿￿nt management to JP Morgan, FE8S ha$ made $omè changes to its policy
