Introduction
2022 at last has shown some recovery from the Covid Pandemic, although regrettably many people have still been affected by the disease. Again there have been many funerals during the year and we offer our sincere condolences to all the friends and relatives of those who have died. The best news was the arrival of our new Curate Katrina Robinson-Brown and her family who have added new life to the Parish, and whilst Martin has had to take on a training role, he has been able to offload some duties, more as Katrina becomes more knowledgeable of her role and the Parish. We look forward to her priesting in June this year. Services have reverted to a regular pattern with different timing on Sundays and a mid-week Communion on Wednesday. School services are back at both St. Mary’s and St. George’s, with regular visits during the year. In addition we now have regular musical events in the church including organ recitals, Bradford Cathedral Choir and the Part Singers. Many thanks to the small team or volunteers without whose help both churches would be unable to operated.

VICARS REPORT
Dear friends,
At the start can I thank you for reading this report and ask that you continue to pray for the mission of our churches. Also, can I thank you in God’s name for being part of His mission in this community. Together we are the family of God and together we seek to serve His kingdom.
It seems that we are at last getting back to a form of normality, although, the start of the year still had some uncertainty.
As I look back there have been many blessings, most particularly the arrival of Revd. Katrina Robinson – Brown, as curate. It has also been a delight to welcome Ken and the children as part of the congregation.
Contained within this report are highlights but these words cannot fully express the life, enjoyment and exertion that goes into all that is done in this parish. And I thank all who have given to this in so many ways.
I give thanks for those who worship here on a regular basis or occasionally we are all part of Christ’s body in our churches.as is clear in our electoral roll report whilst we have sadly lost some faithful members who have moved away or entered into glory, we have grown in number of those who have committed to these churches. I would like to thank the members of the PCC for their prayerful service, Charles as he keeps us up to date as PCC secretary and Katie our Safeguarding officer. We also give thanks for our welcoming teams who are there before our services as a friendly face and still there when the services are over, inviting people to stay for refreshments and tidying away. Those who lead our sung worship Jeremy, Elizabeth, Hazel, Bill and Sue also those who sing in the choir. Those who volunteer to read from God’s word for us to pray and help in any way, those who clean, polish, repair, make tea and coffee, those who love to produce something to the glory of God, and not forgetting those who tend the grounds of our church.
Thank you to; Clive, Pauline and Rodger who take care of our church accounts and put in many hours of work on these.
We are always on the lookout for people serve in so many ways so if you are interested or feel you would like to offer but you’re not sure what please do have a word with one of the wardens.
Speaking of Wardens, a heartfelt thank you for the work of Laurence and Paul, both of whom stand down from their positions this year. Whilst I am sure they will continue to work for the glory of God and the good of the churches, they deserve a well-earned rest from official duties.
We had a number of special celebrations this year along with festal occasions we marked her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II platinum jubilee and sadly her passing. Remembrance Sunday was even better supported than ever with a large contingent from the army cadets. Christmas services were well supported getting back to the way things should be we also saw a new service introduced and led by Revd. Katrina; ‘Blue Christmas’ especially aimed at those who have lost loved ones or find Christmas hard to celebrate.
The return of a full Christmas market was well received and a big thanks to Diana for sorting the program for inside church. During the year we also had a number of successful organ recitals, including; The Royal School of Church Music presentation, Alessandro Bianchi, who
6
is a virtuoso Organist from Cantù in Lombardy, 'Sung Evensong' led by Bradford cathedral choir a part singers concert. Also for the school a session with ‘woofyt’ a novel and experience combining Music, Science & Technology.
At St. George’s we have been blessed by the support of Sue Ogden playing the organ two or three times a month, we have also introduced a separate speaker to improve the sound when MP3’s need to be used. It has been good every half term to welcome Brockholes school into church for collective worship, in addition to the regular visits for collective worship in school by myself and Katrina.
School services have also continued at St Mary’s along with regular leading of collective worship in School again by myself and Katrina. In addition to the we now have regular in church activities with children from the pre-school, a fantastic opportunity and great fun.
In 2021 we established an environmental group under the leadership of Bill Kemp to guide us in this area. This has advanced this year and we have an environmental plan thanks in a large part to the work of Bill.
We lost dear members of our church family in 2022, who were promoted to glory. These included: Bill Forbes, Vernon Haldane Briggs, Gracie Woods, Keith Jenkinson. Each of these dear souls played a significant contribution to the life of our church, and we will miss them a great deal.
Occasional Offices 2022: Funerals 25 Ashes internments 20, Wedding 1 and Baptisms 3.
We are thankful to God for his provision which was far beyond our expectations. Over the past couple of years, we have been considering how our vision might evolve as a church, and what our priorities should be in the future.
I would like to thank all who continue to be faithful in their giving and support of the mission of God in this community and beyond. We continue to face the challenge of our finances; I am pleased to say we have made progress in this, even during a difficult year, but we need to continue the journey. Even in times such as these your giving is even more important as the church faces many increases in costs.
I continued to be moved and encouraged by the faith of the Body of Christ at our church. We have been reminded in the past couple of years just how precious it is to be able to meet together freely in person to worship the Lord Jesus. Let us hold onto that joy as we explore how we might share the Good News beyond our church walls in our local communities in the future.
Please reflect on the words of Rob Bell
“All work is holy, all moments sacred, all encounters with others encounters with the divine. For Jesus, it’s never just a job, a conversation is never just an exchange of words, a meal is never just the consumption of food, because it’s never just bread and it’s never just wine. Jesus doesn’t divide the world up into the common and the sacred; he gives us eyes to see the sacred in the common. He comes to help us see things more, more how they actually are: that they matter, that they’re connected, and that they’re headed somewhere.”
Rob Bell (12-03-2013). What We Talk About When We Talk About God Harper Collins
My prayer is that we may faithfully serve our Lord and glorify him. Yours in the service of Christ Martin

