Structure, governance and management
The charity is a company limited by guarantee and was formed on 14th August 2012. It is governed by a memorandum and articles of association adopted on 28th September 2012. The liability of the members in the event of the company being wound up is limited to a sum not exceeding £1. The trustees of the charity are also the directors for the purposes of company law and are appointed by the members at the AGM. The Director has responsibility for the daily management of the charity, as delegated by the trustees.
The trustees are appointed and are accountable to Faiths Forum's Council which is made up of 33 Council Members, representing the 9 main faith traditions in London and co-opted members from other faith based organisations.

Objectives and activities
The Objects of the Charity are the promotion of religious harmony for the public benefit by:
(a) to advance understanding of religious faith and, in particular, of the nine world faiths: Bahá'í faith; Buddhism; Christianity; Hinduism; Islam; Jainism; Judaism; Sikhism and Zoroastrianism;
(b) to promote awareness of the contribution of religious faith and faiths, in particular to promote understanding of the contribution of religious faiths to community life within Greater London and outside of London; and
(c) to promote mutual understanding, collaboration and good relations between faith communities and wider society, to provide a platform for faith communities to engage with public bodies and businesses; and.
(d) to be a centre for research, information, debate, discussion and cross-sector engagement on issues relating to regional policy and the concerns of London's faith groups as well as faith groups outside of London; and
(e) to facilitate faith community organisations in developing expertise in social policy areas, forming networks and partnerships and being able to initiate civic engagement on issues of concern to them.

Achievements and performance
The Faiths Forum for London was founded in 2012 with the objective of promoting mutual understanding, collaboration and good relations between faith communities and wider society. We provide platforms and channels for communication between faith communities, regional authorities, business and educational institutions. Faiths Forum is governed by a Council of 29 faith leaders from nine faith traditions, who meet regularly to discuss issues facing London and the religious groups within it. During our meetings we invite leaders from public authorities, NGOs and the media to engage with us and share ideas on how we can tackle the issues. We proactively seek opportunities to work cohesively with such groups to further our shared goals. We organise conferences and seminars that engage with specific issues of common interest and concern, to upskill all the faith communities in areas important to them.
The Faiths Forum projects and activities, highlight the contributions that different faiths have made in promoting community cohesion between the financial year of April 2021 - March 2022.
The Strengthening Faith Institutions (SFI):
The Forum is a consortium member of the Strengthening Faith Institutions (SFI) programme, funded by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) formerly known as the Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). Faith institutions have a unique role in building community cohesion; they provide moral leadership, influence sizable congregations, handle large budgets, educate children and operate large premises. The forum supports SFI by providing the tools and training to help faith organisations face the challenges of today’s society which include engaging with women and young people, sharing best practice, and using social media effectively. The principal aim of SFI is to support faith institutions in creating stronger, healthier, integrated, and accessible places of worship across England for everyone.
The Forum supported SFI focusing on faith institutions in London with organisational health-checks and bespoke action plans. We also promoted faith institution excellence by providing various workshops including but not limited to:

Supporting Faith Institutions implement public health guidelines;

Hate crime - safety and security seminars;

Safeguarding in Faith Supplementary School course;

Places of Worship Security Scheme Awareness;

Grant-Support workshops;

Designated Safeguarding Lead for Women in Places of Worship training;

First Aid training for Women in Places of Worship;

Working with the charity commission to register new charities;

Worked with the Mayor's Office focusing on security briefings.
London faith centres were trained as designated safeguarding and/or health and safety lead officers. Over the years, we’ve ensured women’s participation has increased in the workshops and activities we conduct.

