Trustees Report 2021
It fills me with piide to be able to sit and write a small reflection on the year that has
passed.
Although we are cleath still not completely W this moment in time that will be
known as 'Covid' we are however looking further down a more positive side of the
year and years ahead.
The way that the Rockets as an organlsation managed to pivot from a 'community
provider of sport and actI￿ty arHI turn itself into an 'online. youth support team,
while simultaneously keeping up the enthusiasm and connection that so many
families had previously come to rely upon is nothing short of a wonder.
Whilst it must be sald that fvnding streams quickly became more easily available and
support was more readily found for many groups It was most definltely the people
within our or8anlsatlon that made everythlng tick over almost seamlessly.
From people delivering online classes twice a weeK to dlstsnced drop Ins, to pa
walks for those that needed a gentle push and eventually managing us all back into
physlcal actlvlty through a strict and expenslve return to play protocol overseen by a
few speclal people within the ch317Ws mix of staff and volunteer&
The cost of PPE through this time was a major factor in needing such quick and
supportive funding as a significant amount needed to be spent to support our staff
and keep our membership feeling protected.
As the RSEF gets more used to the now smooth overseeing of the basketball club as
a whole, it has been evident that the fund raising and support given to so many
young people within the teams framework has been a lrfe saver.
For a number of familles the support available-both financial and emotional has been
something that was simply not available before and it would be remiss of me not to
thank our amazing group of trustees but in particular Steve Turner and Kery Kelly
for thelr detem)inatlon and vision to support so many young people and families
across the age group team&
In the community the RSEF was as actrve as we have ever been and under the
watchful eye of our community development team some of the projects this year
have again surpassed expectath)ns and number&

counts ot Rockets Sport and Educatlonal F(￿ndall0Tr-year endlng 31° May 2021
Below I have summarised (never doing the project nearly enough justice!) the work
done In some of the key projects this ye4Y.
Earley Charity Funding
Through the support of the Earfey Ch*ity the Foundation has been able to wovide
weekly basketball sessions at The Weller Conimunity cent￿ in Amersham Road.
This is an area that has a high crime rate and struggles to engage young people and
deter them away from ￿ti-sO￿al behaviour& The pro8ramme not only provldes
weekly coaching but also provides the centre with a sports co-ordinator who
organlses the sesslons and helps in planning of other community engagement
events. However the programme was effected by lockdown at the end of March
2020 so our delivery had to change to adapt to the situation we found ourselves in.
So from April 2020 the dub launched a you tube channel where they posted weekly
workouts. games. and thallen8es to help keep the young people actlve during the
lockdown period.
As soon as it was safe to do so Uuly 2020) the dub then restsrted sesslons under
strict socially distanced 8uldeline& Due to onty being able to coach small numbers in
sessions delivery increased to 16 sesslons per week to ensure we saw as many
children as possible.
During the summer holldays a free summer programme was run to ensure
basketball reached out to those children who were most vulnerable and were most
in need of sport and activity. The programme al￿ teamed up with local food banks
where the young people could access free snacks and lunch.
Earley Charlty PPE Fundln8
This funding was specifically for the club to purchase PPE equipment which was
vitsl In being able to get their sessions back up and running under the strfct Covld
guidelines they were under. It allowed the purthase of wipes. sanitiser stations.
spray, signage and much more.
Basketball England Tackllng Inequalities Funding
The programme provlded weekly baskethall sessions for young people with
additional needs between the <es of 8 and 18 and also camps in the school
holiday&
The funding has not only glven some support for their youth programme but has
a150 allowed a senior session to start for post 18 player& With both swions filling
up in the first terni it shows how much of a need there is for sports activities for
young people with additional need
This was initially started on zoom when fxe to face delivery wasn't safe and then
moved to in person delivery in small group>

Accounts of Rockets Sport and Educational F(wndalion-Year ending 31 May 2021
Get Be￿$hIre Active Tackling Irwualities Funding
The funding helped the tharity to wn summer activity for young people with
addttional needs whlch included a multi*port camp in conjunction with Craig at
CHRugby. The engagement with the players and families was really helpful in
making plans for future SEN delivery l)oth within the TIF programme and also
beyond this. Following on from Rockets Summer SEN programme, a weekly session
was started at South Reading Leisure Centre for children aged 8 - 18. Two head
coaches from Rockets community team led the coaching alongside one of Rockets
Young CO￿e5, and a volunteer coach from Reading unive￿Ity This provided such a
great amount of support for the young people involved.
This programme was launthed In the latter stage of the year due to in person
delivery not being safe due to covld.
Slr Garfleld Weston prokct
This funding helped the charity to launch a 6th mini basketball hub which caters for
boys and girls age 4-12. The new hub opened up a potential 50 more spaces for
children to play basketball on a weekly basis once it became safe to run bigger
session& It also provided the opportunity for one of the club's apprentice coaches to
help at the hub and gain experience.
In summary this year has been a tale of high successes and high emotions From the
sadness of lost friends and relatives to the highs of rekindled friendships and
activities.
From the online connections to the in person meetin85. 'Covid Year, managed to
take a lot of things away from many of us but thanks to the unerring approach that
the RSEF and the support team around us created there were still many bright times
through a very dark cloud.
Yours truly
Matt Johnson.
