Roshni Background

Roshni Sheffield Asian Women’s Resource Centre is a grassroots, community based, voluntary sector organisation that has been meeting the needs of the South Asian community in Sheffield since 1992. The women we support are of South Asian heritage and are often locked in poverty due to multiple barriers, including being immigrant and having poor educational backgrounds. Over 70% of the women we support are responsible for young children and the same percentage of women are either separated or divorced; many women have suffered domestic violence and culturally the women have been brought up with low self-worth and a dependent mind-set. As so many of our clients are raising families, our support makes a positive impact on the next generation, breaking the cycles of poverty and unfulfilled potential. As such, we provide a range of culturally specific services to address the multiple barriers that they face, with a view to improving their independence, health and well-being.

Roshni has expanded its bilingual counselling service this year and delivered support to 34 adult women over the year.

Over the Covid-19 pandemic, our staff have continued to deliver a blend of face to face and remote activities and services. We continued to run our drop-in sessions and appointments remotely via Zoom, WhatsApp was used along with Google classroom to deliver public health messages, run classes and provide ongoing moral support to our service users to help them get through the pandemic. It has been an extremely difficult period for the organisation, where we had to deal with the challenges of Covid-19 affecting clients and staff alike. Alongside this we saw a significant rise in the number of women asking for help because of the rise in incidents of Domestic Abuse.

Move More

Move More Empowered Communities aims to support more people to benefit from being active in their community, and understand what approaches are most likely to make this happen. Being active can mean many things to many people. Gardening, dancing, walking, or anything that involves a bit of movement. And, there are so many benefits; physical, social, immune, and mental. We are hoping to embed walking as part of the standard therapy and counselling sessions at Roshni - delivering ‘walk and talk’ sessions and are hoping to bring in volunteers to support this too.

Roshni Play Scheme & Work with Young Girls

Our play schemes this year were delivered earlier in the year over zoom, and then face to face as restrictions were eased. The play scheme was targeted at families that we know, who are marginalised, and who do not usually participate in activities taking place for children across the city. The scheme this year was delivered to 53 children from across the city ranging from the age of 6 to 13 years. During the Easter holidays we prepared activity packs for eligible children, which they collected, and then joined in with the group activities on the zoom platform. The children undertook Arts and Crafts activities to make cards and decorations for Ramadan, Easter and Eid. They were provided with a yoga mat and a qualified instructor was brought in to teach yoga that was suitable for children. Garden flower bulbs and strawberry plants were also distributed, and an outdoor gardening session was undertaken with the support of their parents, to plant flowering bulbs and strawberries for then to enjoy over the coming weeks and months.

Women joining our Empowerment Programme have expressed interest in running a community cafe where local residents from all walks of life, including isolated individuals who might not have opportunities to connect with a wider and more diverse community, can come for a healthy Asian lunchtime meal, meet others and gain catering experience as volunteers. They will also gain Food Hygiene and Food Industry qualifications and build confidence to manage this initiative as a collective community cafe. Our purpose is to bring women from a diversity of cultural backgrounds together and to meet with residents from a range of other communities in a safe, positive and healthy public venue; this is also a crucial social opportunity for women who are often rebuilding their lives after major change including family breakdown.

Over the year, we have been working in partnership with the Sheffield Environment Movement to instil knowledge, skills and passion for the natural environment within our community. We worked with 36 women to enable them to start a journey towards becoming mentors, champions and ambassadors within their own networks and become empowered to follow pathways into volunteering, training and employment. The activities included walks, fishing, a cricket tournament and workshops on Air pollution - learning about the causes using natural indicators and how to address it; Sustainable food growth - learning about farming and foraging of herbs for medicine and food; Natural ecosystems - learning about urban parks and the Peak Park in terms of the difference in quality of life; and sessions on water - as a natural resource and its links to climate change.

Overwhelmingly, clients interviewed reported that Roshni had changed their lives, providing support, crucial networks where family and friends had become alienated, actively encouraging women to overcome challenges and move forward in ways they had not thought possible. Feedback from partners and referring organisations was also overwhelmingly positive.

Our summer play scheme was face to face, and in addition to the fun based indoor and outdoor activities delivered, we were able to provide nutritious hot meals for the children from our community café running from the UMIX centre. At the same time as the summer play scheme was running we took advantage of the fact that mums had some free time and offered them Conversation English classes, wellbeing classes, parenting classes and opportunities to go on guided walks with staff in the afternoons. This aspect of the scheme was also enjoyed by the mums.

We are looking to provide a catering venue where women demonstrate a diversity of skills, learn how a small business can be established and to provide a model for other potential community-led businesses.

Covid-19 & Vaccine support initiatives

Over the past year we continued to disseminate public health messages both local and national to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Public health messages were broken down and explained in community languages to members of the community and we used a number of platforms to assist us with getting the messages out. Training and Education Roshni provides a range of accredited/non accredited training and development opportunities in a broad range of subject areas. During the lockdown, Roshni has continued to operate “business as usual”. Staf were using technology such as Zoom, MS Teams, WhatsApp and telephone to continue to deliver training, employability and parenting classes. Dependent on their English language skills, clients have the option to attend ESOL classes run by Shefeld City College at Roshni or our in-house drama based conversation English classes run by volunteers. For clients who are looking for work, the employability course is used to build confdence, self-esteem and identify current skills. Practical support is provided to research jobs, develop CVs and interview skills. The aims of our courses are to develop basic knowledge and skills that can be used in everyday life; and that develop and empower women to become more independent.