Community Champion
Religious leaders, faith-based organisations, and faith communities played a major role in saving lives and reducing illness related to COVID-19. They were and are a primary source of support, comfort, guidance, and direct health care and social service, for the communities they serve. With support from the Forum, faith leaders and faith communities shared health information to protect their own members and wider communities, which was more accepted than from other sources. They provided pastoral and spiritual support during public health emergencies and other health challenges and advocated for the needs of vulnerable populations. Vaccine safety awareness webinars were organised along with vaccination drives in partnerships with grassroots community organisations and local authorities. Furthermore, support for the COVID booster awareness program was a large focus in 2022. This work continued throughout 2021-2022.
Public Health Awareness
As part of the Forum's Mental Health work, we partnered with Public Health England, the Mayor of London, NHS, and Good Thinking to organise an event titled Faith Leaders Mental Health Support on 19 May 2022 to provide mental health support training for Faith Leaders in partnership to discuss faith leaders’ roles in supporting the mental health of their communities.
On 30 June 2022, we organised an event with Public Health England to conduct an interfaith focus group discussing health inequalities and the impact of Covid-19. The event brought a vast number of people from a range of multiple faith and ethnic backgrounds to advise on health inequalities that they have faced.
Domestic Abuse Awareness
Faith Leaders are in an ideal position to help those in their congregations who are affected by domestic abuse. They can initiate open conversations about abuse and religious faith, challenge harmful customs and traditions, and help people to overcome misinterpretations of religious teachings that claim that abuse is ever acceptable.
The #FaithsAgainstDomesticAbuse campaign was launched to highlight the work of specialist domestic violence organisations who support victims from faith and BAME backgrounds with little or no support from central government. The Forum and Back in Control Consultancy worked in partnership to enhance the awareness of domestic abuse among Faith Leaders and within faith communities, and offered bespoke Awareness Training for faith leaders, to help them gain an understanding of the challenges and barriers facing people of faith experiencing domestic violence or abuse.
The training was delivered by Veronica Simpson, CEO Back In Control Consultancy (BiCC) which provided advocacy, practical and emotional support for those that were or have been affected by domestic violence or abuse.
The training provided faith leaders with an insight into:

How to spot the warning signs;

Provided an understanding of the the impact on the abused, the abuser and children who witness abuse;

Provided and gave individuals pointers on how they can offer support;

Cities Faith and Community Forum
Faith institutions have a unique role in leveraging social capital in communities to address key city priorities but also to support marginalised communities. They can be effective in tackling hate crime and extremism and work towards improving social cohesion. They are embedded in communities and can therefore channel resources to support city priorities.
The Cities Faith and Community Forum was launched in February 2019; it combined the strengths of key leaders in Europe and the UK and was in a strong position to act as a bridge between governments and citizens. Our vision was to promote strategic faith and community collaboration across and between major cities in the UK and Europe. Our focus was strategic intervention, particularly focusing on issues and challenges that affect faith communities in cities, such as poverty, mental health, literacy, education, security, homelessness, and the environment.
Civic and Democracy Leadership Programme
The Forum launched its fourth Leadership and Democracy Week campaign that took place on 16-20 August 2021. It encompassed various workshops to enhance and expand young people’s arsenal of skills whilst also addressing issues critical to society. 25 university students and graduates developed their leadership skills from experts in their field and expressed their ideas to senior members of government.
The inaugural National Democracy Week, initiated by the Cabinet office and the National Democracy Week Council and various members across the nation, was a weeklong celebration of our democracy and coincided with celebrating the centenary of women getting the right to vote. The aim of the week was to encourage young people who are often the most apathetic towards politics, and who feel like they do not have a voice to learn more about democracy, and to encourage them to get involved in the democratic process.
The programmes made a difference and gave young people a chance to learn vital leadership skills, get expert insights from high level dignitaries and experts in their field. The week was based around the idea of how to better integrate communities which are often isolated from politics and how to get them involved with the political process and help their cause.
Safety and Security
The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC), the Community Security Trust (CST), and The Forum conducted an online webinar titled Event Security for Places of Worship on 09 June 2021. This webinar introduced tried and tested measures for keeping large groups of people safe when hosting indoor and outdoor events. The program also introduced the latest safety and security funding