St. Mary’s Churchwarden 2022
As I write this report I am not able to confirm any final resolution of problems with the leaking roof and boiler heating problems but things are still ongoing. However I would like to express my thanks & support to the following Church members especially the offices and members of the PCC.
Organists, Readers, Interceders and catering teams.
Fund Raising Committee The Saturday Cleaning teams Flower Arranging teams. Martin and Katrina
Without you all we could not exist.
Laurence Jones
St. George’s Churchwarden 2022
We were delighted to welcome our new Curate, Revd Katrina Robinson-Brown, joining Rev’d Martin to our parish team. This is wonderful having them both to lead our worship at St. George’s. Our congregation numbers have increased since the constraints of the pandemic, and thanks to Sue Ogden for playing the organ for us at Morning Worship.
Our Parish Environment Officer Bill Kemp, with the Creation Team has produced our Honley with Brockholes Action Plan for Burial Grounds, Churchyards and Stones Wood. We have commenced work with a few volunteers and seeing a noticeable improvement. This had also enabled our friend at Brockholes Village Trust, Yasmin Cross, to discover, uncover and research the life stories of our Parish Churchyard Graves and Markers. We are still in touch with the Community Payback Team, and look forward to them returning to continue their routine grass cutting. Many thanks are due to Rosalind Watt for instigating a major tidy up over the Spring inside Church.
In line with the Practical Path to Net Zero Carbon energy initiative we are replacing some Church lighting with low energy LED equivalents to save costs , coupled with using the parish Green Energy Tariff.
Paul Coleman.
St. Mary’s Home Group in 2022
The eight members of the group (which originated from the 2014 Alpha Course) met weekly until the Autumn, and then fortnightly. We were delighted to be able to meet in person once more. We studied the Bible and prayed together and supported one another. In 2022 we did studies on the topics of 1 John and the Gospel of Luke.

