ACHIEVEMENf AND PERFORMAMCE
Charltable activlties
Looking back at the last few Tnjstees. Reports, they always seem to bpgin by commenting on how bleak and unstable
everythin8 is, both at home and abroad. Sadly. 2024 15 no th"fferent wtth the escalation of the tragedy that is Isr3È1 and
Paléstlne, the General Elèttion at home which pioduced the almost inevttablè result and rhe seemingly nonsensical
Presidential race in the USA resulting in a second term for Donald Tiufflp. Against that backdrop. it has become ever
more dtfficult to ensure that music and the performing arts remain Jlive and vibrant and even more essentlal for
distracting us and preserying our mvslcal culture and heritage_
Will the new Government recognise this and give the Arts the support it so desperately needs to stay alive? Will the
Igsure of s(> many smaller arts organisations which receive no public funding be stemmed? So far. the invaluable
Thehtre Production Tax Tredits schewne introduced by the former Govemment hès survived the first Budget but,
given the gigantic financial black hole the Government keeps telling the people It has inherited from its predecessors.
the continuin8 high interest rates and record consumer prices, there is a 8enuine fear that yet another lifeline for
the ailing Arts settor will be axed. And until those in power who can make a di)Yerence recognise that the Arts are
absolutely vital to our development and advancement as a species, privately funded arts charities will continue to
Stwggle tQ survive and therefore, $0 too wll those artists who rely heavily on suth charÈties for work experience in the
early days of their career5.
Against this backdrop, West Green House Operè faced another tOUBh year. exacerbated by the unexpÈcted

control. Add to that the CDntinuTrng unpredict3bilrty ol the Brit15h weather and its impact on outdoor performances
and it seemed we were facin8 the perfert storm. So. shortly after Easter, some tough decision5 had to be made by the
8oard in order to ensure our 2024 Season could go ahead as planned and that the contract5 already entered into with
our artists, musicians, creatives and operational support stsff could be honoured and In full.
The shortfall in our budgetÈd income was substant131 but the Board rose to the occasion and donated funds to meet
h31f of the deficit with the balance and more coming from our incredibly generous palrons, friends and 5UPPOrters.
This tOEether with the ingenuity of our Tèchnical Director. Neil Daykin and his team. meènt we were able to fvlfil all of
ur tinancial and artistic obligations. Nevertheless. in order to keep costs dciwn, a decision was taken by the Board not
to perform on the Lake this Season.. instead spending our money on rètaining the very highest of performance and
production standards lor whicFI we have been regularly applauded rather thèn giving prioiity to the aesthetics of the

Fortunately, Y4e are blessed in ihat West Green offers multiple areas within which the Opera can be stage(S and those
5t3lwarts who h3ve been coming lo We51 Green lor many years will re(all it all began in the Green Theatre on the
tiered lawns on the West facing side of the House_ As we gTew and the need for propèr ta%t and trew f3tilr£ies became
pressing. we moved to the Meadow beyond the ornate wrought iron gates at the end of the Green TheatrÈ. Then,
forced by Cowd to perfomi with greater personal space for our audience and in the open air, we moved to the truly
beautiful setting of the Lakefield and to which we hope to return in future Seasons.
In the meantime. the L3keheld once 3gain became the ideal setting for picnics during the long interval, ever hopeful
we might enjoy the perfert English Summer. However, just in case. the usual shared undercover Pavilion wa5 available
and for private dining under the stars, the beautrful Raj Tents were erected in various picturesque sPOts around the
Lakefield. For the first time since the Covid epidemic, the 2024 Season also saw the return of Fine Dinins in the
charming Ènvirons of the recently refurbished Tea Rooms. We were also excited to launch our Opera Club where
Members could enjoy a range of prNilege5.' from a dedicated and cornfortably appointed Club House envlronment

So. all in all. as we apprtrach 25 years of we￿ Green House Opera. it was perhap5 fitting l and financially prudentl that
we chose to revtsit those original G3rderb roots where it all began- in the Green Theatre and wrth the lakefield once
again becoming the picnic and ol fresco dinin8 p￿adISe it always was.

WÈ were truly delighted to welc(Trme the BBC c￿Cert Orchestra to West Green for its Opening Night Gala. an ￿ent

So PDpular was Oz Clarke's Early Music evenin8 in 2023 on the theme of beer and wine through the centuries . we
invited him back for another alcohol-infused earfy musrcal journey but this time with Gin as its theme. A5 Oz told his

Celebrating the Icoth annNersary of the death ot that Titsn of opera, Giacomo Pyccini. we were proud to present a

dlrecting the Sistèrs and thè rising Brotish soprano JÈnnie 5tafford singing m3gn41itèntly the monumenial titlè role, we
witnessed our first standing ovalion ever at West Green with the critic5 unanimous in their praise.
A5 Usual, we showcased the l>est of OLir young talent from the 2024 Season's performances in our ever
popular weekend afternotsn contèrts. Many who took part are at the very beginning of their careers and either take
the smaller roles in the main produrtions or are part of the indispensable cover programrne which. once again. was
fvnded by one of our most loyal patrons.
Our final wèékènd saw a fantastic new produdion of Rossini's evergieen comedy rnasterpiece, "The Barber of 5ewille"
under the expert baton of another hugely popular West Green regular, Matthew Kofi Waldren. Brimm*ng over with
the must fizzing and famous of arias. our new produttion desigrted by Laura Jane Stanfie1d and directed by Victoria
Newtyn boasted a truly stellar cast, grving thetr all in the classic tale of emotional subterfu8e and deception in pursuit
of true love.
IN 2024, we also welcomed to the West Green Family. a new Artistic Director, Thoma5 Elwin. NO Stranger to West

