Nant Coch Church, Newport
Registered UK charty number 1149126
Trustees, Annual Report for the year ending 31 January 2024
Background
Nant Coch was founded in 1942 and moved to its present premises in 1954. Originally it
operated on the Open Brethren model, but over the years tt has developed into an
independent Church in the evangelical tradition. It offers a variety of regular opportunities
for worship, learning, discussion and prayer, youth work, community events for senior
citizens, lunches, weekly baby and toddler sessions and an annual holiday club, as well as
weddings, funerals, baptisms and dedications as required. The Church has no formal
membership (although it is convenient to refer to those who attend regularly as meinbers),
and all events are open to any member of the public who wishes to attend, subject only to
safeguarding procedures and some limitations on numbers imposed by safety and practical
considerations. Further details are given in this report.
The Church was officially rogistered as a charity on 27 September 2012.
Aim, purpose and objectives
The aim, purpose and objectives of the Church are for the benefit of the public, and ale set
out in the Trust Deed. They are.-
first, to advance the Christian faith in accordance with our statement of beliefs (which
is the Evangelical Alliance's statement of faith) in such ways and in such part5 of the United
Kingdom or the world as the Trustees from time to time may think fit.,
secondly, to relieve sickness and financial hardship and to promote and preserve
good physical, emotional and spiritual health and well-being by the provision of funds.

goods or services of any kind, including through the provision of counselling and support in
such parts of the United Kingdom or the wodd as the Trustees from time to time may think
thirdly, to advan￿ education in such ways and in such parts of the United Kingdom
or the world as the Trustees from time to time may think fit. and
finally, any other activity which directly or indirectly supports or furthers the above
and is consistent with the law and the trust deed of the Church.
Activities, achievements and perforniance
The Church is committed to enabling as many people as possible to worship at Nant Coch
and to become part of the Church family. The Church leadership maintains an overview of
the Church's activities and seeks to involve as many people as possible in the activities of
the Church.
As noted above, there is no formal Church membership, and infomal membership of the
Church is open to all true Christians and those wanting to know more about the Christian
faith.
When planning our activities for the year, we are conscious of the Commission's guidance
on public benefit and in particular the guidance to charities on the advancement of religion.
We seek to enable ordinary people to live out their faith as part of the Church family in the
modern world by'.-
encouraging worship, prayer and personal study-
providing teaching about the Christian faith.,
developing people's understanding of, and trust in, Jesus.,
giving practical help and guidan￿ on how the Christian life can be lived in an
increasingly non-christian environment..
providing pastoral care for those who want it-
encouraging and financing missionary work both locally and further afield- and
encouraging charitable social work as an expression of the love of God to the people
around us and elsewhere in the world
Our building in Newport is important to carying out this work.
Services
The purpose of the se￿I￿S is to give those present an opportunity to worship God, to pray
together, to encourage and develop our trusl in Jesus. and to learn more about the
Christian faith and how it is practised in the modern world. Anyone is welcome to come to
our services and all Christians are encouraged to take a full part in them. including,

