## **Objectives and Activities** 

The purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document are to further such charitable purposes as the trustees see fit, including 

- A) Advancing the mental and physical health and well-being of young people in particular but not exclusively, by providing and assisting in providing facilities for sport and physical activity, recreation art and culture or other leisure time occupation 

- B) Advancing education (including education, training and development in the area of leadership) 

- C) Promoting volunteering (where to do so furthers a charitable purpose or purposes) 

- D) Promoting the social inclusion of those excluded from society who are in need 

- E) Promoting equality and diversity for the public benefit without distinction of gender, sexual orientation, race, age, disability, nationality or of religious or other opinions 

- F) The promotion of any other charitable purpose for the benefit of the public (Charitable under English Law) 

The report below shows that the charity in the current year has provided activities for young people, education and development health and well-being volunteering, social inclusion. 

All the trustees (Steven Turner, Anthony Jones, Samantha Johnson and Benjamin Fisher) have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit. 

## **Achievements and Performance** 

The charity is grateful for all those who make its work possible and looks forward to a bright future. The charity’s work in the current year has been aided by the receipt of grants from The Earley Charity and Get Berkshire Active. 

**– The Earley Charity Community Wheelchair Programme**

The charity received funding from The Earley Charity to launch a wheelchair basketball programme based at Loddon Valley Leisure Centre to provide an opportunity for both wheelchair and able-bodied players to experience a really exciting sport locally. 

This involved hosting competitive wheelchair basketball games for the community to watch, upskilling key individuals to gain their wheelchair coaching qualifications, paying for qualified coaches to work with the groups, hall hire for the games as well as kit and equipment to help ensure the programme can be run effectively. 

To help engage with the community, as well as having an opportunity to watch and learn about the sport the programme also put on community "have a go" events which allowed people to come along and try a range of chair-based sports. 

This was the first ever Reading based wheelchair basketball programme so was a really exciting new project for the charity to be involved in. 

## **Get Berkshire Active – Together Fund + Resilience Fund** 

The Rockets Foundation received funding to run a programme to encourage sports clubs in Berkshire to work together as a consortium to ensure that sports delivery in the area can be delivered at a high level due to joined up planning, thinking and delivery. 

The project was designed to work with children and young people with additional needs and also those who may be motivated by anti-social behaviour due to a lack of engaging activities. 

By working together clubs could support each other with delivery, coach education, best practice, and organisational set-up. Sessions were run in conjunction with other sports to allow the young people involved to have an opportunity to a variety of sports rather than only one. Coaches supported each other and were able to learn from each other. 

Rockets were involved in the planning and running of weekly sessions and multi-sport events for people with disabilities and local youth-age children to bring together local sports clubs and collaborate to provide an impactful sports programme in the area. 

## **– The Earley Charity Weller Centre Programme** 

The Earley Charity funding was used to continue the charity's school programme in delivering afterschool basketball clubs. It also included delivering assemblies on disability sport for each of the schools where we spoke to the children using the theme “Be Brave” and having a “You can” mindset! 

The programme also delivered the club’s Weller Centre basketball hub for 10–16-year-olds for players to gain weekly coaching from Rockets professional coaches and players. 

As part of the Rockets Community League, the teams from the centre received t-shirts for them to compete in during the season. 

The funding was also used to purchase new equipment and old equipment that isn’t at the standard to be used for the hubs was then donated to the local schools.

The other major part of the charity is the junior club which continues to go from strength to strength over the whole club's 27-year history. The "junior" section where players train and play at the performance and development level now sees 16 teams compete regionally and nationally with just over 225 athletes training at least twice a week and playing games at weekends. 

The club continues to have age group representation at every age for both male and female participants, with premier level and conference level for boys at Under 14, 16, and 18 teams, and premier level for girls at Under 14, 16, and 18 teams. Both boys and girls also have full Under 10 and Under 12 programmes with all teams having structured competition between every 1-3 weeks. 

The structural changes with a new head of youth basketball being appointed alongside a head of girls' basketball and head of boys' basketball has worked well and now the aim is to onboard a head of delivery for the programme as well. The introduction of a new junior club coaching committee also took place, and this saw six coaches from different sporting backgrounds come together to ensure the club is offering the very best basketball, environment, and coaching to all its younger members. The committee will also be looking to appoint four new members to administration programme in relation to referee and table official appointments, club fixtures and venues, as well as adding to the 3 members of the safeguarding team which was enhanced this year. 

Amongst the circa 300 personnel to include all staff members (coaches, team managers, support staff etc.), a number of players currently represent their national teams, a good number represent their super region and, and even more their region, with some of the coaching staff also representing on these respective stages. The aim is to provide more players with an opportunity to represent further along the pathway as well as within its own club system with about 30 players currently "training up" with different teams. 

Currently, we are in year 2 of the new 3–5-year plan which was formulated by the coaching committee which will continue look to increase the number of participants, teams, and coaches as well as challenge the quality of what is being delivered, and we look forward to reporting on that in due course. 

## **Financial Review** 

On the financial side, the trustees remain satisfied that it continues to be viable but are reviewing the charity's reserves policy. The charity is grateful for all those who make its work possible and looks forward to a bright future.

I report to the accounts of the company for the year to 31 May 2024, which are set out on the following pages. 

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner** 

The trustees (who are also the directors of the company for the purposes of company law) are also responsible for the preparation of the accounts.  The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 (2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.  Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to: 

Examine the accounts under section 145 pf the 2-11 Act; To follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. 

## **Basis of independent examiner’s report** 

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission.  An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records.  It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters.  The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’, and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below. 

## **Independent examiner’s statement** 

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: 

(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements to keep accounting records in accordance with section 386 of the Companies Act 2006 and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records, comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the Companies Act 2006 and with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities have not been met; or
