The charity works closely with OSCAR foundation - a not for profit organisation registered in India. However, the two organisations are not under common control and have no legal ties.

Summary of the objectives of the charity as set out in its governing document (Our Purpose)

To act as a resource for young people up to the age of 25 living in India, by providing advice and assistance and organising educational and other activities as a means of (a) advancing in life and helping young people by developing their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature and responsible individuals, (b) advancing education, (c) relieving unemployment and (d) providing recreational and leisure time activity in the interest of social welfare for people living in the area of benefit who have need by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, poverty or social and economic circumstances, with a view to improving the conditions of life of such persons.

Governance is exercised by a board of 7 Trustees who have experience and knowledge of the charity and football for good sector, governance, safeguarding and fundraising. The day-to-day management of the charity is handled by the trustees and a voluntary group of advisory board members. The Trustees are directors of the company.

OSCAR India raises funds in the UK to support the development of sports and education projects in India delivered by Oscar Foundation a totally separate NGO based in Mumbai, with its own governance structure and Board.

The Trustees and volunteers from the UK regularly visit India to train up and support young people from OSCAR Foundation and other partner organisations to become young leaders and to help them to develop their sports and education programmes. As part of the training programme, coaching equipment and resources are supplied to the young leaders and partner organisations.

Once trained, the young leaders act as role models in their communities and deliver regular sports, life skills and education sessions in their local communities under the guidance of the organisation they are affiliated to.

Additional details of objectives and activities

In making decisions about activities undertaken by the charity the Trustees

have taken due regard of the requirement for them to be of public benefit.

Summary of the main activities of the charity during the year 2022/23 to carry out its charitable purposes for the public benefit

As we moved to ‘living with Covid’ both in the UK and India, the teams were able to resume more normal programme activities and start to plan for future fundraising and beneficiary activities with more certainty. It also meant that visits to and from India were possible again so the year saw two Trustees make self funded trips, visiting the projects in Mumbai and Karnataka and Ashok Rathod, CEO of Oscar Foundation visited the UK in May 22.

We were delighted to continue to work with HRH Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh as our patron and that she was able to support a fundraising event in person in May to coincide with Ashok’s visit.

Our Fundraising Manager was able to visit India in January 2023 as part of the preparation for the Schools Tour 2023 and this visit included a wonderful reunion for young people who had been on our UK Schools Tours in 2015, 2016 and 2019 as well as those who had travelled to international competitions such as the Danna Cup. This reunion allowed us and the Indian Team to see the positive impact that participating in these trips has had on the young people.

The UK Board met regularly both online and in person and were joined via Zoom by members of the Indian team to provide updates as needed.

Football and Education programmes including Learning Hubs (formerly Digital Learning Centres)

As well as getting back out on the ground in Mumbai and Karnataka, 2022 / 23 saw the Oscar Foundation team in India planning expansion of their projects to both Daman and Rajasthan. Across the football, education and young leader programmes over 5400 children and young people took part, an increase of over 1700 participants over 2021/22 numbers. Within the football programmes we have a gender ratio of 70-30 boys to girls which is lower than pre-pandemic c60-40, so this is an area the team are actively working on. We continue to raise money for gender programmes that support the work of the team in India to encourage girls participation through working with girls, boys and parents.

UK fundraising and Trustee time has been committed to supporting these

very successful core Oscar programmes and support the team in India particularly around curriculum development, engaging with Manchester City Football Club and other long term supporters and monitoring and evaluation.

UK donations have continued to support the physical learning spaces in low income communities that Oscar Foundation runs in the greater Mumbai area. These have evolved from being focused as Digital Learning Centres to broadening the offer to include increased signposting and support to children and young people around their education. In some centres mothers of beneficiaries are being offered digital skills training too. We were particularly grateful to Heathfield school whose fundraising went towards the salary of a teacher at one of the Hubs.

The Oscar Foundation team have been developing the education programme through the use of tablet devices loaded with software that allows the children and young people to develop their Maths, Hindi and English skills. Four UK donors supported the pilot phase of this programme.

Child Sponsorship

Child Sponsorship continues to be a core programme for us with 120 (vs 102 at end of 2021/22) children now being sponsored including 12 with disabilities by one donor. Following a review with the Oscar Foundation Team in India, we agreed that whilst the majority of the money from child sponsorship will go towards the core Oscar Foundation Football and Education programmes, c£60 per annum will now go into a bank account set up in the name of each child that can only be spent on their education. The UK Board is satisfied with the governance of this by the Indian team to ensure that the money is only used for this purpose.