communion.
The Church offers a moming service each Sunday. We continue to make the services
available on YouTube and via CD for those who prefer not to attend in person in the form of
an audio recording interspersed with YouTube videos of songs. This means that Church
members can continue to feel part of the church family without feeling any pressure to
expose themselves to any risk.
Sunday momings are now back to nomal. The work with the children is described below,.
for the rest of us, most Sunday services started with a time of all-age singing, prayer and
learning together, followed by Sunday Club for the children and young people, and further
worship. prayer, a talk and sometimes communion for the adults. We occasionally replace
this with an all-age setvice.
Services are led in a variety of Styles by various regular members. Other people take part
as appropriate. Most of the services include a talk given by someone from another Church
nearby, with a minority being given by one of our members. The majority of Ihe talks follow
a pre-set programme.. over the year this has covered Luke, what we believe, what God is
doing around the world, the life of Samuel and praise and prayer. Special services are
held at Christmas and Easter (including Good Friday). Attendance was typically about 30
adults and a dozen children, although this is very variable.
Youth Wo
The church continues to provide activities for children and young people and over the past
year we have seen a number of new children attending. We would still like to offer more,
but this is dependent on having enough volunteer leaders.
These are the main activities currently being offered:
Elements
This group is for teenage girls. The club is for gids of secondary school age from the
community. It takes place on a Monday night during term times The session begins at 7.30
and lasts for an hour and a half to two hours, depending on the activities being undertaken.
There is a Bible study and prayer, and also a game or craft activity, or both.
There are currently 6 girls on the register but 2 do not attend much., they are concentrating
on schoolwork., 3 come almost every week,. we have occasional visitors, one of whom is
planning to join the group. The group has contributed to Sunday services for special
occasions such as Christmas, and this year pioduced a nativity story using small loy
figures, writing the script and making the scenery and setting themselves. This was also
videoed and edited by the group and shown in the carol service. In the spring term we
began a series of studies based on Mark's gospel, which will continue into the summer, and

have based a number of craft activities on the studies. A new venture for this year is that in
the summer term we will use the Monday evening group time to have 'Revise, relax, chat
and pray, sessions,. this will be after half term when the girls need to be doing a lot of
revision.
In January 2023. the group visited a local charity for those on the streets or vulnerably
housed, which had a big impact on the girls, and they went on to donate to a collection for
packs of clothes and toiletries for those on the streets. This year (March 2024) we visited
Grace House in March. This is a house for vulnerable ladies who have been through
hallenging situations. Two of the ladies were generous in sharing their time and their
stories with the group, and the lady who runs the house showed us round the communal
areas and explained the project's history and ambitions for the future. The girls would now
like to organize a fund-raising event to contribute towards the cost of improvements.
There is a ￿atsApp group foi Elements, which is used by the girls and the leaders for
information about group activities. One of the church safeguarding officers is also
member of the WhatsApp group.
Sunday Club
This group meets on Sundays at 10.30. The sessions involve a Bible Story and teaching,
games, craft, drama, prayers and songs, which are led by a team of volunteer leaders on a
rota basis. The sessions last for as long as the church service, with the leaders being
flexible about the activities towards the end and having games and activities available for
when the service overruns. Children join the Servi￿ with their parents or carers at 10.30
and stay for the first 10-20 minutes, then go upstairs for their Sunday club sessions, which
last until the service finishes, which can vary between half an hour to over an hour more.
The children join their parents for refreshments after the church service ends.
The children or young people are currently in ￿0 groups.. those aged 6 and under and
those aged 7 or oldef, the youngest children have a separate room. A number of the
children have additional learning needs. The activities for the children aged 7 and over are
designed as far as possible to be differentiated according to the needs and abilities of each
individual, but undertaken in the same room. One child is now often given a lift by members
of the congregation so that she can come to Sunday Club.
During the last year, some of the children in the older group have decided to stay in the
SeNi￿S with their parents_
There are currently 11 childrenl young people on the register. (not counting the ones who
stay in the service). The majority of them attend most weeks. six in the older group and five
in the younger group. There are also a number of other children who visit families who
belong to the church and come to Sunday Club at irregular intervals, and we have
occasional unexpected visitors too.