In this most difficuft of years, the Board expressed its profound grati￿de to the irreplaceable Jane Mossop. the first
port of call for many of our guests coming to West Green. Similarly for our Technlcal Direttor. Nell Daykin and his
team who worked tirele551y and ingeniou51y to make Sure the hurdles rnerbtioned earlier were overcome. leaving us in
excellent shape and against all the odds. To this roste¥ Df often unsung heroes must be added our amazing volunteer5.
the famous West Green Opera Angels. Without them on hand before, durin8 and after wery performance, we just
could not function as seamlessly as we do. Our Founder and £ardenei extraordinaire, mar￿Vn Abbott and her team,

Fundraisin8 zclivttres
Due to the loss of a major annual donation, immediate fund raisirhg efforts had to begin in April 2024 to see if the
deficit left by this unfortunate but unavoidable withdrawal of support could restore the charity's finances to a levél
where the 8oard was c¢nfi"dent it could meet our financial commitments as they fell due. If there had been any dovbt.
the Season would hBVP been cancelled. Ac£oFdinely. we We￿ not able ¢0 wait foi the patron renewals and the profits
from thè annual fundraising g31a which all happén much13tÈr in thè Season. To thig end, every Board Membei made a
significant donation 3nd on the back of that, we went out to our patrons. friends and supporters as well as to our
regular ticket buyers to ask for their a5SlStance, however small. The response was magnificent and indeed donations
were ieceived from many who were coming to West &een tor the first time in 2024.
The Board decidèd it Wotjld be wrong to ask thosè donors to contribute again by buying iickets for and bidding f(>r
prizes at the usual Annual Gala Oinner this year so instead. sponsored by a member of our Advi50ry Council, we
hosted a private thank you dinner at the RAC for our most generous 5UPPOrters which resulted In signifi'cant pledge5
of fin3ncial support for our Silver AnniveFSaFy Season in 2025_ We also staged our first Carol Concert in London which
proved so popular, it is now almost cÈrtainly going to becomè a fi.xture in each Sèason's fvndraisin8 calèndar.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Financial review
During the year the charty had tot31 incomin8 resources of ES￿,13712023- £985,392). The majorily of this decrease
is due to the lack of the highly successful visits to Milan and Ba13 at Vintner'5 Hall whith took place in 2023. There was
èn overall reduction in donations ￿e1ved. as in 2023 (lonations ￿nc￿aSed due to some extreniely generous donations
from a number of individuals and trust5. Unfortunately there was a dec￿&se in ticket income together with
decrease in the c13im for Theatre Tax Relief. This was the third and final year when the relief was claimed at the
enhanced rate of 45%. In fuiure, the rate for non-iouring performances will be set at 40%.
Offsetting the decreased income, however. there w35 a decrease in costs. particul3dy in respecl of the tosts of the
oper3 pertormantes. There w2S Still, howèver. a deficit on the General Fund of £87,57312023 surplus £41,584). In the
year ended 30th November 2023 the donors of the remaining funds made for the new theatre project amounting to
E88.554. agreed that these funds rnay be transferred to ihe General F￿d resulting in a s￿r91US to be carried forward
to future year5 on the General Fund a5 at 30th November 2024 of £43.192 12023 cumulative Surplus £130,765).
Further details of the charity's intomè and expenditure for the year are shown in the statement of financial activitie5
and the accompanying notes.
Reserves Poliry
It 15 the policy tsf the £hèrÈty that unrestricted funds which have not been designated for a specific use should be
maintained 3t a level equivalent to between three and six tnonths expenditure. The tru5tee5 consider that reserves at
this level will ensure that, in the evenl of a signifitant drop in fundin& they wll be able to tontinue thè d)arrty's
activlties whlle consideraiion is given to ways in which addrtDnal funds may be ra￿ed.
Although the level of reserves improved in 2023, particularly following the transfer from the New Theatre Fund as
mentioned above, the charity has been unable to maintain the above policy due to the defiat incurred in 2024.
Unrestricted reserves a5 at 30th November 2024 represented appyoximately one months expenditure based on
expenditure in the year ende(J 30th November 2024_ The trustees are artively seeking to address this 51tuation by
5eeksn8 additional donor5 and by increasin8 the number of fund tsising events.

Prlnclpal rtsks and uncertainties
The prinupal risk normally hced by the Charity relates to the potenti31 loss of the donations which enable the Charity

FUTURE PLANS
Despite the entirely unpredictable weather during the entire performance period at West Green in july 2023. the

garnered ravè revièws. This suggests we might make future seasons even more eclectic for our audiences.
