Structure, governance and management

Horden Centennial Centre is a registered charity with a governing constitution adopted on 7[th] September 2012 as amended on 1[st] October 2012. The constitution sets out the aims

and objectives of the charity. The Trustees are responsible for the overall management and operation of the charity.

Trustees are elected at the Annual General Meeting and can be seconded at anytime throughout the year at an Ordinary Trustee Management Meeting.

Trustees take responsibility for the induction, support and management of new Trustees.

Objectives and activities

The Charity’s objective is to further or benefit the residents of Horden and the surrounding area by bringing together residents, local authorities, voluntary and other organisations in a common effort to provide facilities which advance education, provide facilities in the interests of social welfare, recreation, leisure and employability. All with the objective of improving life for residents.

Achievements and performance

During the year, Horden Centennial Centre recovered from the impact of Covid restrictions.

Regular activities were steadily reintroduced and partnership working re-established.

Weekly activities and events included coffee mornings, martial arts, (karate and ju-jitsu) and dog training classes.

Grant funding was secured from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust to deliver a new partnership project working with Horden based training organisation, Argus Europe CIC. Over the year a programme of training was offered to residents with Horden Centennial Centre as a base, meeting needs around employability, volunteers, wellbeing and life skills.

Additional grants were also secured as a result of the partnership work for activities including warm space drop-in for residents struggling with the cost of living.

Co-op grant funding paid for weekly Stay and Play sessions where parents and preschool children could meet and play together using our hall and café space.

Thanks to active involvement from new volunteers, we were able to try out new activities and involve more residents in using and developing our offer for the benefit of the wider community.

Other activities included exercise session with Evolve Fit, The Build Guild offering space for residents interested in hobbies and crafts to share skills and meet together, free Adult Learning through WEA courses and a number of social nights making use of the Centre bar, café space, hall and cinema.

Vintage clothes business, Thrifty Shades of Chic continued to hire a room at the Centre providing welcome venue hire and we hosted a number of parties, funerals and private functions during the year.

With increased capacity we were able to return to our long-held aim of recruiting a Centre Co-ordinator. An application to The National Lottery Community Fund was successfully made. A grant of £52,769 over three year will fund a Centre Co-ordinator going forward.

Significant challenges remain for the charity, not least meeting rising running and utility costs.

Planning for required maintenance, repairs and redecoration was begun during the year, with works and costs to be spread over the next 3-5 years.

We are very grateful to everyone who has had an input during the year and those volunteers whose commitment ensures our sustainability as a charity and community venue, a centre for regeneration at the heart of Horden.

Financial review

Horden Centennial Centre has a reserve policy which is kept under review which seeks to maintain a minimum level of reserves of approximately 12 months running costs. The Trustees recommend that the policy on reserves be reviewed annually in order to take into account the operating costs of the organization including increasing running costs and investment which will be required for maintenance, repair and redecoration.

The trustees regularly assess the risks to the organisation, particularly as we emerged from the disruption to the charity caused by COVID restrictions. Trustees are satisfied that systems and good governance are in place to mitigate risk in the medium term.

The Charity enjoyed an increase in grant income over the year, details of funders can be found in the financial statements as part of this report along with the statement of financial activities for the year.

Trustees were pleased to be in a sound financial position at the end of the year and were very grateful to our retiring Treasurer Mrs Audrey Hogarth for all she has done in ensuring the sound financial management of Horden Centennial Centre as we move into a new phase of growth and development.

Signed:
