## **Introduction**
2021 like 2020 has again been a very difficult year for the Parish, with more lockdowns and problems caused by the Covid 19 Pandemic. We all know so many people who have been affected and I offer my sincere condolences to all those friends and relatives of people who have died. Services in Church have been able to start up again in 2021, as well as weekly ZOOM services which continued and Martin has valiantly enabled ZOOM services to be held every week which were very well attended.. We are all so grateful for the enormous workload he has managed throughout this time. This includes continuing to support the 2 primary schools every week. In the Church we have managed to complete the organ restoration project and hold a celebration concert in October to thank all our donors. Fund raising activities have been very limited although we were able to have music in the Church and a few outside stalls during the December street market. We are very grateful to all the parishioners who have ensured that we have been able to maintain regular contact with all our electoral roll members, and gave support in many forms where this was required.

## **Parochial Church Council (PCC)**
## **The Purpose of the PCC**
Honley with Brockholes PCC is the official, partly-elected, body which shares responsibility for the whole parish with the vicar. its principal function is to cooperate with the vicar in promoting in the parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical, It also has responsibility for the maintenance of St Mary's Church, Honley, St George's Church, Brockholes, Honley Parish Room and the Cremation Plot at Honley Burial Ground.

Members of the PCC are either ex-officio or elected by the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) in accordance with the Church Representation Rules. Some members may be co-opted. During 2021/20221 the following served as members of the PCC.

The PCC met 7 times in 2021/22.
## **Committees of the PCC**
The PCC has the following committee which met once between full meetings of the PCC:
Standing Committee is the only committee required by law. It has the power to transact the business of the PCC between meetings, subject to any direction given by the PCC. It consists of the Vicar, Churchwardens, PCC Treasurer and PCC Secretary.

## **VICARS REPORT**
## Dear friends,
2021 began in a similar vein to much of 2020, with a suspension of public services on 6th January, with our parish continuing to be fed through online services for the entirety of January, February and March. Sanitizer and face masks remained common place as did 2 meters social distancing. Covid 19 is a word that will stay etched in our memories for many years to come. It has been painful and many have felt lonely and isolated even in the most difficult of times.
There was an upsurge in cases of covid, and fatalities across the nation over those difficult winter months, we endeavored to stay in touch with those who were struggling and in need of practical and spiritual support.
Coffee & Fellowship continued throughout this period on Zoom each Wednesday morning, as a means of staying in touch with one another.
The much-heralded arrival of Spring in late March, was accompanied by a more positive outlook, as covid cases fell, and the government was by now well into implementing its road map for recovery, including the welcome arrival of a covid vaccine. Encouraged by these signs, with much joy and anticipation, church services recommenced on Easter Day at both St George’s and St Mary’s, on Sunday 4th April, along with continued zoom services for all who were happier at home. I would like to pay particular tribute to Elizabeth Jones and Bill & Hazel Kemp for leading our sung worship on Zoom.
We continued with our revised service pattern for the remainder of 2021. That was augmented later in the year by the introduction of midweek BCP Holy Communion on Wednesdays from 23[rd] June.
Our delayed AVM/APCM took place on 20th May 2021, during which we elected Laurence, Richard and Paul as our churchwardens. I would like to go on record in thanking them all for their sterling efforts and continued support during trying times.
It was a relief that we were able to host Christmas services this year, although understandably numbers in attendance were reduced from our usual figures. We continued the suspension of the serving of refreshments, which was a reluctant but necessary step, bearing in mind Covid cases. It is good that we were able to reintroduce this. I would also like to pay tribute to all who have stepped up to help in this important ministry. 2021 saw the introduction of Beer and Hymns at Moll Springs brewery we also held a Beer and Carols in December. The hope is that in 2022 we will continue these as they have been well received and attended.
At St. George’s the choir has not reformed and MP3’s will be used for most services; we hope that on occasions we may be able to get an organist to play. At Heritage Day we are pleased that 32 people attended and the organ was played am and pm. We also produced a new guide to the church for this event. School services resumed with a Harvest Festival and Christmas although no parents could attend. Armistice service on 14/11 at St. Mary’s was a well-attended service and felt a little more normal. The Christmas Market returned, and the music in church was very appreciated on a wet day, we welcomed local Honley choirs, church music group and organists. A special mention to those who braved the rain on our stalls outside. In 2021 we also established a environmental group under the leadership of Bill Kemp to guide us in this area.
We lost many dear members of our church family in 2021, who were promoted to glory. These included: Heather Cockhill, Pat Dransfield, Beth Dove, Cliff Green and Brian Shaw.
Each of these dear souls played a significant contribution to the life of our church, and we will miss them a great deal.