In September 2023 there was a trip to an outdoor famlactivity ￿ntre for the children and
their families, and other church members came along too.
The Sunday Club group (including the children who now stay in the services) again took
part in a Nativity presentation which was recorded to be shown in the service at Christmas
time, and in a special family Servi￿ in June, both also available to be seen on line by the
families and friends of the children if they were not able to attend the seNice or w
nted to
see it again and enjoy the children's contributions.
There is a WhatsApp group for the parentslcarers of members of Sunday Club and the
leaders, in which we can share information about the group and relevant events, and keep
in touch with those who do not attend regulady.
Holiday Club
We were unable to run a holiday Club in the summer of 2023, due to not enough leaders
being available, and it is still uncertain whether or not we can run one in 2024. In 2023, for
the Sundays in the summer holidays, we organised activities for the children to do at the
back of the church during setvices,. this was very successful, and we have done the same
in the Christmas and Easter holidays since then.
Monthly 'Fun Night,
The monthly 'Fun Nighy which started in January 2023 for the children in Sunday Club and
their friends, has now become an established part of church activities. The children chose a
name and made a logo for the club, which is now called 'House of Fun,. The club is held on
the last Friday of the month in term time, and the children take part in craft activities and
games. The younger ones (under 7) come from 4.30 to 5.15 and the older ones (up to 13)
come from 5 30 to 6 45. The children have been inviting their friends and we have had up to
seven childrer) new to the church, as well as the core group of the dozen or so children who
attend church on Sundays. The group has now been advertised in a low-key way in the
most recent church newsletter, which goes to the homes around the church about 3 times a
year.
Other work with children and young people
Under the auspices of ICE Wales, a local Christian educational charity, members of the
church are involved in running clubs and assemblies in primary schools. Over the last year,
it has been difficult to arrange visits to the church by the children, as in the past when
members of the congregation have presented an interactive drama explaining the meaning
of the main Christian festivals,. attempts have been thwarted by the weather and by the
children's busy schedules but members of Nant Coch have been invtted instead to present
something similar in assemblies

Baby and Toddler Group
The group meets on a Tuesday moming bet￿een 10am and 11.45 am and places are
booked online via the church website. The aim of the Baby and Toddler Group is to provide
a waim safe environment for parents and carers with babies and toddlers up to the age of 3
years old. The group is a good opportunity for parents and carers to make new friends and
also share worries in a safe environment, either with their peers, a more experienced parent
or one of the volunteers.
Parents I carers are responsible for their children at all times but helpers aim to give
support and encouragement as well as practical help when required. Group helpers offer to
pray for any problems that arise for parents I carers - this is very much appreciated. We
also pray for them regularly.
We strive to give the best welcome, care and attention to all parents I carers and children.
Refreshments are provided for both ehildren and adults. The children's food follows the
Healthy Eating Guidelines.
The majority of parents / carers are from outside the Church, although some do attend
other churches. Some of the parents I carers do attend some of our special services such
as Christmas, Easter and Mothers, Day.
There is no charge to join the group, but donations are very much appreciated to fund the
group.
Pastoral care
The Church provides pastoral care to its congregation through smaller groups. These
gioups provide pastoral care, either from the group leader andlor from other group
members. They also provide fellowship beyond Sunday servI￿s. pray for each other and
encourage each other to grow in the Christian faith.
Bible studies
"Your word is a lamp to my feet. and a light for my path." Psalm 119 verse 105
We believe that the study of God's word is vital to our everyday lives. God speaks to us
through His Word, the Bible. and, whilst it was written many years ago. it still has a powerful
relevancy to our lives today.

