Members

Members of the church who are willing to express their formal commitment of belonging to Unlimited can sign up as legal members.

In order to become a member, they need to agree to the following, which we believe are the core marks of belonging to the church:

I am baptised and committed to growing as a disciple of Christ
I am in full agreement with Unlimited's vision & values
I will attend regularly
I will play an active part in serving this vision and values
I will give financially to support the work of the church

Membership has dropped from 20, this followed a further review of the membership and is due to people moving away and signing up to become a Friend of Unlimited. We have had new students come to Unlimited who are in the process of becoming members.

Structure, Governance and Management Governing Document

During 2020 Unlimited Church become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and submitted a new governing document which was approved by the previous directors and members.

Recruitment and Appointment of Trustees

Trustees (leaders) are voted in at the Annual Meeting by the members for a period of 3 years. At the AGM, at least one third of the leadership will step down in order to ensure consistency and in line with the company's statutes.

Leadership/Director Meetings

The trustees/leaders meet on a monthly basis.

Trustee Induction and Training

All trustees receive an induction pack and safeguarding training. They also undertake specific training where appropriate.

Financial and Administrative Risk Management

The trustees seek to maintain a broad base of funding sources, including grants, donations and payments for services rendered. Budgets are put in place at the beginning of the year in order to restrict spending in each area, and these budgets must be adhered to unless agreed at a leadership meeting. By implementing effective and tight cost controls and by providing ongoing financial management information, the financial risk to the charity is kept to a minimum.Trustees' meetings are held monthly, and at every meeting the financial position of the company is briefly reviewed.

Public Benefit

The trustees of Unlimited Church in 2021, to the best of their knowledge, complied with their duty to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit as published by the Charity Commission, as they exercised their powers and duties. They have also been mindful of any risks to which Unlimited Church is exposed and sought to address them.

Objectives and Activities

Unlimited Church's purpose as a charitable company is to promote:

1.the Christian faith as part of the Church of England and in accordance with the values and tenets of the Anglican Communion summarised in resolution 11 of the third Lambeth conference following the Chicago-Lambeth quadrilateral namely:

(i)the Holy Scripture of the Old and New Testaments as "containing all things necessary to salvation" and as being the rule and ultimate standard of faith;

(ii)the Apostles' Creed, as the baptismal symbol; and the Nicene creed, as the sufficient statement of the Christian faith;

(iii)the two sacraments ordained by Christ himself - baptism and the supper of the Lord - ministered with unfailing use of Christ's words of institution, and of the elements ordained by him; (iv)the historic episcopate, locally adapted in the methods of its administration to the varying needs of the nations and peoples called of God into the unity of his church and in particular to establish and nurture a church which exists primarily to reach and disciple young people who are beyond the reach of established patterns of church.

2.the relief of financial hardship by making grants of money or providing or paying for items, services or facilities
3.the relief of sickness and the preservation of health by such means as the directors may determine
4.the advancement of education and training.

Review of the Year's Activities

Vicar's Report

The pandemic has had a huge effect on everyone. As leader of a church during this time I have been faced with those who would like to carry on as normal, and those who are much more cautious due to shielding etc. To find a way through has been challenging but Unlimited has worked hard to seek God and pastorally care for those in our church while still attempting to reach out to the unchurched young people of Exeter. We have had to learn to do church differently and we have grown so much in the process!

Going online was tricky for us as most of our congregation had returned home during the various lockdowns and were touching base with their home churches along with their families. To stay connected the staff team and small group leaders ensured that each member of church was contacted on a regular basis and many of the people really appreciated this. We sent out care packages to all with gifts of chocolate and tea and words of encouragement from the Bible. As leader it was great to see the team come together and find different ways of reaching church. We were given access to the Cathedral to welcome the many college students who were continuing to come into the city to study but had nowhere to go during their real times. This was appreciated by a few who found the reflective areas helpful to work through and chat to our volunteers. We offered deliveries of cake and toasties to newly arrived Uni students who were locked down in their flats with strangers, opened our buildings for night cafe when we were able.

The building was made COVID safe and people were asked to wear masks, it was very difficult not being able to offer coffee and cake as hospitality is part of our DNA and we have welcomed being able to reintroduce this along with eating a meal together on Thursday evenings.

