Objectives and Activities
Making Music, Changing Lives’ objectives are to advance in life and help children and young people through the provision of education in music and recreational and leisure time activities provided in the interests of social welfare, and designed to improve their conditions of life; and to provide support and activities which develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals.
We want to see the lives of individuals and communities improved and inspired through the transformative medium of music making, and to make a positive, creative and enriching contribution to the lives of local people by providing opportunities for our community to learn and play music together.
Our Mission:
-
To work with children to develop their social and communication skills through music
-
To provide the opportunity for children and young people to access a musical instrument and quality tuition regardless of economic background
-
To create greater community cohesion by bringing people together with a shared sense of pride in the musical achievements and performance of their children
-
To enable children to experience something of the fun that playing classical music can bring
-
To work in partnership with other voluntary and statutory organisations, in order to maximise the impact of MMCL in the community
MMCL continues to focus its activities on making music and running an after-school session on Tuesdays delivering instrumental lessons and ensemble opportunities for children and young people in the Ely and Caerau areas of Cardiff. The trustees confirm that they have compiled with the duty in the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit. As stated below, MMCL’s charitable activity work is clear evidence of both the identifiable benefit provided and the relation of this benefit to the charity’s aims.

Chair’s Report
This year seemed like the first time - in a long time - that we were really able to start rebuilding the foundations of the sessions: uninterrupted face to face tuition, activities with our partners, the RWCMD and BBC NOW, welcoming back regular volunteers on a weekly basis, taking on new teaching staff, performing concerts to full audiences without the requirement of sitting in bubbles and at 2-metre distances, and working with a brand new cohort of young musicians.
September 2022 saw some of our young people set off to university –egrees in Biomedical Science and Education awaiting them - but now, also with music at the heart of their lives. We are fortunate that these young people continue to volunteer with us on a weekly basis, helping with the music librarianship, refreshments, setting up the hall and supporting the orchestra. In return, they receive their instrumental lesson and a chance to add some handson community work to their CV. This continued support post-18 was the pilot year, and I am delighted that it has taken off so well.
In addition to our already stellar staff, we welcomed new members to the team – two violin teachers and a flute teacher. The two violin teachers, Emma and Abigail, were generously funded by The Albert & Eugenie Frost Music Trust so that we could expand our teaching and take on more beginners. We remain grateful to the Trust for their continued support. Exam results were excellent once again, with distinctions all-round in ‘cello and clarinet. We are fortunate to have such a committed team of teachers who inspire the young people to continue with their studies.
Our Patron, Leader of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Lesley Hatfield, continues to be hands-on, attending sessions regularly, meeting the staff and young people, and providing us with musical inspiration. Lesley creates opportunities to develop our charity and champions our cause at every opportunity. We have particularly enjoyed the events where Lesley and her colleagues from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales have joined us for the afternoon, coaching ensembles, performing for the young people and teachers during the break times, and ensuring everyone involved leaves inspired and with a renewed desire to continue with their music-making. Our founder and Director of Music, Canon Jan Gould, continues to contribute her passion and musicianship to MMCL and, as a result of her dedication and musical leadership, we held two very successful concerts at Christmas and in the Summer. Both of these concerts were very well attended, and our young people performed to an extremely high standard, both in the orchestra and in solos and small ensembles.
We are also highly fortunate to have an outstanding Artistic Producer, James Brookmyre, who has worked for MMCL since 2013 and who is responsible for the operational elements of MMCL's activities. Without James, we would not be in the healthy financial position that we are in and our Tuesday tuition sessions would not run as well as they do.
Our trustees this year have all supported MMCL in various ways to contribute to our continuing success and we thank them. They are: Naomi Thomas, Isla Horton, Ceri Tippetts, Rhiannon Jones and Kim Fisher.

It takes a lot of dedication to continue all of the activities that are vital to MMCL's existence including keeping on top of the accounts, fundraising, maintaining our website, and supporting the Tuesday sessions, projects and concerts throughout the year. Therefore, I remain extremely grateful to the Church of the Resurrection, our Patron, Artistic Producer, Director of Music and all of our teaching staff, trustees, volunteers and parents/carers for their continuing support to MMCL this year.