Branch Report 2022, Honley Mothers’ Union
2022 has been a busy year following the usual pattern of MU events beginning with the Wave of Prayer in January. We welcomed some guest speakers such as Lindsey Fox, who spoke about her faith journey using the Lord’s Prayer as her guide and Julia Tum who spoke to us and showed us pictures of The Safe House Project in Mara.
2022 also saw the swapping round of the Christmas and Summer events. We held the Summer Lunch in July in Church when theoretically it is warmer in Church and had our Christmas Party at Jacobs Well where we chose from their Christmas Menu.
The 16 Days of Activism event in November raising the serious issues of abuse, particularly in the home, was publicised. Information posters with contact details on have been placed in the Church toilets (often the only place a person can be without their abusive partner). We continue to support local charities such as provisions for the Welcome Centre and our local hospital, providing bags of essentials for those who find themselves suddenly in hospital with nothing. Thanks to Pauline Adams and Diana Kaye who organise these. MU cards and calendars are still available at the back of church next to the serving table, organised by Jennie Waind. Prayer teddies are being used to bring comfort to anyone in need and there are plenty of lovely blankets too both at the back of Church, freely available to take and give.
The Honley Branch continues to be run by committee. If anyone would like to join us, please let us know. We are: Liz Short, Ann Brooks, Pauline Adams, Joan Coates, Janet Sykes and Andrea Green.
We would welcome new ideas and thoughts.
Liz Short, Secretary.
DEANERY REPORT 2022
Activity was again limited in 2022 with initially a ZOOM meeting for the annual meeting, and some changes to key positions in the 2 Synods. We continue to be part of the Almondbury/Kirkheaton Deanery although we await the appointment of a full time chair. Our Parish of Honley with Brockholes continues to be 1 of the 5 biggest in Almondbury/Kirkheaton with over 100 on the electoral roll enabling us to have 4 representatives on the Deanery Synod. The Venerable Bill Braviner was appointed Archdeacon of Halifax in 2022.’

Caring for Creation Team
The Caring for Creation Team was established in November 2021 and currently has seven members. Our purpose is to consider ways to implement and support the Diocesan policies on protecting and enhancing the environment, and report our suggestions to the PCC. We have established an Environmental Policy in line with the Diocesan recommendations and joined the A Rocha Ecochurch scheme. Our aims are to:
-
Work towards being Carbon Net Zero by 2030 in line with the Diocesan policy
-
Consider how the St, Mary’s and St. George’s burial grounds, churchyards and properties may be developed to support biodiversity and be managed in line with sound environmental practices.
-
Develop practices which minimise our use of resources, particularly non-recycleable ones.
-
Examine ways in which our ministry can be used to enhance awareness and understanding of environmental issues within the community, encouraging commitment and offering support.
This year we have developed a strategy document for management of the burial grounds and churchyards of St. Mary’s and St. George’s, which is now complete. We have also begun to work towards the A Rocha Ecochurch Bronze award.
Bill Kemp
The Music Group
This year we have continued to lead the singing for the all age worship services on the first Sunday of each month.
We have welcomed three new members, which means we currently have up to 4 instrumentalists and 8 singers We meet twice monthly, to sing a mixture of religious and secular songs. It would be great to have more new members (any age) so, if you sing or play an instrument, please get in touch with Hazel or Bill.
Hazel Kemp
Safeguarding
Safeguarding has high priority in our Parish, being a standing agenda item for the PCC. All members of the PCC have up to date DBS certificates and all have completed online Awareness Raising for Safeguarding. Some training is due to expire and so refresher training will be completed in 2023 for those who need to complete it. Our information is up to date and is readily available on our website and on display in both churches. Face-to-face training by the diocese has begun in 2022 for those who require it.

FINANCIAL REPORT
The full PCC accounts for 2022 are set out at the back of this Report.
As we emerge from the church closures experienced under the pandemic, our essential and underlying income from giving continues to be slow in recovering. Against the background of the wider cost of living pressures this is, perhaps, not surprising.
We did receive a boost to our income from the welcome return of the Christmas Street Market.
During the year we joined the nationwide Parish Giving Scheme and, although early take-up from the congregation has been slow, we enjoyed an increase in income from the earlier repayment of Gift Aid. We hope that in future more of our congregations will be encouraged to join the Scheme which we believe is the future of church giving.
Contracts agreed under the Diocesan Green Energy Scheme protected us from the impact of the unprecedented increases in energy prices seen during the year. The future is less certain, however, as the present contracts are due for renewal in September 2023.