Communion has returned on Wednesday mornings and this is our biggest area of growth with two new members joining from this service.

We have continued to work closely with the local council and was part of the central government bid for finance under the Safer Central Exeter banner. We were awarded money to help buy a coffee van and given access to both Bury Meadows and Northern Hay to help reach out to young people and address some of the anti social behaviour happening there.

We continue to give thanks to God for all he is doing in Exeter and Unlimited continues to be a part of his work here

Updates

Safeguarding

Jo Kirkcaldy stepped down as safeguarding lead in September and Sophie Squance was appointed in her place. There have been no safeguarding issues other than engaging with members who may be more vulnerable due to the previous years challenges with Covid. Members have gone through the DBS checks where necessary and thankfully there was not the back log we were expecting.

Our Team

Helen Sherlock: Vicar

Helen was curate at Unlimited but during 2021 took over as leader/vicar following the departure of James and Liz as the “original” leaders in May 2021. Helen continues in her role as Governor at St Luke’s Secondary School and an active member of various groups within Exeter.

Izzi Greenwood: Administrator

Izzi's role as administrator hasn't massively changed in the past year, apart from adapting to COVID and trying to organise and communicate effectively. She has been working from home throughout the pandemic, which has been a real challenge but as a church have risen collectively to it.

Heidi Budden: Ministry Intern

In September 2021 I began my role as Ministry Intern at Unlimited, with a focus on both internal and external ministries in addition to assisting with some administrative and practical responsibilities. I have been able to build upon my experience in teaching and leading whilst also being able to increase my pastoral responsibilities. The majority of my time however, has been invested into our outreach- initially Hub Cafe and latterly the Coffee Trailer. An exciting area of ministry I have been able to start has been Shine, our young girls Youth Group, which started as a fortnightly gathering and has recently become a weekly event due to popular demand! In addition to building relationships with young girls who have little engagement opportunities elsewhere, we have also been able to talk about various topics that affect them in their day to day lives, and to explore what the Bible is and how we can use it together. I am very fortunate to have an amazing team behind me for Shine, and it has been exciting to witness growth for Unlimited in this area.

STATEMENT OF TRUSTEES RESPONSIBILITIES

The trustees are responsible for preparing the Report of the Trustees and financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (UK Generally Accepted Accounting Practice)

Charity law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charity for that period. in prepating those financial statements the trustees are required to

select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
observe methods and principles in the Charity SORP
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charitable company will continue in business.

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charitable company and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the asssets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

Independent Examiners Report to the Trustees of Unlimited Church

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the company for the year ended 31 December 2021.

Respective Responsibilities of trustee and examiner

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

Examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act;
to follow the procedures laid down in the general directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act; and
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner's report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the account present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner's statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

1 which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
To keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; and
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charites Act

have not been met; or

2 to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1 Accounting policies

Basis of preparation

The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practivce applicable to Charities preparing accounts in accordance with FRS 102, The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (as applied to small entities by section 1A of the standard). The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention

Income

All income is recognised in the Statement of FInancial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, itis probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Tangible fixed assets

Tangible fixed assets are measured at cost less accumulative depreciation and any accumulative impairment losses. Depreciation is provided on all tangible fixed assets, other than freehold land, at rates calculated to write off the cost, less estimated residual value, of each asset evenly over its expected useful life, as follows:

The company is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.

Fund accounting

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for the particular restricted purposes.

Pensions

Contributions to defined contribution plans are expensed in the period to which they relate.

Building Improvements

Grant funding towards improving the existing Mary Arches church building to make it more suitable for the mission of the church

Vicar's Discretionary Fund

Honorariums received or work done by the vicar outside of Unlimited Church. This funding can be used at the vicar's discretion to support the growth of the church, its leaders and members.

Project Coffee

A new initiative to help reach the young people of Exeter. We are looking at the option of providing a facility that will enable interaction through the supply of refreshments to those who attend Exeter College and other young people who live in or visit Exeter. We are looking to work alongside other stakeholders to help and support the needs of those under 25.