Occasional Offices 2021 24 Funerals, 13 Ashes only internments, 1Wedding and 2 Baptisms.
After a great deal of hard work, substantial renovations to our church organ at St Mary’s were completed in September 2021, following the securing of substantial grants from several fundraising bodies and the hard work of Jenny and Pam. The planned concert to celebrate the completion was held on Sunday 10[th] October 2021.
We are thankful to God for his provision which was far beyond our expectations. Over the past couple of years, we have been considering how our vision might evolve as a church, and what our priorities should be in the future.
I would like to thank all who continue to be faithful in their giving and support of the mission of God in this community and beyond. We have spent some legacy money on Parish share as we felt it was only right to support others who have not got such reserves.
We continue to face the challenge of our finances; I am pleased to say we have made progress in this, even during a difficult year, but we need to continue the journey.
I would like to thank the members of the PCC for their continued diligence and prayerful service. Also, Clive, Pauline and Roger who take care of our church accounts and put in many hours of work on these. Charles as he keeps us up to date as PCC secretary and Cate our Safeguarding officer.
Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to single out our Church wardens Laurence, Richard, and Paul for their support and willingness to serve. Those who lead our sung worship Jeremy, Elizabeth, Hazel and Bill.
I continued to be moved and encouraged by the faith of the Body of Christ at our church. We have been reminded in the past couple of years just how precious it is to be able to meet together freely in person to worship the Lord Jesus. Let us hold onto that joy as we explore how we might share the Good News beyond our church walls in our local communities in the future.

## **Wardens report – St Mary’s & St George’s, Honley with Brockholes 2021.**
Yet again another year of Covid19 stops and starts in the Church calendar. However, Revd Martin has worked hard with many varied services and events; both he and his team have maintained good communications with our community. We are emerging from the two year hiatus into a time of adapting and planning, and despite the setbacks there are opportunities for new church growth. Not quite as difficult as 202021, but the past year has been challenging, with mixed Zoom and Sunday services. A team of parish communicators, led by Revd Martin have maintained phone/ email/ visits at a distance with members of the parish family who have not been able to attend services. Revd Martin has been fantastic for the many and varied services and activities he has undertaken. Also a special thank you to Hazel & Elizabeth for their musical lead in the zoom services.

Thankfully, the organ refurbishment has been completed and the celebration event in October 2021 had some wonderful players and was well attended by parishioners and the local community. The utilisation for a series of ongoing events is also very welcome as it continues to engage the community. Thanks especially to Jenny Lockwood and Pam Kelly for their sterling efforts in securing the funds for the renovation, seeing the work through, and continuing to set up these ongoing events.
At St Mary’s a major effort has repaired the leaking pipework, now maintaining boiler pressure consistently for the users of the church. Further parts of the roof need maintenance as there is evidence of leakage and this is ongoing as roofers have been hard to tie-down. The Parish Room continues to suffer from damp due to lack of use and has required some re-wiring and boiler repairs. The room will need a major effort from volunteers to restore it to functionality now open access has been restored. Painting and floor sanding and sealing will be needed. The parish is leading the use of a plot of land in Marsh Gardens for village growing, which continues to attract considerable local interest.
We are now well on the way to getting back to the new normal as Sunday services have resumed at their pre-Covid times and the Zoom service has been discontinued. The congregation in St George’s has seen an increase in numbers of attendance alongside the Zoom services. Although small, this is very encouraging. Let’s look forward with hope and joy into the future as we adjust to the new normal.
The Caring for Creation Team has had regular meetings looking at ways to reduce our carbon footprint. A Practical Path to Net Zero Carbon energy checklist has been completed and the team, led by Bill Kemp are on their way towards achieving a Bronze award. They have carried out a tree survey at St George’s and St Mary’s to calculate the potential for parish carbon offsets.
We are all sorry that Richard & Cate are moving on, and I wish to thank them both for all their hard work and support over the years.
## **St George’s**
Yet again another year of Covid19 stops and starts in the Church calendar.
However Reverend Martin has worked hard with many varied services and events; both he and his team have maintained good communications with our community. We are emerging from the two year hiatus into a time of adapting and planning, and despite the set backs there are opportunities for new church growth.
Our congregation in church has seen an increase in numbers of attendance alongside the Zoom services. Although small this is very encouraging. Since Easter our parish services have returned to their preCovid timings. The Caring for Creation Team has had regular meetings looking at ways to reduce our carbon footprint. A Practical Path to Net Zero Carbon energy checklist has been completed and we are on our way towards achieving a Bronze award. We have carried out a tree survey at St George’s and St Mary’s to calculate our parish potential carbon offsets.
It was with sadness that we learned this year of the unfortunate closure of our neighbouring Methodist church in Brockholes. However they have kindly donated their pew cushions which help mitigate our heating bills.
The Spring storms caused some roof damage over the Chancel with rain ingress. Repairs have been made, both internally and externally.

