A supplemental trust deed, approved by the trustees on 13 May 2019, restated the original trust deed and provided for an increase in the number of trustees from three to five. How the charity is constituted – Trust Trustee selection methods – the trustees are appointed or re-appointed annually after the Annual Meeting of Merton Council at which the Mayor is elected. There is an understanding that each year the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and the previous year’s Mayor will become Trustees. The appointments are noted by a meeting of the Council in June/July each year. The Trustees elect the Chair of the Trust Board at the first Trust Board meeting following Annual Council. ## **Objectives and activities** Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document The Trust Deed states that the charity's objects are any purposes currently recognised as charitable and any new charitable purposes which are similar to another charitable purpose. The purpose of the Trust is to collect and distribute charitable donations for the benefit of the residents of the borough. The focus will shift from year to year so that each year the Trust can support specific organisations and/or themes such as young people, sport, the arts etc. Each year the Mayor of Merton nominates a charity or charities for whom fundraising activities are carried out during the year to meet a specified 1 purpose for the benefit of the residents of Merton. Additional small donations may be made to local charities and or individuals. The Trustees consider the public benefit requirement prior to issuing funds to any organisation or individual. When providing financial donations the Trustees will in every event place specific stipulations as to the use of those funds to ensure that the use is in accordance with the charity’s objects and charitable purposes as well as complying with the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit. ## Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to ## these objects Fundraising activities undertaken over the past year were planned so that a wide range of people from Merton’s diverse local communities could participate, particularly those people who had not previously had any contact with the mayoralty. Councillor Brunt helped lead Merton out of the COVID-19 pandemic, his theme for the year focused on health, care and wellbeing. Councillor Brunt selected the Christian Care Association as the first of his two nominated charities. The association provides emotional support and practical help for people who have no recourse to public funds. His second charity was Marie Curie, the UK’s leading end-of-life charity. Marie Curie provides frontline nursing and hospice care, as well as a free support line for those coping will terminal illnesses. ## **Achievements and performance** (summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year) In the 2021/22 municipal period Councillor Brunt managed to return to face-toface meetings and began to host larger events such as fundraising meals and afternoon teas. ## Fundraising activities Fundraising highlights in the 2021/22 year included: - A virtual balloon race (April 2021) - A virtual raffle (May 2021) - Annual sponsored swim by Deputy Mayor, Cllr Edith Macauley – 50 lengths of the pool at David Lloyd Sports Club in Wimbledon. - Mayor’s Charity Cricket Match (September 20210 - Mayor’s Birthday Meal supported by the hospitality students from South - Thames/Merton College (November 2021) - Fundraising meal at Aya Lebanese Cuisine (February 2022) - Two afternoon tea and tours held at AFC Wimbledon and the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (March 2022) ## Community outreach 2 Silver Sunday: October saw Silver Sunday, when Councillor Brunt hosted a tea party at Tooting and Mitcham Community Sports Club. A delicious afternoon tea was served, accompanied by sparkling entertainment. The day was a fitting celebration of achievements by older residents, and a chance to share some amazing life stories. - Aside from his charity work, Councillor Brunt led the tributes to fallen servicemen and servicewomen on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, and he led citizenship ceremonies throughout the year as part of his civic duties. - With a focus on promoting community spirit as Merton recovered from the pandemic, Councillor Brunt championed testing and vaccination, and he visited more than half the schools in the borough to highlight how Merton could become a positive example for more local boroughs. - Engagements The Mayor has conducted approximately 300 engagements, which include 70 citizenship ceremonies and 30 school visits. ## - Grant making In the 2021/22 financial year the Trust made three grants totalling £36,500 to support local community organisations for the benefit of Merton residents: - **BAME Voice** (£500) for outstanding contributions made to the Black, Asian, Minority and Ethnic communities during the covid-19 pandemic. - **Merton & Morden Guild of Social Services** was awarded two payments totalling £19,000. A payment of £2,000 was made in September 2021 by Councillor Janice Howard (Mayor 2019/2020) from residual funds for invaluable support received from the Guild during her mayoral year. A payment of £17,000 was paid to the Guild in November 2021 by Councillor Sally Kenny (Mayor 2020/2021) as funds raised to support the Guilds offer of activities to older people. During the pandemic the Guild was very creative in offering bespoke assistance to their members with shopping, prescription and other wellbeing activities all whilst receiving very limited income and funding. - **Morden Little League** received £17,000 toward its services to young people by providing an outlet for health and wellness and encouraging the development of team spirit, self-discipline, and sportsmanship. These skills are integral to the development of young people. ## **Financial review** Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves:– All cash balances are held as unrestricted funds. All funds are held for the purpose of donations to the Mayor’s chosen charities or cover the costs of 3 further fundraising.