opportunities for physical security measures for places of worship through the Government’s Places of Worship Protective Security Funding Scheme.
On the fourth anniversary of the Finsbury Park terror attack on 19 June 2021 the Forum held an event remembering Makram Ali and the innocent people who were injured as a result of this despicable attack. We remembered that London is a large and diverse city from various faiths and backgrounds that have the right to practice our religion without fear, hate or discrimination. This online event in solidarity the victims, brought the community together, especially those that have been directly affected by hate and terror.
Youth Engagement
The Forum organised events focusing on Black and Minority Ethnic young people such as 5-a-side interfaith football matches along with free lunch for individuals between the ages of 18-25. During the lunch, participants discussed the challenges they faced post-lockdown and their thoughts on the COVID Vaccine. This project was supported by the Mayor of London, NHS & Public Health England. Further 5-a-side interfaith football matches took place throughout the year in the London Borough of Southwark in partnership with multiple local community and faith organisations.
Kickstarters

Environmentalism, Climate Action, and Awareness
Building on the years of environmental work that the Forum has undertaken via its interfaith tree planting initiative events were organised in the year starting with a five-part webinar series titled ‘Where Nature Meets Faith’ that started in May 2021. This was followed by Faith Guided Walks with the Royal Parks organised on 21 October 2021, 18 November 2021, and 16 December 2021.
The Forum also hosted a series of podcasts referred to as the “Interfaith Maverick Podcast Series” with high-level environmentalists in the run-up to & following COP26. An event was also hosted on clubhouse (the social media platform) during COP26 to discuss the role of faith in climate responses. A member of staff from the Forum attended the conference in Glasgow and live tweeted public events that they attend. COP26 took place from 1-3 November.
Peer Networks
Covid-19 had a huge impact on small, medium and large businesses in every sector. Alongside immediate financial support from the government and funders, there was a pressing need to adapt, become resilient and adopt new approaches. The Forum participated in running a peer-to-peer programme for ethnic minority businesses in partnership with the Greater London Authority and the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy for businesses to receive tangible insights, find solutions and be held accountable by a supportive group of peers who are experiencing similar

challenges or opportunities. The programme empowered entrepreneurs from multiple minority ethnic and faith community backgrounds to gain confidence in their business survival and resilience, as well as develop leadership and management abilities, with the support of a new network. Peer Networks is a national peer-to-peer networking programme for subject matter expert leaders that want to grow and develop their organisation for future success.
Through interactive action learning, we enabled business leaders to discuss their own challenges, gain and reflect on valuable feedback and implement practical solutions to overcome them. From finance and HR to sales, marketing and more, our expert facilitators supported a trusted network to help participants to build and strengthen their business and improve its overall performance.
Uyghur & Freedom of Religion and Belief (FoRB) Webinars
The Forum hosted a webinar titled “The Uyghur Crisis: A Deeper Look” that looked to deepen peoples understanding of the developing situation in two ways. Firstly, it looked at how policy discussions and responses to this live situation have developed since the past November. Secondly, it explored what is being lost in terms of the Uyghur culture, and how this cultural erasure is taking place. Following this, it hosted a second webinar titled “The Current Status of the FoRB Around the World: Challenges and Moving Forward” on 24th June 2021. This webinar covered the overall topic of FoRB exploring: the nature and implementation of FoRB as a human right, the major challenges and current state of FoRB around the world, and how citizens and policymakers can engage in FoRB interventions.
Coalition for Religious Equality and Inclusive Development (CREID)
The Director of the Forum was invited to participate in the Coalition for Religious Equality and Inclusive Development (CREID). CREID is convened by the Institute of Development Studies and was launched in 2018. Current strategic partners include: the Al-Khoei Foundation, Minority Rights Group and Refcemi. CREID also works with partners around the world, particularly in the program's countries of focus (Egypt, India, Iraq, Nigeria and Pakistan).
The Forum’s Director participated in a project that developed an innovative and accessible e-learning course for Iraqi primary schools with a Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) element, responding to post- conflict needs, as well as addressing challenges to education amid COVID19. It was based on the first phase of the RE reform in Iraq project, where a pro-pluralism Islamic Education curriculum was developed to be implemented in Iraqi primary schools.
Dream it, Do it
The Dream it, Do it programme consisted of an array of workshop that educated girls from Jewish and Islamic faith schools on how to create and deliver their own local social action campaigns. The project educated participants on 4 key areas: Building a campaign, Fundraising, Video editing and Graphic design. The programme consisted of a three-month long mentorship scheme, finishing on a final day that involved the girls pitching their project to a group of judges in an attempt to secure funding. The activity was intended to be an opportunity for participants to increase their skills, engage in social action and interact with one another promoting long-lasting interfaith friendships.

