The Kachin Relief Fund – Annual Report for the Year Ending 31 August 2025
The Kachin Relief Fund is a registered charity in England and Wales (Charity No. 1148586). It was established in 2011 by members of the Kachin community in the United Kingdom and was officially granted charitable status on 16 August 2012. All trustees are members of the Kachin community residing in the UK and possess strong local networks. This enables the Fund to deliver humanitarian aid swiftly, transparently, and with exceptional efficiency to those most in need.
The Kachin Relief Fund primarily focuses on emergency relief, educational development—including physical education—health, human rights, and advocacy. The trustees establish strategies and approaches for granting funds or aid based on principles of transparency and accountability. Their approach ensures a rapid response, targets areas of greatest need, and avoids placing additional burdens on local partners.
Background
Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, has endured one of the world’s longest-running civil wars, with the Kachin people resisting since 1961. After a 17-year ceasefire between the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) and the Burmese regime collapsed in 2011, renewed conflict led to widespread devastation: villages were burned and more than 120,000 Kachin civilians were displaced.
These internally displaced persons (IDPs), many of whom have suffered severe trauma, continue to live in overcrowded camps with limited access to healthcare and basic necessities. The situation has worsened following the 2021 military coup, with intensified attacks, aerial bombings, and an increasing number of IDP camps. Despite the scale of the crisis, international aid remains limited, and local organisations, including the Kachin Relief Fund, have played a small but vital role in delivering humanitarian assistance where access is otherwise restricted.

Activities report
1. Emergency Relief and Health Care
During the 2024–2025 financial year, KRF focused on delivering humanitarian aid to Bhamo and Kathar due to heavy fighting. KRF also supported IDPs from the Lashio area, where locals were severely affected by Operation 1027. Thousands of villagers were forced to relocate.
KRF provided emergency aid—mainly rice, cooking oil, salt, beans, garlic, and onions—with cash assistance used as a last resort. These efforts were delivered with the support of local churches and NGOs. On 28 March 2025, a devastating earthquake struck central Burma, causing over 5,000 fatalities and affecting hundreds of thousands of people. It was the second-deadliest earthquake in the country’s history. Although the disaster was on a scale too large for KRF to respond comprehensively, the Fund supported Kachin communities in the Mandalay area affected by the earthquake.

2. Education Development
The Kachin Relief Fund (KRF) partnered with the UK-based Jinghpaw Education Project (JEP) to sponsor several teacher training programmes in Kachin State. This programme has been running successfully for a number of years.
Despite political instability in Myitkyina, training for headteachers was successfully conducted at the Institute of Wisdom Palace in Myitkyina from 2 to 20 April 2025. A total of 25 trainees from schools in the Northern Division (N-gum La area), along with four professional trainers, participated.
Trustees had the opportunity to meet participants online and were deeply moved by their first-hand experiences and the hardships they face due to the ongoing civil war. They were encouraged by the participants’ dedication and commitment to uplifting their communities. Training Content Included:
-
Academic administration
-
School administration
-
Child psychology
-
Teaching methodology
-
Mathematics subject content

3. Human Rights & Advocacy
KRF continued to raise funds to support healthcare workers and teachers participating in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) in Kachin and Northern Shan States following the 2021 military coup.
KRF also sponsored a local human rights coordinator to document violations and engage in advocacy with UN agencies and other NGOs. Trustee members travelled to the China–Burma border areas during 2024– 2025 to observe the local situation and meet partners.
Additionally, KRF trustees and members of the Kachin community in the UK actively advocate for human rights and humanitarian issues affecting Kachin and other ethnic communities in Myanmar.
4. IDP Children’s Development and Physical Education
Since 2014, KRF has supported Myusha Gintawng (Kachin karate instructors) and other sports instructors to provide physical education to internally displaced children, in partnership with BRIDGE, a local NGO.
This project has been highly impactful, benefiting over 1,500 children through structured physical activities and sports training, promoting well-being, teamwork, and emotional resilience.

"Internally displaced children in Maija Yang, located along the China–Myanmar border, participate in sports activities organized between 2024 and 2025. These programs, supported by the Kachin Relief Fund, aim to promote physical well-being, teamwork, and emotional resilience among children affected by conflict and displacement."
4. Fund raising activities
The Kachin Relief Fund trustees and the Kachin community in the UK continued fundraising efforts throughout 2024– 2025. Special thanks go to KRF Coordinator Kai Htang Lashi for inspirational fundraising efforts in 2025, including selling traditional items and food at community events.
KRF is deeply grateful to the Kachin community in the UK and friends of Kachin for their continued support and generosity.
The trustees would also like to thank former trustees Mr. Ringdu Lachyung and Mr. Kyang Bawm for their valuable contributions.
