Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes
of the charity as set out in
its governing document
Para 1.17 To further or benefit the residents of
Horden and the surrounding area without
distinction of sex, sexual orientation, race
or of political, religious or other opinions by
associating together the said residents and
the local authorities, voluntary and other
organisations in a common effort to
advance education and to provide facilities
in the interests of social welfare for
recreation, leisure time occupation with the
objective of improving the conditions of life
for the residents.
Such charitable purposes for the public
benefit as are exclusively charitable
according to the laws of England and
Wales as the Trustees may from time to
time determine.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to
those purposes for the
public benefit, in
particular, the activities,
projects or services
identified in the accounts.
Para 1.17 and 1.19 Over the last 12 months HCC secured a 3
year National Lottery Reaching
Communities grant to employ a Centre Co-
ordinator to support our Trustees and
volunteers in making more use of the
centre as a hub for the community and to
realise our vision of creating a centre for
regeneration in partnership with the wider
community, partners and volunteers.
Our target beneficiaries for year one was
500. Over the last 12 months 1,457
individuals have used the Centennial
Centre:

Ages 6-month to 15-years: 475

Ages 16-25 years: 163

Ages 26-49: 489

Aged 50 plus: 330
Activities included funding from Coalfields
Regeneration Trust (CRT) to open a

community cafe which runs weekly every Wednesday. We are pleased to see new faces coming into the centre alongside regular individuals that had been attending our warm space. We have started working with Learning Abilities who are delivering additional community café sessions within the centre; Feeding Abilities, every Friday and Saturday which involves adults with autism and learning disabilities, teaching cooking and employability skills. Learning Abilities are also planning to make use of the Centre’s other spaces and alongside the cafe to run events for the community such as a cinema group, bingo sessions and pop up markets. Monthly pie & peas was reintroduced and is well attended by local older residents as well as local care homes bringing residents. As well as a CRT grant, we were successful in obtaining grants from The Barbour Foundation towards Centre running costs. The CDCF sustainability fund approved a grant to cover the centres insurances, licences, accounts and wages. We made a successful application to the Co-op Community Fund to continue to provide financial assistance to the domino/bingo group wellbeing group. We continued to engage with residents through one-to-one interviews and in group settings for insight into their needs, concerns, and preferences and what is required going forward. Nourish Food School, healthy eating course on a budget, was highly successful. Positive feedback was received on the course and the venue with plans to repeat it in the near future. We are continuing to build on partnerships by hosting the monthly ‘Police and Communities Together’ (PACT) meetings which we feel is important to show the community our commitment to the regeneration of the area, giving all residents opportunity to attend and have chance to ask questions and bring up

concerns to the relevant authorities.
We continued to be part of East Durham
Trust IAG Partnership (Information &
Guidance) and we hosted some meetings
within the centre which has helped raise
awareness for partners on what we are
able to offer which opened the possibilities
of working together on future projects.
Over the last 12 months we have worked
on strengthening relationships with
residents and partners.
Boxlean increased their classes to four
public classes weekly and occasional one
to one sessions.
Horden Dog Training held two sessions
weekly, increased due to a busier building
and our promotion of the classes on social
media.
We are learning that by listening to what
our community needs and responding with
increased capacity is working well.
We are working more closely than ever with
partners and delivering activities jointly,
which enhances the services to the
community.
Our plans are for the coming year are:

To continue promoting our cafe with
the aim of becoming sustainable

Learn from what has gone well and
from what has not gone well.

To continue to work with centre
users to help promote their
activities.

To have more activity for older
residents, as this is what the
community has asked for.

To continue to grow our network
and partnership working.

To increase revenue for the centre
through increased hire.

To upgrade our cellar as a usable
space.

To redecorate and upgrade the
centre.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have

Charity Commission on

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 Horden Centennial Centre celebrated its
tenth anniversary with a very successful
partner event which was well attended by
the community.
Having secured National Lottery
Community Fund grant funding during the
year to employ a Centre Co-ordinator, we
now have the support and capacity to make
full use of the building as a venue for the
whole community, a Centre for
Regeneration.
Following the appointment of the Centre’s
new Co-ordinator and support from
partners with fundraising and a new
cleaner caretaker, we have been able to
invest in building maintenance and
improvements. We have also seen an
increase in activities, partnership working
and number of people using the Centennial
Centre.
We are pleased to have helped local
people access affordable food, exercise,
more social activities, help and support.
We increased our funding base with more
venue hire, grant funding and revenue from
the community café.
Next year with support from our Centre Co-
ordinator we are hoping to increase
volunteer numbers and their involvement in
the Centre. We also want to see our
management group and trustees grow and
develop as we look to create a more
sustainable organisation as we do and
deliver more for the local community.
We would like to thank all those involved in
Horden Centennial Centre and for
everything they do to make a difference for
the residents and communities we serve.