Community Events
Throughout the year the Forum ran community building events, a select few are:
21 April 2021 - ‘An Introduction into Immigration Detention’ was a free Zoom webinar designed to provide introductory education and increase awareness and engagement of faith communities with the critical issue of immigration detention. The event examined how immigration detention causes harm, what faith groups can do to challenge it and the potential for community-based alternatives to detention.
09 September 2021 - ‘Supporting Afghan Refugees in the UK Online Conference’ was an online conference organised in partnership with the Afghan and Central Asian Association (ACAA), Paiwand and the International Centre for Integration and Cohesion (ICIC). This conference was organised as a quick response in reaction to the events following the rise to power of the Taliban which saw the UK accept thousands of Afghan refugees and relocations. The majority of these refugees and relocated families were brought to the UK out of fear for their lives in Afghanistan, largely due to their cooperation with British personnel. A smaller number were airlifted haphazardly. These refugees face numerous immediate challenges regarding housing, employment, integration and mental health.
06 November 2021 - ‘Tower Hamlets Street Party’ was a two part community event that was held in the Borough of Tower Hamlets in partnership with the Mayor of Tower Hamlets, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, and the International Centre for Integration and Cohesion (ICIC). The first was an interfaith dialogue event at the Christ Apostolic Church where around a dozen locals from the local area attended to discuss various social issues, focusing on inter-community dialogue, in the postpandemic era. The second event was a street party held outside the local church and mosque where approximately 200 people from the local area came to enjoy food and the company of their neighbours. The event was very well received from locals especially in the context of loneliness experienced during the pandemic and lockdown period.
Financial review
The Forum has continued to plan and develop its services, widening its publicity through social media and events. With the aid of sound financial management and the support of our Trustees, Council Members and Patron, the Forum has achieved a satisfactory outcome for the year, with sufficient resources to continue to expand activities in the forthcoming year.
Reserves Policy
Following consultation with experts and the board of Trustees it has been decided that the Charity's policy on reserves is to maintain adequate unrestricted/restricted funds to cover up to 6 months of operating costs (which includes admin HR and payroll) in the instance of incoming funds fall short.
The amount that is considered adequate to cover the unrestricted/restricted expenditure for the reserve target is £151,100. The Charity considers the levels of reserves to be sufficient.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the financial statements of Faiths Forum For London ('the charity') for the year ended 31 March 2022.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the trustees of the company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act’).
Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the 2011 Act’). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.
Independent examiner's statement
Since the charity’s gross income exceeded £250,000 your examiner must be a member of a body listed in section 145 of the 2011 Act. I confirm that I am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, which is one of the listed bodies.
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:

accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or

the financial statements do not accord with those records; or
-
the financial statements do not comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or
-
the financial statements have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102).
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Notes to the Financial Statements
Year ended 31 March 2022
1. General information
The charity is a public benefit entity and a private company limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales and a registered charity in England and Wales. The address of the registered office is 77-79 Charlotte Street, London, W1T 4PW.
2. Statement of compliance
These financial statements have been prepared in compliance with FRS 102, 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and the Republic of Ireland', the Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (Charities SORP (FRS 102)) and the Companies Act 2006.
3. Accounting policies
Basis of preparation
The financial statements have been prepared on the historical cost basis, as modified by the revaluation of certain financial assets and liabilities and investment properties measured at fair value through income or expenditure.
The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the entity.
Going concern
There are no material uncertainties about the charity's ability to continue.
Judgements and key sources of estimation uncertainty
In the application of the charity's accounting policies, the Trustees are required to make judgements, estimates and assumptions about the carrying amount of assets and liabilities that are not readily apparent from other sources. The estimates and associated assumptions are based on historical experience and other factors that are considered to be relevant. Actual results may differ from these estimates.
The estimates and underlying assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting estimates are recognised in the period in which the estimate is revised where the revision affects only that period, or in the period of the revision and future periods where the revision affects both current and future periods.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees to further any of the charity's purposes.
Designated funds are unrestricted funds earmarked by the trustees for particular future project or commitment.
Restricted funds are subjected to restrictions on their expenditure declared by the donor or through the terms of an appeal, and fall into one of two sub-classes: restricted income funds or endowment funds.

Incoming resources
All incoming resources are included in the statement of financial activities when entitlement has passed to the charity; it is probable that the economic benefits associated with the transaction will flow to the charity and the amount can be reliably measured. The following specific policies are applied to particular categories of income:
-
income from donations or grants is recognised when there is evidence of entitlement to the gift, receipt is probable and its amount can be measured reliably.
-
legacy income is recognised when receipt is probable and entitlement is established.
-
income from donated goods is measured at the fair value of the goods unless this is impractical to measure reliably, in which case the value is derived from the cost to the donor or the estimated resale value. Donated facilities and services are recognised in the accounts when received if the value can be reliably measured. No amounts are included for the contribution of general volunteers.
-
income from contracts for the supply of services is recognised with the delivery of the contracted service. This is classified as unrestricted funds unless there is a contractual requirement for it to be spent on a particular purpose and returned if unspent, in which case it may be regarded as restricted.
Resources expended
Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis as a liability is incurred. Expenditure includes any VAT which cannot be fully recovered, and is classified under headings of the statement of financial activities to which it relates:

expenditure on raising funds includes the costs of all fundraising activities, events, noncharitable trading activities, and the sale of donated goods.
-
expenditure on charitable activities includes all costs incurred by a charity in undertaking activities that further its charitable aims for the benefit of its beneficiaries, including those support costs and costs relating to the governance of the charity apportioned to charitable activities.
-
other expenditure includes all expenditure that is neither related to raising funds for the charity nor part of its expenditure on charitable activities.
All costs are allocated to expenditure categories reflecting the use of the resource. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs are apportioned between the activities they contribute to on a reasonable, justifiable and consistent basis.
Tangible assets
Tangible assets are initially recorded at cost, and subsequently stated at cost less any accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. Any tangible assets carried at revalued amounts are recorded at the fair value at the date of revaluation less any subsequent accumulated depreciation and subsequent accumulated impairment losses.

Tangible assets (continued)
An increase in the carrying amount of an asset as a result of a revaluation, is recognised in other recognised gains and losses, unless it reverses a charge for impairment that has previously been recognised as expenditure within the statement of financial activities. A decrease in the carrying amount of an asset as a result of revaluation, is recognised in other recognised gains and losses, except to which it offsets any previous revaluation gain, in which case the loss is shown within other recognised gains and losses on the statement of financial activities.
Depreciation
Depreciation is calculated so as to write off the cost or valuation of an asset, less its residual value, over the useful economic life of that asset as follows:

4. Limited by guarantee
The liability of Members is limited. Every Member promises, if the Charity is dissolved while he/she remains a Member or within one year after he/she ceases to be a member, to pay up to £1 towards:
·payment of those debts and liabilities of the Charity incurred before he/she ceased to be a member;

payment of the costs, charges and expenses of winding up; and
-
the adjustment of rights of contributors among themselves.