This year saw the start of offering child sponsorship opportunities to those outside the UK, particularly in the USA via Global Giving. We have had 5 children sponsored via this route.

Once again our move to payment by direct debit has ensured very little attrition of sponsors during the year and child sponsorship now accounting for 25% of the total funds raised.

UK Schools Tour 2023

In June 22 the Board agreed that we would go ahead with a UK Schools Tour in October 2023. This will see 16 young people from India (8 girls and 8 boys from Mumbai and Karnataka programmes) travel to the UK to experience a two week education, football and cultural tour of schools within the UK. A number of schools who have hosted on previous tours are participating again along with new schools. Each school will raise at least £10k as well as hosting the team for a number of nights.

To mitigate risk and ensure cash flow both in the UK and for Oscar Foundation in India, for this Tour the participating schools have fundraised ahead of the tour which has been very successful.

International Young Leaders Programme

To support fundraising and logistics on the schools tour we have an OSCAR International Young Leaders programme. This provides a forum for young people from the UK schools that the indian young people visit, who want to be more involved in raising funds and developing as a young leader. In 2022/23 once again a number of the International Young Leaders took on physical challenges to raise money for Oscar.

Fund Raising

Despite the legacy of Covid we have seen our revenue (donations excluding gift aid) grow year on year from £111k in 2020/1 to £143k in 2021/2 and £163k in 2022/3. We have increased the breadth of our donor base with our 2022/23 revenue coming from individual donors and ‘giving sites’ including Amazon, CAF, Just Giving, Global Giving as well as event sponsorship by corporate donors. We are very grateful to the 9 donors who gave more than £5k.

In 2022/3:

Donations from the USA via Global Giving have continued to grow and the UK and Oscar Foundation Teams are now exploring the possibility of having a separate US Charity to continue this expansion. The Board would like to make a special mention for Lucinda Sowerbutts, whose energy and dedication leading our fundraising in the UK and US as well as supporting the fundraising team in India have built a loyal donor base and enabled the growth in funds to our beneficiaries.

Advice & Skills

UK based Trustees and volunteers use their skills and expertise to help build capacity in the Indian team to support quality delivery of programmes in India. Over the year UK Trustees continued to advise on Monitoring and Evaluation, Safeguarding, Football and Lifeskills content and strategic plans both in person on their visits or via online meetings and calls.

Trustee Team

Andrew Gauntlett stepped down. No new Trustees were appointed.

Looking forward to 2023

2023 will see our first schools tour since Covid in October and we will welcome Ashok Rathod CEO of Oscar Foundation in May 23 to carry out a pre-Tour visit to many of the schools to encourage further fundraising. This will also be an opportunity for us to engage with new potential Corporate donors and for him to attend our first fundraising Ball, along with our Patron HRH Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh on May 19th in London. A hardworking and high profile committee of Oscar supporters have been working to make the latter successful.

In recognition of our brilliant fundraising resource now being at capacity we have gone out to ‘market’ to seek a new Trustee with Fundraising experience to help guide the Board in looking at ways to expand our fundraising efforts which will in turn allow us to support Oscar Foundation’s growth ambitions and programme expansions into new geographies in India.

The Board recognises that the Fundraising environment will continue to be challenging due to the continued cost of living crisis and other natural and man made disasters that are rightly drawing funding to them.

Brief statement of the charity's policy on reserves:

In 2020 the charity implemented a formal reserves policy and the agreed reserves funds are clearly shown as a separate balance sheet item and require Board approval to be accessed for the specific exceptions outlined in the policy. This policy was maintained during 2022/23.

Details of any funds materially in deficit: None

The Trustees / Directors declare that they have approved the Trustees' and Directors' Report above.

Debtors (including trade debtors and loans receivable) are measured on initial Debtors recognition at settlement amount after any trade discounts or amount advanced by the charity. Subsequently, they are measured at the cash or other consideration expected to be received.

The charity has investments which it holds for resale or pending their sale and cash and cash equivalents with a maturity date less than one year. These include cash on deposit Current asset investments and cash equivalents with a maturity of loss than one year held for investment purposes rather than to meet short-term cash commitments as they fall due.

They are valued at fair value except where they qualify as basic financial instruments.