The groups meet to study and discuss God's Word, to pray and to share fellowship, either
weekly or monthly. The Bible study groups are open for anyone to join and are advertised in
the Church diary.
Prayer
Prayer is an essential part of the life of Nant Coch Church, and is a response to the
invilation from God to communicate with Him at any lime in praise and worship and to
depend on Him for all our needs. For these reasons. it is part of both the wider Church
meeting together on a Sunday, smaller Church groups meeting mid-week and individuals,
lives as they live life in the community and in the workplace. The Church is also
represented at prayer meetings for all the Churches In Newport.
Opportunities for Prayer at Nant Coch Church are as follows
Saturday morning 9_00 until 10.00 (on-line)
As part of the midweek Bible Studies
During se[vi￿S and before and l or after some activilies
A week of prayer at the start of some school terms
There is a Prayer Ministry team available after Services
The Church operates a prayer chain via email. Anyone wishing to join the prayer
chain provides their email address to the coordinator. To put a message on the prayer
chain, the message can be sent to prayer@nantcoch.org.uk. The message will then reach
the coordinator and be sent out on the prayer chain to enable people to pray at home.
There are about 30 people on the prayer chain.
We encourage our young people to pray during their meetings and see it as a natural part
of everyday life.
Neighbourhood visiting
Over the last year, there have been changes in the way we have undertaken visiting in the
neighbourhood From the autumn of 2018 to June 2023. Nant Coch church was involved in
the Neighbourhood Chaplains scheme under the auspices of 'Counties'. For most of that
time. we had two 'Chaplains'. However, in June 2023 one of the chaplains moved away and
we were not able to continue with this scheme, so the connection with Counties had to be
discontinued. The remaining chaplain continued to maintain contact with the dozen or so
people we had been visiting most frequently,. mostly these are people on their own or with
reduced mobility or sickness, but some have been bereaved and all have welcomed the
chance to have a chat, sometimes for an hour or more, sometimes more briefly.
We now have another volunteer to join the visiting team of ￿0, and continue to visit those
with whom we are in contact, although we are not able to undertake visiting every week.

Neèdless to say, the congregation, including the two who are now in the 'visiting team,, are
involved in visiting both other members of the congregation and neighbours generally, to
give or receive help, support and encouragement.
Cornerstone
Comerstone {formerly Warm Up Winter) continues to meet on Wednesday afternoons from
1 to 3pm. It has evolved Sin￿ last year= it is still a small group but we now do crafts most
weeks. It is usually Ann who sets up the topics and there have been wire work, Easter
trees, diamond painting. painting and stone painting to name a few. Refreshments are still
offered with cakes.
Whilst doing craft, many times we find ourselves talking about the Lord helping us through
our lives and this has produced deepening of our friendships.
We are now looking to slowly increase the numbers and brainstorming ways to do
it. Anyone is free to join.
Community Event
The Community Event happens once a month on a Thursday. It starts at 10.30 am when
tea and coffee are seNed on arrival, followed by a quiz. This is followed by a talk by
charity about what is happening in different parts of the world, a talk about a topic of
general interest such as flower arranging. Bible readings and music, or a church-style
service at Easter. Harvest and Christmas. Finally a light lunch is provided. The finishing
time is about 1.00. About 25 people attend., ages range from 30 to 80.
The Community Event is an opportunity to welcome in people from the local area and also
people from olher churches. Our aim at Nant Coch Church is not to make money but to
show God's love to everyone by offering a helping hand a listening ear and fun and
friendship.
Catering
This year it was possible to provide catering for a variety of occasions during the year.
We serve tea, coffee and biscuits after the Sunday service each week, with ￿lebratiOn
cakes on special occasions. At Christmas services appropriate refreshments were served.
Juice and water are also provided for the youngsters.
Each week at the Baby and Toddler group we serve tea, coffee and biscuits for the mums,
grandmas, dads and carers from the area and dry baby snacks and water for the toddlers.

Each month we have a Community Event for people in the surrounding area with a varied
programme: with morning tea, coffee and cake and a cooked lunch and dessert for
everyone who comes.
We have been able to have a full Church Christmas lunch and a Sunday lunch on other
occasions for those wishing to stay after the morning servi￿. These have been enjoyed by
everyone especially the young families.
With a number of regular events we have provided light refreshments which have been
much appreciated by those attending.
The church is inspected on a regular basis by the local authority and have continued to
have a 5 star rating.
Marriages, Funerals etc.
The church continues to offer funerals to those who want a Christian commemoration of the
life of their loved ones. It also supports biblical marriages and is registered to perform
Christian marriages and is able to perform baptisms. We also make our baptistry available
to other churches that wish to use it. During the period covered by this report no funerals
took place.
The new marriage regulations have now been in pla￿ for two years but no marfiage
ceremonies have taken pla￿. Also no baptisms have taken place.
Inter-church activities