The 2020 Quinquennial Survey report arrived at last after long delays by the architect, Richard Crooks.
The Community Payback Team who maintain the church yard up to present are still unable to work on tasks of keeping the grass and grounds tidy due to their Covid regulations. We await their return liaising with Stuart Coldwell.

The St Mary’s, Honley Mothers’ Union has continued to meet, one way or another over the last year with some meetings on Zoom and eventually meeting up for the Summer party at Thongsbridge Tennis Club, having Afternoon Tea. It was good to be together again.
Jenny Barnes and Jennie Waind stood down as branch leaders and it was decided to run the branch as a committee. We thanked the two ladies for their long service and presented them with gifts in the Vicarage garden where we could meet outdoors socially distanced.
Meetings in Church began again in September 2021 ending the year with a Christmas party in Church thanks to all those who made it happen. Elaine Buckingham was warmly welcomed into our group.
Hospital Bags and food collections for The Welcome Centre have continued and donations are beginning to pick up. Thanks to Pauline Adams and Diana Kaye. AIFA is also still being supported by donation.
Thursday morning Coffee is up and running again and is a well-supported and enjoyable weekly event for everyone, not just the MU.
## **Elizabeth Short (secretary)**
## **DEANERY REPORT**
Activity in 2021 was very limited due to the pandemic and the lockdowns. In 2021, there were 2 ZOOM meetings including the AGM where elections were held for the 2 Synods, Huddersfield and Almondbury/Kirkheaton.
Matthew Ambler was re-elected lay chair for Huddersfield. Further meetings were held later in the year to further the strategy for the deanery. From 1[st] November, the Venerable Peter Townley, Archdeacon of Pontefract was appointed acting Archdeacon of Halifax, until the Venerable Bill Braviner was appointed in 2022.

## **Restoration of the Organ 2021**
The work on St Mary’s Conacher Organ was finally completed by Spinks of Leeds in September 2021. The project came within budget with a small underspend available for future work such as tuning. The planned concert for the public to celebrate the completion and to thank all the wonderful people and Trusts who had supported us was held on Sunday 10[th] October 2021. The concert was a great success with over 200 people attending. The programme was opened by our talented Church Organist Jeremy Plummer and included Gordon Stewart, International Organist and Ann Wilkes, Soprano RNCM. Unfortunately Tom Osborne Co-Principal Trumpeter with the Halle Orchestra was unable to attend due to illness.
Attendees at the concert were invited to complete a short questionnaire giving their views on future ‘charged for’ concerts at St Mary’s Church. Forty six questionnaires were completed and there was also a significant amount of verbal feedback at the end of the concert. All the feedback was very positive about future concerts. The analysis of the feedback and suggestions for development of a series of concerts has been developed into proposal for taking things forward and this has been submitted to the PCC for their views. We would also welcome views from the fundraising committee when it is reconvened.
Martin was approached by the Royal School of Church Music, Leeds Area to host an Organ Recital and a Member Support Event on Wednesday 23[rd] March 2022. The organ was played by Alexander Berry, Team Leader and Director of Music at Bradford Cathedral. This was followed by lively group discussions on the importance of music within the Church and how we can support and encourage it.
Finally, the workshops we had planned with WOOFYT (Wooden One Octave Organ for Young People) and our local junior school are still on hold. We hope they will take place later in 2022.

## **Safeguarding Annual Report 2021**
Safeguarding has high priority in our Parish, being a standard agenda item for the PCC. The diocese has launched a new tool, Dashboard , to assist parishes to ensure all aspects of safeguarding are being addressed. St Mary’s and St.George’s are well on the way to completing all requirements. All members of the PCC have up to date DBS certificates and all have completed online Awareness Raising for Safeguarding. Our information has recently been updated and is readily available on our website and on display in both churches. Further training will be undertaken when face-to-face training by the diocese begins again in 2022.
## **St. Mary’s Home Group in 2021**
The eight members of the group (which originated from the 2014 Alpha Course) met weekly throughout 2021. For the most part, we met online, but as restrictions varied , we were able to meet again in person from time to time.
We studied the Bible and prayed and supported one another through the challenges of the pandemic and lockdown. In 2021 we did studies from the Pilgrim Course on the Beatitudes, the Commandment and the Creeds.

**Honley Junior, Infants and Nursery – Governor’s Report 2021**
HJIN has slowly returned to normal after two challenging years of the pandemic, although staff and students absences continue due to Covid. Governors’ meeting of November 2021 was informed that attendance stood at 96.4% which included children remote learning whilst isolating.
The school full governing body met with Headteacher and senior management via Teams during this time as did the various committees.
After a disappointing OFSTED report the leadership and governing body, working together are focused on moving the school forward. Policies, including Partnership Attendance and Unacceptable Violent and Abusive Behaviour, Safer Recruitment have been reviewed and updated; all of which work to promote a safe, learning environment. Numerous other policies were reviewed and adopted by the Governing body. Staff training likewise continues: Early Career Teacher and Restorative and safeguarding training, to name but a few.
Day Care and Out of School Club both have increased occupancy. Governing body working closely with the Headteacher in a positive and enthusiastic partnership to ensure HJIN moves forward with its golden values of Respect, Trust, Resilience, Responsibility and Kindness. Cate Ashley
## **Caring for Creation Team**
The Caring for Creation Team was established in November 2021 and currently has eight members. We have met three times (once on Zoom). Our purpose is to consider ways to implement and support the Diocesan policies on protecting and enhancing the environment, and report our suggestions to the PCC. We have established an Environmental Policy in line with the Diocesan recommendations and joined the A Rocha Ecochurch scheme, working towards obtaining a Bronze Award. Our aims are to:
- Work towards being Carbon Net Zero by 2030 in line with the Diocesan policy
- Consider how the St, Mary’s and St. George’s burial grounds, churchyards and properties may be developed to support biodiversity and be managed in line with sound environmental practices.
- Develop practices which minimise our use of resources, particularly non-recycleable ones.
- Examine ways in which our ministry can be used to enhance awareness and understanding of environmental issues within the community, encouraging commitment and offering support. Bill Kemp
## **The Music Group**
From April to September 2021, we continued to rehearse on Zoom and “lead” the singing on the first Sunday of the month (also on Zoom). From October we were very happy that we were able to return to leading the music in church again, for the Family Services at the beginning of each month.
We currently have 4 instrumentalists and 7 singers, and meet twice monthly, to sing a mixture of religious and secular songs. It would be great to have some new members to join us and suggest new repertoire so, if you sing or play an instrument, please get in touch with Hazel or Bill.

**Financial Report 2021**
The full PCC accounts are set out at the back of this report.
Although the gradual opening of our churches meant that there were positive signs of improvement in our income streams, overall, we were still behind pre-pandemic levels.
The steadfast support of our immediate congregation and the introduction of on-line giving meant that we were able to offset some of this impact. However , the net result was that we were unable to meet our Diocesan Parish Share in full.
During the year the restoration work on St. Mary’s Organ was successfully completed. As a result of the magnificent fund raising effort the project was fully funded and there are no outstanding liabilities.

## **The meeting opened at 19.30**
**Present: Revd Martin Short** (Chair), Charles Kaye (Secretary), and 19 parishioners.
1. **Prayer:** Revd Martin Short opened the meeting with a reading from Luke chapter 11 and a prayer.
2. **Apologies** : Liz Short, Jeremy Plummer, Hazel Kemp
3. **2020 Minutes** . Were approved unanimously
4. **Election of Churchwardens** : Rev Martin Short thanked the 4 Churchwardens for their hard work and support since the last meeting, and noted especially the work over many years for Joan Oldfield, who is retiring after agreeing to stay on for another year. Four posts were available and three nominations had been received. The following were therefore elected unopposed: **Paul Coleman** , **Laurence Trevor Jones** , **Richard Ashley.** It was noted that the Archdeacons’ visitation for churchwardens would be online for 7[th] July.

## **The meeting opened at 19.42**
## **Present: Revd Martin Short, Charles Kaye (Secretary), Clive Green (Treasurer) and 18 members from the electoral roll.**
- **1 Prayer:** The previous meeting, the Annual Meeting of Parishioners, had opened with prayer
- **2 Apologies** : Liz Short, Jeremy Plummer, Hazel Kemp.
- **3 Minutes** : The minutes of the meeting held on 10.11.20 were accepted as a true record of the meeting and signed by Martin.
- **4 Electoral Roll Report:** Numbers on the roll **:** Parish of Honley with Brockholes 110 , 15 from outside the Parish. This was no change from the November 2020 revision of 110.
- **5 Annual Report:** This was unanimously approved by the meeting .
**6. Financial Statement:** Clive Green referred to the annual report and noted that the full Parish Share had been met, with help from 2 large donations to the Parish during the year. Giving has held up well in the year, although virtually no fund raising during the pandemic. The organ project was fully funded, with special thanks to Jenny and Pam, the organ champions. Thanks to Roger and Pauline for their day-to-day work at both churches. The annual accounts were approved unanimously.
**7 Churchwardens’ Reports:** These were unanimously accepted by the meeting.
**8 Safeguarding Report:** Martin thanked Cate Ashley for her work as safeguarding officer. Cate reported that we were up to date with the dashboard requirements of the Diocese, including DBS checks and training ongoing. There were no instances of safeguarding to report in 2020.
**9 Safeguarding Policy:** The latest Diocese policy adopted by the PCC in 2020 and posted in both churches and on the website was approved unanimously.
**10 Deanery Synod Report:** This was unanimously accepted by the meeting.
**11 Elections/Appointments:** No applications were received for the vacant deanery place. Five places were available for the PCC, 2 from St. Mary’s, 3 from St. George’s. 1 application for St Mary’s was received from Pauline Adams (2021 to 2024) and 1 from Chris Coleman for St. George’s (2021 to 2024) and these were approved unanimously. 3 places remain vacant.
Clive Green proposed Langricks (Holmfirth) Limited T/A Michael Bell & Co as the Independent Examiners and this was approved unanimously. Cate Ashley was proposed as Safeguarding Officer, which was approved unanimously.
**12 AOB:** The next PCC meeting is on the 4[th] June by ZOOM. He expressed his sadness at all the people who died in the last year and asked us to remember them in our prayers.

## **Basis of Accounts Preparation**
The financial statements of the PCC have been prepared in accordance with the Church Accounting Regulations 2006 using the Accruals basis and conform with the ‘Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice’ (SORP 2015), and the Charities Act 2011 and related Regulations.
## **Parish Funds**
The PCC were unable to pay the full Diocesan Parish Share Request in 2021 and there was a shortfall of £8,252. This is not a legally binding debt.
## **St Marys Funds**
During the year the restoration of St Marys Church organ was completed and there are no outstanding liabilities.
## **St Georges Funds**
The PCC agreed to close the Churchyard Fund.
**Unrestricted Funds** are funds of the PCC that are not subject to any special restrictions regarding their use and are available for application to the general purposes of the PCC.
**Restricted Funds** are funds received or collected by the PCC for a particular purpose. The PCC is legally obliged to use those funds for that purpose.
**Permanent Endowment Funds** are funds given to the church with the specific instruction that only the income gained can be spent, not the capital.
## **Assets and Liabilities**
The following assets are not valued in the Balance Sheet:-
- Inventory Assets held by the Church Wardens on special trust for the PCC and which require
- a special faculty of disposal.
- The assets of the Parish Room, Honley, and the churchyard extension at Stones Wood,
- Green Cliff, Honley.
